Cool article about birding by ear. And about the Merlin app. I thought I was good at bird songs but once I got the app I learned I was missing a lot. I recommend it, but with the caution they experience here: sometimes you find birds who mimic. I’ve seen both mockingbirds and blue jays fool Merlin by imitating other birds. And once in a while some other noise gets interpreted as a bird call.
This is all to say I’m getting excited about spring migration. Grackles and cowbirds should show up any day and phoebes, thrashers and towhees not far behind and after that tree swallows! Warm weather is forecast here, so it could happen fast. I wish I could take anyone who’s interested along on a bird walk or two during migration. It’s the most excellent thing. 🐦🪽🌿
