playing harvest moon ds and I made up a story. nonbinary farmer x nami .
the story below:
Farmer has always been a well-meaning but socially awkward "guy", someone who struggles to talk to pretty much everyone, even though "he" really really wants to make friends with them (this is inspired by how the MC doesn't really have dialogue, and kind of just responds without speaking too much, at least IMO—just go with it). Ever since "his" father passed away, "he" has been feeling a creeping sense of discomfort and confusion regarding "him"self and "his" purpose in life. "He" isn't sure who "he" can bring this up to, and with "his" severe social anxiety, it's a nearly impossible task.
Then one day, "he" crosses paths with Nami, who recently moved into the Inner Inn, standing by the beach and watching the waves. Despite her aloof demeanor, something about her and the way she looks/acts/exists makes Farmer's own discontent suddenly bloom into a revelation about "himself". "He" becomes "they" and is working on embracing this new identity. Nami becomes a figure of deep affection and yearning for Farmer, but their social anxiety, and inability to maximize their profits so as to afford nice presents, are steep obstacles. And the Harvest Sprites are very uninterested in helping, to say the least. Farmer doesn't have money to gamble? NAWT their problem.
Even though Farmer fumbles their way through most attempts to talk with Nami and ends up embarrassing themselves on more than one occasion, she does find their repeated attempts...kind of sweet. She's used to being alone, an outsider, somebody that drifts from place to place with no anchor. She can see that Farmer is also an outsider, in a way, and they start to mutually connect over this feeling.
I thought it was kind of cosmic horror-esque that whenever the farmer tries to go to Mineral Town or ANYWHERE outside of Forget-Me-Not Valley, divine force intervenes to send them RIGHT back home. So in this story, Farmer feels like they can't leave no matter how much they'd like to travel and see the wider world. After all, they've got their family's farm to run! They have obligations! They have to mine in the cave, they have to fish at the sea, they have to till the soil and water the crops and feed the chickens! So what if that's not what they want? It's what they're meant to do! It's what they're supposed to do.
And to make things even more complicated, Gustafa, and ROCK of all people, are interested in Nami too! How is Farmer going to deal with TWO rivals for Nami's affection? How are they going to save up enough to afford a blue feather to propose? Will they manage to work through their deeply intense feelings towards Nami in a healthy way? The end remains to be seen....
