Lord Eddard Stark, of the Winterfell estate, became renowned for his paintings in the mid-nineteenth century. Famed for his portraits of close family, only a few remain, most having been destroyed or stolen during The Long Night when the estate was seized by enemy forces. Here are a few select examples of his remaining work, from left to right, top to bottom; ‘Family in Winter’, a depiction of himself and his wife, and their three eldest children around the hearth in the estate’s drawing-room; ‘Red Lady’, a portrait of his beloved wife, Lady Catelyn Stark (née Tully), what remains of their letters suggest that it was her hair that he loved most about her person; ‘Sansa and Kitten’, is a portrait of Eddard’s daughter, Sansa holding her pet kitten, Lady; An unnamed portrait, thought to depict one of Eddard’s three legitimate sons in adulthood, most art historians believe it to be his eldest, Robb, who was a decorated naval hero. Though this is not confirmed; Next is a portrait of the young Robb, Sansa, and almost hidden, Arya. Playing with one of the hunting dogs, the Stark’s of Winterfell were fond of their animals and there is much documentation of them and their personalities, this painting suggests that the dog is Robb’s puppy, Grey Wind, given their closeness; ‘Arry’, is a portrait of his youngest daughter, Arya, the portrait is named after the affectionate nickname given to her and a reference to her tom-boyish interests, Lady Arya would later go on to marry the estate’s blacksmith; the final portrait is of Brandon ‘Bran’ Stark, the second-youngest son. Bran founded the Winterfell University after some years of Professorship further north, presently the University is ranked 1st in the country. Little is known of Lord Eddard and Lady Catelyn’s youngest son, Rickon, he disappeared in Skagos on a failed exploration mission when the ship he was aboard sank off the coast. Some evidence and reports suggest he actually survived the incident, but simply chose to remain in Skagos and settling there. Though these are not confirmed. Click for better quality.
