Halloween month continues at Is It Wednesday with today’s spotlight: Banquet by Anne Szabla!

Banquet by Anne Szabla (@aszabla) is the story of a toddler who falls into a pit and miraculously survives. He doesn’t stay out of danger for long afterwards, as he is soon found by the demon court. However, with the demon court comes... all the politics you’d expect from a high court with the added bonus of demons. There’s different houses with different standings, and a whole page that shows where they stand and what they are responsible for. And what’s a court without the King having an affair with one of the court members? The resulting flirtatious banter brings a welcome humour to this epic comic of demons, underworld politics, and lost children.

Side note: King Hadrian and his Jack Skellington-esque “what’s this?” moment when he sees the human child is absolutely fantastic. This moment comes after the regal text box introduction of his character, and the panel that establishes that yes, he is a looming demon, which only adds more comedy to his fawning over the tiny human child.

This monochromatic web comic uses a lot of negative space, especially in the prologue. It’s what makes it so intriguing to watch, so compelling to click for each new page. The focus on text, shadows, and light, works well with the religious heaven/hell themes in the story. The monochrome panels use the shades of grey to their fullest potential, guiding the eye subtly to the important parts of the page: a revealing text bubble, dangerous teeth, or a child that has just survived the impossible.

The designs of the demons are equally cool; the element I like the most is King Hadrian’s curved teeth. It doesn’t make him look any less threatening- instead the difference from the expected canines make him look more otherworldly and intimidating. Paired with the sheer monstrosity of these demons, these details necessitate taking in all the nuances of the different character designs within Banquet.
