I am still recovering from developing the correct questions to ask re the Big Secret Collab. But pretty please tell me more about the playwright/actor AU 💖

WELL... The working title for the playwright/actor AU is 'Breaking Character' because I like silly little rom-com titles—but it's entirely possible it'll change to a long-ass lyric. That's equally on brand for me. I did make a gif for the Tumblr post where that title has a yellow background like a Playbill, tho, so it might stick. We'll see.

Anyway, this is actually the first AU idea I had for RWRB after reading the book—but then life happened and other ideas happened and I got Distracted. 😅

The general gist is that Alex grew up on a coming-of-age sitcom (think Boy Meets World or The Wonder Years). As such, he's been having a hard time shaking that wholesome image and being taken seriously in the industry. His agent (Zahra, btw) gets him the script for an autobiographical play by this snobby British playwright, and Alex connects to this character for reasons he just can't put his finger on yet. He wants it. Bad.

But, when he auditions, Henry literally leaves the room halfway through his monologue. Super rude. Alex naturally thinks he blew it, but then his phone rings... and, y'know, Stuff and Things occur.

The first half is in Alex's POV, and then it switches over to Henry's halfway through. I anticipate that it'll have some epistolary bits in addition to pieces of Henry's play, which has big Fun Home vibes in terms of, like, the storytelling structure (there's a Young Henry, a Middle Henry, and then Present Henry—who Alex was auditioning for because theatre can do that).

B:  What was the first fandom you read fic in?  Which was the first you wrote fic for?

Oof. I think... I'm fairly sure it was Twilight? I know. Don't look at me. I was YOUNG, okay?

E: What character do you identify with most?  Is there a certain fic of yours that captures these qualities particularly well?

I identify with David Rose and Henry Fox to an alarming degree. brace for the goodbye is one of the first fics I wrote in David's POV, and I think a lot of my abandonment issues poured into it lol. As for Henry... My currently unfinished 'The Magicians'-inspired AU is gonna have a lot of my Henry feelings in it. So much projection is already happening in there.

M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with?  Did it turn into a story?

Well, @kiwiana-writes does have a wip doc called "pinocchio au for stevie??? fuck my life" or something like that because he said something about a puppet au and I said "pinocchio au i dare you." So, there's that? Honestly, I frequently spit out hella dumb au ideas that never get written. For some reason, I can't think of a single example... It's kinda like when someone asks you what your favorite movie is and you suddenly can't remember a single movie you've ever seen. Though, I recently wrote @nontoxic-writes an absolute NONSENSE AU for their birthday, based on that time Aaron Tveit pushed* them into traffic. That's pretty weird and silly. *Aaron did no such thing.

Listen, I went back and forth on this because I thought you might've been talking about the playwright/actor AU, but you also went adorably bananas when I told you what 'like a slow fire burn,' was actually about, so... I'm going to share five things about the latter:

It takes place in a small town outside of Austin, Texas. In fact, it'll be aggressively Texan—like, in a good way (not referring to the state's politics).

It will have multiple chapters. The number is still TBD.

Alex is a practicing lawyer. Henry has no idea what he's doing (and that's a pretty major facet of the story).

There's a lot of dancing. Occasionally of the line variety.

It's in Henry's POV. I might do an epilogue in Alex's, tho.

PEZ AS THE DOCTOR?! Oh my god. Tell me more.

YES! I don't know if you've watched the most recent DW specials with Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor, but... [River Song voice] Spoilers! He's Pez. I mean, he's not, but the Pez energy is off the goddamn charts.

I was sitting there watching the Christmas special and thinking, "Fuck, Pez would make an awesome Doctor." Then, "Fuck, Thirteen did a NYE thing instead of a Christmas special. I could do a NYE special." Next thing you know, I have a Google Doc and words.

It was supposed to be a short little oneshot. Yet, it's already 5.8k and we've barely met Pez. 🤦‍♀️ The story is based around a time loop that Alex, Henry, June, Nora, and Bea don't even know that they're in... until Alex and Henry deviate from their typical pattern, meet Pez, and they'll discover the cause of the time loop together. I don't wanna give too much away there, but it'll also set up for additional adventures with Pez in the future—as DW Festive Specials do.

This is my favorite snippet thus far:

While Alex's brain buffers, Henry ignores the question. "What the bloody hell was that?"  Alex's hand, still on the small of his back, moves in a small circle, and Henry's shoulders loosen marginally.  "Sonic Screwdriver," Fashionable Mystery Man replies, tucking the wand into his inside coat pocket. Alex blinks. "Angry tamale." He sees Henry turn his head, baffled, out of the corner of his eye. The other guy looks confused, too, but he still flashes Alex a white-toothed smile. "What?"  "What?" Alex folds his arms over his chest and injects as much sarcasm as he can muster into his voice. "I'm saying random fucking words like they make sense together. Is that… not what we're doing?"

I first talked about it here, and shared more of it this past Sunday.

I'm hoping to finish it this weekend, but I also said that last weekend and ended up writing almost 4k without getting even halfway done lmfao. So, we'll see. I will absolutely post it this month, though.

The fic also features the 'Get Low' moment from the book, in a way, and I have a playlist for the songs played by the D.J. in all the loops (even though you don't see most of them lol).
