On hindsight, this might not have been the best idea.
But what choice did he have really? The combination of that electronic disc and the fall into the Potomac had clearly done some sort of number on the metal arm that he hadn’t anticipated, and now it hung like a dead weight by his side, hastily stuffed into a jacket pocket to hide the glimmer of metal from the view of passers-by. There was no way he could manage without something being done, but likewise it wasn’t exactly the sort of thing he could show just anyone.
Memories were still minimal, evading his grasp before he could fully latch onto anything concrete. He wasn’t the asset anymore, that had been his decision. He’d pulled Steve that man from the river, and then...well, he’d fled. In truth, he’d thought he would have been hauled back in before long, but the training that had made him so efficient had helped him keep hidden. He’d kept his head down, travelled, never stayed too long in any one place, all while desperately trying to claw back any sort of sense of memory or self.
If it were asked, his name was James. That much had stuck.
From what he’d been able to find out, he might be able to get help with the arm here. Stark Tower. Anything was worth a shot.
