Upgraded a friends laptop to a larger SSD. Got to keep the old SSD, so I put it in a carrier to use as an external.
As I am a picky guy, I had to run BMD Disk Speed Test. Just to know how fast the Apple SSD is in OWC’s carrier.
But which format should I use?
First I tried ExFat. That is the top result.
Then I tried HFS journaled. Which is the second result.
Seeing as I may end up using this drive to transfer files to a Linux or Windows machine at some point, and speed being a hair faster on write I am going with ExFat.
But I had to do one more test. HFS Journaled Encrypted.
Wow, that returned a speed of 140MB/s write and 350MB/s read.
Abysmal!
This is a tough call for those of us that are concerned with electronic privacy. The accepted wisdom is to just go ahead and encrypt your system drive, and any external drive that you can easily be separated from. Especially if you store financial or other private data.
There is not supposed to be any performance penalty. I’ve heard that repeated by a lot of people in Tech and IT.
If you also do demanding creative work or development work this is a bitter pill to swallow.
All that encryption achieves is to prevent the drive from being browsable by someone who has physical access to it. For example, a Mac laptop gets stolen, and the thief mounts it in target disk mode (hold down T on startup).
If it is encrypted he would need to furnish a password to unlock the drive. So we have prevented him from getting to your tax return PDFs and unsecured excel file of all your passwords.
Does nothing to prevent a hacker or malware from browsing the contents of the drive when you are logged in and connected to a network!
So do not dismiss the importance of strong passwords, and turning off most of the ‘sharing’ features of your host OS.
Encryption won’t help you, and me, I’m not doing it.
