Times up (Part 1)
paring: fem!reader x wooyoung
type: angst + fluff
word count: 2-3k?
Warnings: profanity, mentions of drinking (party circumstances)
Part 2
“I think we should end this.”
The words rung in your ears, as you sat there blinking at the man before you. You felt your heart tighten in your chest, a sickening feeling bubbling in your stomach as you tried to piece together where you went wrong, where you had made a mistake. You couldn’t form a coherent sentence as the disbelief began to truly set in. You and Wooyoung has been together for two years, almost inseparable, and as you racked your brain looking for the moment something changed, you just couldn’t find it. Tears stung at the back of your eyes as you couldn’t comprehend what the man before you had just said.
You were shaken from your thoughts by an uncomfortable cough as you looked up, giving your attention back to the man you had spent so long with.
“Why?” You asked quietly digging your feet into the carpet that ran along the couch you were perched upon, it came out choked. Wooyoung stood before you pacing yet never leaving your direction. He sucked on his bottom lip, hard enough to draw blood as he himself pieced together the right words to simply tell you why he was no longer in love with you.
“It’s not you it’s me-“ He started before you interrupted him with a dry, humorless chuckle.
“How original.”
He sighed, running his fingers through his lightly colored hair. It was still holding onto the purple shade you had help put in only a few weeks ago. Dying his hair was always an experience to say the least, not to say it hadn’t been one of your favorites. He’d always move or refuse to stay in one position for too long complaining the whole time about the simplest of things. He would whine and whine about everything saying you were putting too much or not enough, even though he knew you were doing it just fine. Sometimes he’d even dip his finger into the dye you’d have open on the counter and attempt to dye a strand of your hair while he was at it, just to annoy you. He was very particular about you doing it, even though he had the money to pay any stylist in the world to do it for him, he just secretly liked showing off something you had done for him and when you found out he’d brag about it to his friends you couldn’t lie and say it didn’t make your heart soar.
He was like a kid who couldn’t sit still no matter what. You both had fun nonetheless teasing and joking with one another the whole time. Especially the way he’d react when you would finish, made the whole thing worth it really. You thought back to the way he smiled one of his infamous smiles at the way it came out, playing with the light strands, admiration spread across his face, hand in hand with the beaming smile he held. How he had turned around quickly to smother you in light kisses as a thank you for doing so good and putting up with his impatience. You sunk back to reality, however, as he waved his hand in front of you.
“Y/n are you even listening to me?” He asked quietly.
You sighed as his fingers danced across your cheek, wiping a tear you didn’t know had fell. Pulling away from his touch instantly as if he was a stranger.
“I’m sorry, but I just don’t think we should do this anymore.” He muttered his voice breaking.
You sucked in a harsh breath, biting your lip to contain the sob you wanted to let out.
“When?” Was all you could mutter back, playing with your fingers.
“When what?”
“When did you fall out of love with me?”
He ignored you. “You knew I had never done a relationship before this.”
“We were together for two fucking years Wooyoung now is not the time to just back out cause you don’t do relationships.” Using your fingers to air quote the last part.
“That’s why i’m ending it now before we both get too much farther in and at least this way we can control how it ends.” He sighed. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
You let out a dry laugh. “You don’t want to hurt me.”
He winced. “It would be worse if I stayed holding you back when you could be out enjoying your life and finding someone who truly deserves you.”
“I think it’s worse we’ve been together for two years and only now do you want to bring up the I don’t date narrative.”
“I’m sorry.”
You didn’t even looked him dead in the eyes gesturing towards the door. You wanted him to go, you couldn’t handle the thoughts that you were drowning in. A mix of anger, hurt, and regret filling you. The man you had loved for so so long didn’t feel a thing for you anymore and god did it hurt, worse than anything you had ever felt before. You were so angry that he defended himself by saying he was doing it for you when if he really cared he would’ve surely found another way. He quickly got the message and gathered his discarded things and shuffled to the door, quietly closing it behind him.
As the door clicked behind him the sobs you had choked back began to overcome you. You laid down on the couch you had shared so many movie nights with him on, shuddering at the memories, as they tore through you like tremors. You felt your mascara burning your eyes as sobbed harder and harder. His cologne still lingered in your now half empty home.
You didn’t know how long you stayed like that, clutching a pillow to your chest as each sob hit you just as hard as the last. The sound of thunder keeping your whole floor from hearing you.
Next thing you knew you had awoke the next morning, realizing you had fallen asleep. You sighed as the memories from last light returned. You didn’t even know how it happened, how it got that far. He had been very preoccupied all night something you noted, how he’d shudder if you grazed his shoulder with yours, the short answers he‘d offer. You left it alone thinking he had just had a bad day, never in a million years thinking it was because he was too busy trying to figure out how to break up with you. You didn’t even have time to get up before you heard frantic knocks at your door. Not the time. You debated on ignoring it before the sharp knocks echoed again.
You rubbed the sleep from your eyes as you got up and whisked the door open in a huff. You sniffled before meeting your best friend, Hongjoong’s gaze.
“Oh Y/n.” He let out, quickly engulfing you in a hug, you couldn’t hold yourself together anymore as you lost your composure once more, the pain still engraved deep in your heart.
You were now back on the couch, not sure you’d ever leave it, tea clutched in your hands. “I just want to know where I went wrong.” You muttered as your best friend lightly played with your hair.
“You did nothing wrong, things happen, relationships end for good and bad reasons, you can’t beat yourself up over him. Hes always been a dumbass but god has he done it now, leaving behind the only person who actually could put up with his shit.” He muttered, spitefully.
You chuckled, as you always knew Hongjoong never liked him, always warning you about his “type” and until that moment you never wished you had listened.
You sighed the pain still raw as you looked around the room, gaze lingering on a crack in the wood of your mantle that still held photos of you together. You remembered how it happened, a light hearted memory that now brought you nothing but sadness.
You and Wooyoung were dancing through the living room to your favorite song, giggles echoing throughout. You remember grasping onto his shirt as he twirled you around and around. You thought back to the look in his eye as he placed your feet upon his to teach you a dance he had practiced so many times before, it was a sparkle that they held, he looked at you as if you were the only person in the world. You remember how you didn’t have quite enough time to relish in it before he took one wrong step and you both went crashing, his back falling against it as you both fell on another, laughs echoing once more. The laughs became even louder as you both realized the fall had left a chip in your mantel.
“You big goon.” You joked hoisting yourself up, bringing Woo with you.
“That is not my fault you’re the one who took the wrong step.” He giggled.
“How could I step wrong if you were taking steps for BOTH of us?” You questioned soft giggles falling from your lips.
“Yeah, yeah.”
You felt cold hands on your shoulders as you were shook back, meeting Hongjoong’s unimpressed stare.
“What were you thinking about?” He asked as his eyebrow quirked.
“No one.” You said quickly avoiding his gaze.
“I didn’t ask who.” Fuck.
“I know it’s hard but you’re gonna have to stop giving him this, this attention. You deserve better and I know it’s hard, I know it’s still fresh but you have to start.” He sighed knowing just how bad your heart was torn.
“He was my everything and I thought I was his.” You let out biting your lip again to keep the tears subsided. It killed him to see you so hurt. The way your eyes would tear up at the slight mention of him, the way you fell apart so easily. It hurt him so much to see his best friend in such a state of hurt. He brought you to his chest as you cried your heart out for the second time that day.
Two months had passed and things had gotten better. It took time but eventually you got to the point you were okay. You could handle talking about it and you learned relationships come and go. You poured yourself into your work and closed yourself off, heart still healing.
You watched in annoyance as your door flew upon and closed just as quick, Hongjoong scrambling inside a look of his mischief gleaming in his eyes.
“What do you want?” You questioned between chewing your frosted flakes, letting your spoon rest against the side of your bowl.
“Ok so before you say no, keep in mind i’m your best friend and you love me.” He said as your eyebrow raised.
“There’s this party down the block” He started swiping a chip from a bag you had on the counter. “Super rich dude.” He said in between bites. “It’s supposed to be this really big thing and I think we should go.” The smacking of his lips driving you crazy.
“I don’t like parties.” You state simply watching his face drop as if you had just dashed all his hopes and dreams.
“But-“ He started. “But nothing.” You quipped back eating another spoonful of cereal.
“Y/n please it’s been months since you did something other than sleep and work.” He argued.
“As I should.”
“What’s the worse that could happen?” He started. “You get drunk, at least you’ll be having fun.”
“And there’s free food”
“Are you calling me fat?”
“Y/N” He huffed. “Stop being so damn difficult and go to this party.”
“Ok so let’s say I go, what if he’s there?” You questioned as Hongjoong rolled his eyes. It was a thing between you to never say his name.
“So what if he’s there, you’re better without him and if he’s there it’s just an opportunity to show him what he missed out on.” He said looking pretty impressed with his reasoning. You rolled your eyes.
“And if he’s there and makes you uncomfortable we can dip and get in n out.” He offered.
“Plus it’ll be fun and you’ll have a good time trust me.”
“I’m holding you to that in n out either way.”
And trust him you did as you slid on your second heel, knowing you’d regret wearing the damn things. You asked him how he knew the “dude bro” as he described him but he brushed it off as friends of friends which you didn’t really like but ignored.
So you decided on a simple dark red dress, that hugged your body perfectly as it ended just below your knee. It had been a while since you had dressed for yourself and it gave you a sense of happiness. You were getting back to yourself. You sighed as you looked yourself in the mirror and remembered red was his favorite color. He’d muse on and on about how amazing it looked on you, the dress in question being one of his favorites. You shrugged the memory away before smoothing out the velvet material and tugging on a denim jacket.
Hongjoong whistled as you emerged from your bedroom before you swatted at him muttering for him to ‘shut it.’ You both decided to walk knowing it was only a few minutes away and the cost of ubers were too high to get one to and back, especially knowing you’d both be too drunk to drive. Broke college kids things. Your heels had no mercy though and you decided to ditch them for the time being. You made casual conversation with Hongjoong as you made him carry the painstaking shoes but he didn’t seem to mind. You knew from the smile on his face he was pretty damn proud of getting you out. The night was warm as a breeze blew, accompanied by the noises of the city around you. It was nights like these that you felt the most collected and the reservations you held seemed to disappear within the blowing wind.
You were soon at your destination as you quickly slid on the heels you dreaded. Hongjoong rushing you in, to prevent you from any last minute back outs.
“Pretty nice right?” He asked as your eyes took in the place. It actually was pretty nice having a modern theme as it was filled with people dancing, chatting, or just standing of to the side. You were thoroughly impressed a “dude bro” could put this together.
You nodded before Hongjoong propositioned drinks which you agreed to. What the hell could go wrong? He was gone within a second leaving you alone in the giant venue of sorts. It was a home after all yet having the feeling of a nightclub for the rich. You chuckled at the thought as you mingled through the crowd, smiling at familiar faces. Hongjoong soon found you shortly after and handed you a drink which he wouldn’t disclose the name of.
You looked around the room again this time your breath catching in your throat as the man of the hour was leaned against the wall chatting with a girl you seemed to recognize yet couldn’t place. You threw back the shot instantly wincing at the burn as Hongjoong followed where your eyes had previously lingered, offering an apologetic glance. You kept your cool as you smiled, letting him know you were ok.
“Do you want to leave?” Hongjoong asked. “I know I gave you a hard time about coming but I promise we can leave I won’t hold it against you.”
“I’m ok Joong, i’m gonna keep my distance, he doesn’t dictate me anymore.” You smiled as Joong’s shoulders relaxed.
“Now go have fun i’ll be fine.”
You had been chatting with various people throughout the night before finally sitting down at a bar. You kicked off your shoes still mad at yourself for wearing them. As you did so you looked up as someone plopped down beside you. He wasn’t looking at you instead digging around for something in his pocket. You did notice however that he was very attractive, he had brown hair with a split of white between it and you were curious as to why he wanted it like that, not that it was bad. He seemed to be broadly built but didn’t look too tall. He was wearing a loose white dress shirt where the ends were sprawled against the pair of black jeans he had on. Formal but not too formal, you liked it.
He offered you a smile after taking notice of your presence which you offered back.
“I’m San.”
“Y/N.”
“I haven’t seen you around here before do you know the house owner?” He questioned dimples popping out.
“Oh no I don’t know him!” You laughed. “My friend Hongjoong knows him and took me as his plus one.”
San nodded.
“Ah i’m just usually around here and would remember a pretty girl like you.” He teases making you blush.
“Heard he’s like a dude bro though very macho.” You joked as San offered another smile trying to hold back a laugh.
“What else have you heard?”
“Apparently he has like a big ego and shit, my friend kept it very bare minimum though.”
“I’m not a dude bro.”
Realization struck as you slapped your hand across your head.
“I’m so sorry.”
“You’re good, it’s pretty funny to think that’s what you heard about me and not the fact that my dick is twice the size of new york.”
You choked on your drink sputtering.
“IM KIDDING” He laughed
“Yeah i’d hope so.”
“So what’s someone like yourself doing, drinking alone?” But before you could mutter anything back he had broken into a fit of giggles again.
“I’m so bad at flirting i’m sorry.”
You felt yourself laughing with him due to his infectious laugh and the butterflies in your stomach began to subside.
“I hate you.”
“You just met me.”
“Well I hate you.”
San threw his hand over his heart faking devastation at your words.
“I’m not talking to you anymore.” And with that he turned around back to you as you sighed.
You began tapping his shoulder following everytime you said his name.
“San”
“San”
“San”
“SAN”
“Stop YELLING.” He caught you by suprise as he turned around to face you still pouting.
“Oh please forgive me I beg.”
“Only if you write me and essay in mla format and in comic sans and-“ You threw your hands over his mouth.
“Stop talking.” He huffed and you let out a gasp as his tongue licked the expanse of your fingers.
“San what the fuck.”
He threw his head back laughing at your expense. As you reached for a napkin to wipe the spit from your hand, having the urge to throw the napkin dispenser at his head.
“Okay but does the bartender stay here 24/7?” You asked nodding in the direction of the man washing a glass back to you.
“Hell no I walk around butt ass naked I could never have random people here all the time, he just comes whenever I throw parties.”
“What the fuck.”
He threw his hands up in defense.
“It’s comfortable.”
“I cannot believe you came over here with the intention of flirting and within 30 minutes you’ve told me your life story, licked my hand, and told me about your clothing preferences, you really are bad at flirting.”
“Rome was not built in a day.”
You rolled your eyes.
You didn’t have a chance to respond before a man crashed between you and San, leaning against the bar.
“What the fuck-“ You started but stopped as it was fucking Wooyoung.
“Uh can I get some shots?” He asked the bartender, not paying you any attention.
You knew he was doing it for a reaction out of you, he hated shots.
You felt sick to your stomach genuinely pissed he had to be here right now. San shared the same look, as you made eye contact even though there was someone between you two.
The bartender handed him two shots and he pushed off leaving a tip, gone just like that.
“Did you know that guy?”
“Yeah that would be my ex.”
“He’s very charming.” San coughed.
“Hes an ex for a reason.”
“Fair enough.”
“Fucking asshole.” You mumbled.
“Say the word and i’ll get his ass kicked out.” San offered.
“Oh, don’t worry about it.” You said apologetically.
You and San talked for a while after and you learned a lot about him. He loved flowers and he was ceo at a big company right down the corner from the party you were currently at. Which made sense since he could afford such a nice place. You also learned he had an older sister and an obsession with plushies which you found quite amusing, it did click though since he was an adult sized child. He was cute and did not fail to make you smile in the slightest.
“That’s so CUTE!” You exclaimed between giggles at the mans newest revelation.
He rolled his eyes at the way giggles flew from your mouth all over a stuffed animal collection.
“Hey, stop laughing at my children.” He said a pout forming on his face.
“Your children-“ And within seconds you were doubled over again.
“Remind me to never tell you anything again.” He huffed.
“That’s not very nice.” You said playfully nudging his arm.
“Since you told me one of your deep dark secrets I guess it’s only fair if i tell you one of mine.”
“Oo do tell.”
You shook your head before taking a sip of your drink.
“If you think having a plushie collection is bad take a look at this.” You said as San leaned forward in curiosity. You tugged at the collar of your dress to reveal a tattoo of a lava lamp. It was San’s turn to lose it as he lost it clinging to the bar to stable himself.
“Oh fuck off.” You yelled playfully at him before fixing your dress.
“There’s no way you have a fucking lava lamp on your body.”
“I was DRUNK.”
“And my birthday was last week, that shit is too good.”
“I hate you.” You huffed crossing your arms. Him finally stopping his fit of giggles, face redder than ever.
“I really never pinned you as the type to be so reckless.”
“Ok what did you pin me as?”
He poked his chin exaggerating his thinking process before his face lighting up like a lightbulb in his head had just turned on.
“I see you as the type to like rain better than the sun. a hopeless romantic yet too afraid to admit it, you secretly have a fear of bugs, and to top it off never have any downtime and the only reason you’re hear is because short stuff dragged you out.” He said very matter of factly.
You went to speak yet failed to form the words. “Am I that much of a stereotype?”
“Also short stuff is like an inch shorter than you by the way.” You teased, San rolling his eyes for what you were sure was the 30th time that night.
“Ok subject change give me your phone.” You quirked your eyebrow before handing him your phone and watched as he quickly put something in before handing it back to you.
You saw he had put his number in and saved the contact as ‘dude bro’.
“You’re so annoying,” You laughed in amusement.
“Am not send me a text so I can save your shit.”
“What tells you I want to talk to you.”
“The fact I licked your hand and you’re still here.”
“Touché”
You sent him a quick text hearing a ding from his phone. He began punching something in before turning his phone to you, you read lava lamp across the screen. That’s what he set your contact as.
“I’m going to eat you.”
“Isn’t that my job”
“Shut UP.” You screeched hitting his arm.
“No you, I have to go the bathroom, don’t go anywhere lava lamp.” He teased before you swatted him away.
You glanced away studying a picture on the wall. You reconigzed it because it was the same one Wooyoung had given you for your anniversary. It was of a happy couple watching the waves wash ashore, hand in hand. You sighed, this whole night tying to him.
You began to play with the straw in your drink, a thing you had been doing all night, and for a moment you were content. You liked San, he was definitely a different character than you were used to but you liked it. San was cute and you enjoyed his playful nature. It felt good to have someone else to talk to. You didn’t have much time to yourself before the stool beside you was filled once more.
“That was quick-“ You began but stopped dead in your tracks as you were face to face with no one other than Wooyoung.
You scrambled to get up but he was too fast, gently tugging you back to your seat, his touch sending chills down your spine, making you oblige. He began to speak but you shut him down.
“Save it.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Yeah so am I.” You huffed not in the mood to do this right now.
“Y/n please.” His voice cracking. You had half a mind to throw your drink in his face, find San, and get the hell out of there but against your better judgment you stayed put.
“Absolutely fucking not, leave me alone.”
“Give me five minutes and if you don’t want to hear my shit you can leave and I won’t bother you again.”
“Five minutes.” You repeated, as Wooyoung’s shoulders relaxed, a grateful look on his face.
“That was easier than I thought.”
“Four minutes and 59 seconds”
“Can we do this somewhere else?”
“I guess but you’re currently at four minutes and 57 seconds.” He was the one to scramble up this time, tugging you with him. You rolled your eyes in annoyance as you were pulled through the packed party the smell of sweat and alcohol burning your nose along with the scent of wooyoung that you hadn’t smelt in so long, making you dizzy. Within minutes you were pulled into an empty room and as Wooyoung shut the door you escaped from his grasp and plopped on bed. The drinks finally hitting your system.
Silence invaded the room like a fog as he fumbled over what he wanted to say.
“Red’s a good color on you.”
“4 minutes and 24 seconds.”
He huffed.
“I know this is stupid and I know whatever i’m about to say won’t mean or change anything but I just couldn’t let you go again without talking to you, I couldn’t leave things unsaid.” You stayed quiet prompting him to go on.
“I know I fucked up, I know. I know I left you and gave you a shitty ass excuse but my feelings never changed.” You felt anger boil in your veins as you scoffed, rubbing your temples.
“Well I beg to fucking differ, Romeo.” You sat up, leaning on your hands for support as you looked him up and down.
“It’s true I promise, I never stopped caring about you, you’re my everything, my person, and I suck at this sappy shit but I’m so sorry.”
“Shitty fucking apology I think i’m going to go-.” You started.
“Just listen please.”
“Okay.” You sighed.
“Okay” He repeated.
“My friends were getting in my head telling me that you’d breakup with me, that’d you find someone better. They kept telling me how much of a waste it was and how it only does more harm than good, how love wasnt worth it. I watched as soulmates went from lovers to enemies and I was so terrified that if we stayed together that we’d both end up more hurt than if I ended things myself.”
“For some stupid reason I thought if I broke things off sooner rather than later you’d be better off, we both would, I thought we’d end up like everyone else.”
“You’re smarter than that.” You let out, your heart aching even though you wished his words didn’t affect you.
“I know and after I realized just how much I needed you it was too late, I realized that what we had was something different and just because others didn’t last didn’t mean ours couldn’t. Just because others were breaking up didn’t mean we had to.”
“Have you ever heard the question, if your friend asked you to jump off a bridge would you?” You asked.
He looked at you skeptically before nodding.
“Doesn’t fucking sound like it because the moral is just because everyone else is doing something doesn’t mean you have to go along with it.”
“I know and I wish I had realized how stupid I was, but I thought I could keep you from getting hurt but god I was so fucking wrong.”
“The look in your eyes after you told me to leave still fucking haunts me. I should’ve stayed, I should’ve told you everything I said wasn’t true but I was so ignorant and i’m so so sorry.”
You hated that you understood where he came from. Yes it was stupid and yes it did more harm than good but he didn’t mean for things to happen the way they did. He wanted to protect you from him, life, and the horrors of the world. you yelled at yourself internally for giving him the time of day, for understanding.
“Why didn’t you talk to me about any of that?”
“I don’t know”
“I know it’s a lot to ask but can we give this a second go?” He asked fiddling with his thumbs eyes never leaving the ground.
“Times up.”
