Mat tugged lightly at the marriage ribbon around his neck.

Strange to think of himself as a married man.

It wasn’t exactly following Two Rivers’ custom to hide the marriage ribbon underneath a scarf but marriage was about compromise, or at least that’s how Mat understood it. Officially, Rand was dead. The soldiers and nobles who’d guessed that Mat was sleeping with Rand would have been fairly surprised to see Mat marry some random man so soon after Rand’s death so… a secret marriage.

The official marriage that was happening today was between Aviendha and the tall Aiel warrior who was definitely not Rand in disguise, and with Elayne there to join Aviendha in marriage as her first-sister.

Aviendha studied the dim glow of sunrise, only barely visible through the driving snow outside, the curtains half-pulled across the window. Soon, she would need to dress, but she could enjoy this moment of silence before the world woke again.

Elayne in the bed behind her, still fast asleep. Rand and Mat Cauthon in their own suite of rooms a few hallways distant. Aviendha had felt the moment when Rand had woken, only a few minutes ago.

The Warder bond that Elayne had woven through Rand and the three of them revealed more than her first-sister bond with Elayne did — the extent of Rand’s affection for herself and Elayne, and for Mat Cauthon, appeared as quivering cords of golden light, woven between Rand and each of them. Each thread had been shot through with different colors, but all had been thick and sturdy. Unbreakable.

 The cleansing itself was long and slow — right up until the bloody Forsaken showed up to murder Rand and Nynaeve. And they      did     get a handful of their own turning on them — that Dashiva fellow who’d volunteered to wield Callandor was one of them, and Mat killed the man himself, stabbing him after he’d tried something that had turned Mat’s medallion into ice on his chest.

 But several hours later, it was done. The little statues that Rand and Nynaeve had been using both cracked with the strain of what they’d done, and Rand and Nynaeve themselves didn’t seem far from cracking either.

 Once the taint had been removed from the male half of the One Power, their enemies fled. Because they’d failed, Mat supposed.

 And Shadar Logoth was destroyed, only a crater in the ground where it had once stood.

He could feel Rand’s attention on him and something about the intensity of it reminded him of their first night together, back in Tear, waking Rand up from his nightmare and the way that Rand had touched him like Mat was… special and astonishing. Mat had pushed away the feeling at the time, certain that it couldn’t really be meant for him.

Certain that Rand couldn’t love him, not like that, and not that much.

"Moiraine and Siuan have put some kind of plan in motion," Egwene added, with a hint of frustration. "I can feel the wheels turning all around me. But they talked it out before we even arrived in Salidar, because the messages that I hear hold no hint of it. I wish that Moiraine had told me what it was. I could help her."

"You must remember that Moiraine is Cairhienin as well as Aes Sedai," Elayne said, smoothing down her dress and frowning at it as the neckline jumped up and down, first showing her lionhead medallion and then hiding it. She wasn't wearing the medallion in the real world — unfortunately, the medallion made it impossible to use the dream ring that Siuan had sent to her — but apparently it had become part of her mental image of herself already. "She is extremely practiced in politics and in secrets."

"For all her secrets, she cares as deeply as any of us about defeating the Dark One," Rand said. Then, more quietly, he repeated, "For all her secrets."

Aviendha studied Bode Cauthon and Eldrin Cauthon.

Mat’s first-sisters. They were still young enough that their hair should be braided but… ah, Egwene al’Vere had said that matters were reversed in the Two Rivers. It was young girls who wore their hair loose, and braiding was a ritual of adulthood. All the girls here with Aviendha now had their hair loose over their shoulders, signifying that they had not yet reached that moment, though she suspected that the one girl — Adora Aybara? — was close to the correct age. Unless wetlanders coddled their children even more than Aviendha had previously suspected.

“None of you wear a belt knife,” Aviendha said. It was meant as an observation, but the children’s faces fell. They had taken it as disapproval.

Aviendha did not have much experience with children. How was she meant to… to comfort them? Would it help if she lent them knives of hers? But she did not have enough knives for such a large group.

In some ways, this was almost like reaching for saidin — something desired and feared at the same time.

Like this, Lews Therin whispered, carefully weaving together the gentle strands of pure spirit. First, only with him.

Rand felt like he was barely breathing as he carefully wrapped the strands around Mat, a web of light that only he could see. It reminded him of… of when he'd fled Tar Valon with Mat and Nynaeve in tow. The weeks they'd spent in that inn in Tear, with Rand trying to keep the Shadar Logoth dagger from further corrupting Mat, relying on Lews Therin's aid back then as well, though he hadn't realized it.

Too young for me, Lews Therin said fondly, an echo of an echo. But you are not quite me, are you?

Rand listened to the Cairhienin Lords and Ladies, and considered the problem of what to do about Asmodean. Certainly, if he had tried to kill Mat, there could be no quarter, no hesitation.

He'd done so much to attempt to ensure Mat's safety — everything short of sending him away entirely — and it had nearly broken their relationship. And Mat had almost died anyway, killed by one of the Maidens that Rand had trusted with his life.
