hello favourite friend who consumes media Seasonally. what are your go to films for the start of spring when everything is buttery and the world feels new 🌱🌞

Okay so I'm guessing when you said buttery you meant sort of, fresh silky petals, but what if you meant buttery as in pastries. And ALSO petals.

I would like to suggest the Czech New Wave romp DAISIES [Sedmikrásky] (1964), by director Věra Chytilová, for when the world is so fresh & new that you and your bestie just want to eat it. The girlies are also frequently doing things like bathing in milk or filling their room with plants that almost feel like some obscure spring rebirth rituals.

Daisies also has the benefit of tying in to Jody's Sixties Spring watch list, and who doesn't want that.

But if that does not suit, you could try these daisies:

Honestly Harold and Maude (1971) dir. Hal Ashby could also be interpreted as a rebirth myth, if you like. I do like! And to me fits that particular early spring vibe of being bright and sunny but you are very much still wearing a jacket and being a little windblown.

ha, multiple people asked me for kaká songs, which made me realize...i don’t have many songs i associate with him distinctly, as opposed to criska songs? 

i guess i’d have to go with “unbelievers,” by vampire weekend. that album came out in the summer of 2013 and provided the soundtrack to my transfer season trauma, and its whole theme of faith and doubt just seems pretty apt:

Hello!! It's me again with a free night coming up and a desire to watch the perfect film for it.

What would you watch when it's the solstice, when the darkness is at it's longest, when it's deep December and the night goes on forever. When you want to mark the turn of the season with how ancient and old this world is.

I'm leaning towards The Green Knight but I'm interested to hear any thoughts you might have!!!

The Green Knight is perfect for this mode!!! I did the same last year, and it always hits!!

But more faves from my little wintertime fable/morality play pile would be:

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990) dir. Tom Stoppard - cyclicalness, inevitability, death (& rebirth through storytelling), wry, surreal, emotional, the Shakespeare of it all feels "old"

and

In Bruges (2008) dir. Martin McDonagh - the very (Irish) Catholic version of this but perfectly that. Again, wry, surreal, emotional, and the most iconic track of that Carter Burwell score is genuinely called 'Medieval Waters'---old

these are some super interesting thoughts on book v film and i will put both of these on the list and take your recommendations into consideration!

One of my boldest stances, I know! To expand, I recently read another book where I'd seen the movie first, Thomas Savage's The Power of the Dog, and I was so struck by how the tone and just, idk, feel? energy?? of the writing was sooo similar to that same quality in the movie, one of the most indefinable aspects of adaptation that Jane Campion fucking nailed, and I'm sure if I'd already read the novel I would have found seeing that translated to the screen so thrilling.

And yet! In the book was also this whole other side plot that does not appear in the adaptation (naturally, time constraints are different in these mediums), and if I knew of that I would have undoubtedly been having moments of stepping outside of the experience of watching the piece of art that Campion made to be thinking about how it seemed to be skipping that bit, as opposed to just being In It (and Staggered), as my not having read the book first allowed me to be. Nothing was taken from her movie, and then when I read his novel, I just got more of it than I even expected.

But then there are other times like The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie where I do think reading the novel first would be the superior experience order, so it's not strictly cut in stone!

Have you read gentlemen and players by Joanne Harris? It’s one of my favourite indulgent reads and it references this book (which I have not read and have now immediately added to my list for this years Campus Novel September)

I have not and this sounds very engaging. Campus Novel September is perfect and beautiful, I am actually doing an Academic Winter moment myself with this and my to be announced (intrigue!) next title, incidentally another where I've already seen the movie, which is how I know it is February-set.
