saruhiko and misaki unable to sleep after watching a horror movie, but neither will admit the movie scared them.

Imagine this in middle school, maybe Yata’s parents are going to be away for the night with Minoru and Megumi and Yata’s convinced them to let him stay alone at home, he can invite Saruhiko over and they’ll have a big sleepover. Yata’s mom is a little hesitant but figures that Saruhiko-kun is trustworthy so it’ll probably be fine and she agrees. Yata’s all excited, like we’re gonna eat junk food and stay up all night and it’ll be awesome. When Fushimi gets there later in the day Yata’s ordered takeout for them and is trying to find a movie to watch. He complains that his mom has parental controls on the TV so he can’t watch anything that’s not for babies and Fushimi shrugs like that’s easy enough to fix but can you handle shows that aren’t for babies. Yata’s like hey you’re younger than me you know and Fushimi laughs like but you’re a total scaredy-cat aren’t you Misaki. Yata’s like I am not I can totally handle adult scary movies you’re probably the one who would get scared. Fushimi scoffs and is like okay we’ll see, hacking into the TV controls to remove the parental locks.

They end up watching like a whole marathon of slasher films, neither one willing to give up and admit it’s too scary even though Yata is holding onto a pillow for dear life and keeps throwing the blanket over his head. Fushimi just watches the whole thing with this fixed blank look on his face but he’s clutching the armrest of the chair just a little too tightly. Finally Yata awkwardly says they should probably quit, not that he’s like scared or anything but he has a bunch of stuff he wants to do with Saruhiko tomorrow so they need to sleep. Fushimi shrugs and says fine, Yata brings out a futon and figures they’ll sleep on the couch. Fushimi pauses and is like ‘the windows…’, Yata’s like what and Fushimi just shrugs and says there are a lot of windows in Yata’s living room. Yata looks up and outside he can see the outline of dark branches stretching along the windows and suddenly he’s like you know what why don’t we just go to my room like normal.

Once they get into Yata’s room Yata settles into the futon and Fushimi takes the bed. Yata finds himself sitting there staring at the ceiling, not saying a word but he can’t sleep either. He keeps hearing things outside, like it’s probably the house settling but — what if it isn’t the house settling. He hears the shifting of blankets near him and muffles a scream, only to hear this quiet ‘…Misaki?’. Yata breathes a sigh of relief and he’s like oh it was just you wait are you still awake. Fushimi says Yata’s still awake too and Yata’s just like ‘…yeah.’ Yata pauses and then asks if Fushimi’s scared, Fushimi immediately says no and Yata’s like me neither. They sit in silence for a while and then Yata’s like ‘Are you still up?’. Fushimi says yeah and Yata’s like I can’t sleep, Fushimi says he can’t either. Yata adds that he isn’t scared though and Fushimi says he’s not either, outside there’s a loud whoosh of wind and they both freeze. Fushimi finally says ‘just the wind’ and Yata laughs sheepishly like oh yeah just the wind I knew that. Fushimi wonders if Yata’s too scared to sleep and Yata says he isn’t but if Saruhiko is that’s fine, Fushimi’s like I’m not though. They probably end up staying up half the night, jumping at every creaking noise, both still refusing to admit to being scared but if Yata wants to sleep in the bed with Fushimi that’s fine too.
