Just a shout out to this pair of books that I have on my bookshelf at home and have re-read more than once.

Just your traditional high fantasy story full of gods and elves and giant spiders and orcs and betrayals and kings and armies and the never-ending fight of Light against Dark - except. Told from the point of view of the general who commands the Dark and the god he serves.

It broadened my perception of every story I read after it. That every story had two sides, and that we often are told and shown just the one we're supposed to agree with.

It resonated (and resonates) strongly with me. If you are hurt, broken, betrayed, damaged, born wrong, driven mad, cast out - where do you go for succor? When all that are supposed to love you, do not?

It had a taste, this journey, a taste of Vorax, holding open the passage. Gluttony and avarice, aye, but oh! There was the pride, the Staccian pride, that had forged its own path in making this fierce alliance.
