ragnarok ocs
These two are my husband and my own characters from one of our favorite MMORPG, Ragnarok Online! While we don't play the game anymore, it will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Step by step 1) Rough sketch: I always start my artworks with a very rough and messy sketch. I just try to get the pose and proportions right. The slightly changed pose and wind idea also came up at this point. 2) Sketch: Now I fix the messy sketch and make her look like an actual character. This step takes some time, since everything else builds on it. The Assassin Cross outfit is very detailed and complicated – no wonder I simplified it so much in 2013! xD 3) Line Art: The part I enjoy least... It's very tedious to draw all these lines as nicely as possible. I don't have a very steady hand, so they often turn out shaky. Just the hair alone took me a whole hour! Also I make sure to thin out the lines in spots where the light hits and to thicken it where shadows are (usually where it crosses other lines). 4) Flatcolo: Now I change the background to a middle gray, so I can see how dark or light the colors are in comparison. Then I just fill in the basic colors, each on a separate layer. Here all colors (even the “white” and “black”) include a lot of red to unify the artwork. The hair and eyes include a lot of reddish yellow and the shadows will go even more into the red section of the color wheel. 5) Cel Shading: My favourite part! I add two shadows with hard edges to every color. I add a lot of the first shadow to make everything look dramatic, while the second one is only for very dark spots. Each shadow includes more red and is quite a bit darker than the one before. Reflective materials (like eyes, hair, skin, leather and metal) also get some yellowish highlights. And in this special shading technique (that I got from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh!) you add some complete black shading to metal. It works especially nice with the rivets and makes them look quite 3D. 6) Finishing touches: Now it's time for the soft brush. I lower its opacity and paint some soft light on the basic colors, light and shadow on the first shadow and even more shadow on the darkest shadows. You shouldn't use it too much on metal though or it will lose its metallic look. Then I add a thin blue rim light on the outer edges of the character. This makes everything look even more 3D. The background should stay simple, but I add a texture, dark-to-light gray gradient and a blue light as contrast behind the character. And we're finished! (This turned more into a tutorial than planned... xD)
