Hi! So, I don't mean to be awkward or weird, but a few years ago I was really into aot and Ereri and your fic Under the Bed was the first fanfic Id ever read. I didn't have an account at the time and actually got one about a month ago, and I was looking through ao3 and I saw you and I was reminded of all the hours I had spent and how much I loved that fic! So I just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to this community and art form that I love, and that you are an amazing author ❤

Hi, I was wondering if you still plan on writing the yoi merman story? I’ve been so excited for this story ever since you first started talking about it. I really hope you are :). I love your writing; especially the way you write your creature stories. Your writing gives me chills sometimes it’s so good. Thank you for sharing your stories with us, we can tell you put a lot of hard work and time into your stories and we really appreciate it.

Well by now you know X’D sorry for the delay! I was planning on answering this ask with the actual first chapter of the fic. But alas. I couldn’t choose how to go with Viktor, since when I first started plotting he was going to be smol and super excitable and a general lovable nuisance. BUT THEN. I’ve got my weaknesses when it comes to mers that are big but equally excitable and generally lovable nuisances. And of course I couldn’t finish the damned chapter until I’d decided which way to go.

But I’m good to go now, worked my butt off polishing off the plot and organising chapter stuff. I’ll probably drop off a bunch of lore here on tumblr that I don’t want to clog up the fic with, and then hopefully chpt 1 will be done soon after ^_^

Hi, I was wondering how long/tall the mermen are in Dark Waters? You've described Erwin as gigantic of course and that mermen are bigger than their mates. I was just curious to find out if you have more specific measurements. Thank you! I love your story.

So at first glance it doesn’t look like Erwin is that much bigger than Levi, but this is only the lengths of them if they all laid down in a straight line. Erwin has A LOT of mass behind him, whereas Levi (while still a beast in his own right) is leaner.

Farlan would be around the same size as Levi in this, they’re pretty closely matched in this AU other than Levi would have a bit more mass.

Eren’s got no tail, so obviously he looks tiny in this chart. Most of the time, mermen aren’t lying straight out like this. They’d be coiled up and whatnot.

And poor Armin is, of course, a little smaller than Eren. God help him.

can you explain more of the roles/personalities of betas, like by themselves, roles in relationships, or in friendships, or in just situations involving alpha(s) and omega(s) ? i am new, and interested to learn more about them.

Betas are described as being the most like regular human beings, with the main differences being that they can (usually) still pick up on scents and the like, tend to have a lower position on the food chain than Alphas, and generally tend to take care of/protect Omegas.

Beta’s have the advantage of not having a heat or rut cycle, which would mean that in modern times at least they would be considered much more reliable employees than Alphas and Omegas because they wouldn’t need scheduled time off a week or so every month for heat/rut.

Bonded Betas are sometimes a thing, usually a childhood friend or particularly trusted Beta that provides care and protection for one or more Omegas. Kind of like a bodyguard. This might seem like more of an Alpha-suited job, but given that Beta’s don’t have ruts to worry about, that makes them better suited for unbiased guardian roles. They’ll more likely to become attached if they want to, not because of extreme pheromone release beyond their control.

Sometimes Betas can pick up on scents more or less the same as the other dynamics. Sometimes their senses are more dulled. Other times Betas are almost exactly like regular humans and possess no keen sense of smell at all.

So I know Alpha's mark omegas, and omegas could mark alphas (via scent/returning the bite) but what about beta's? especially if one did an alpha, beta, omega poly?

This is actually a good question, because we see so little fics focusing on the Beta dynamic.

Betas still have their own unique scents, something that is personally them and the overarching identifying smell that lets other dynamics know that they are a Beta. So I would imagine that they can still scent/scent mark things, territory, significant others, those they wish to court, etc…just because they’re not Alphas doesn’t mean they have no right to attempt to court who they want.

I know that the whole biting thing in heat/rut/claiming as mates thing is usually not painful for Omegas and Alphas in most lore you come across, as heat/rut usually has some trigger that changes painful stimuli into something pleasurable because they’re already having a hard enough time being in heat/rut. It’s part of the whole heat/rut is painful and a nasty process unless or until you’re with a partner or your mate. When a heat or rut is spent with someone, it’s generally a much nicer time.

But Betas don’t really have either of those cycles, so I’m not sure if they have the same chemical trigger that would translate the pain of a claiming/mating bite into pleasure. Or if it would really just hurt like hell? I guess it would depend on how you worked the lore.

If Betas don’t have a heat or rut cycle, maybe one of their benefits is that they can still take a claiming/mating bite without it being agonising, as long as it’s someone they’ve courted/feel strongly for??

In terms of Betas being able to mark others with their own bite of claim, I expect they’d be able to do that easily enough. As long as the circumstances were right, they could mark another Beta, Alpha, or Omega with a claiming bite. I assume it would happen while an Alpha was in rut or an Omega was in heat, to lessen the chances of pain being felt in the one being bitten. But I’m sure Betas could mark their mates/partners with bites and scent about the same as others. Maybe they’d have some differences. The shape of teeth could vary between Betas and Alphas, more animalistic in the Alpha gene than the Beta gene. And Omegas would probably leave smaller marks since they tend to be on the smaller side. But who knows? You can have variations, where the Omega is larger and the Alpha is tiny. And I’m sure enormous Betas are a thing.

In terms of an Alpha/Beta/Omega relationship, I’d assume that each person would just have two claiming marks. One from each of their mates. So the Alpha would have a Beta’s mark on one side of their throat, and an Omega’s mark on the other. Then the Beta would have an Alpha’s and Omega’s mark, and the Omega would have an Alpha’s and Beta’s mark. It doesn’t have to be the throat, it can be wherever the heck you want. But that’s the simplest way I could think to explain it in a vaguely visual way.
