Imagine, if you will, being human on a Cybertronian ship.
This is a ship that, for whatever reason, you feel attached to. There's something that speaks to your human history- maybe you grew up on the coast, maybe you just really loved maritime stories, but to you, the ship is a she, and she is your friend- a vessel to carry you through the stars.
She is your home, your safe harbor. Not a woman, but a lass nonetheless.
The Cybertronians aboard sort of get it- but distinctly, this ship was always simply meant to be a ship, so it's weird when you sit down to talk to the ship of your woes. It's strange.
Except- not to you. To you, she is a hall of mysteries, a home of comfort, and when you speak to her-
She speaks back.
When finally she transforms, you're standing on her shoulder, watching the world below you, seeing the awe on the faces of mechs that thought you silly.

Featuring: You and your desire to not be hazed, 2000+ words
You'd gained a bit of a reputation, it seemed.
You were the crybaby on base. An easy target-
When Starscream wasn't around.
Somebody not wise enough, fast enough, sneaky enough to get away from the day-to-day harassments from other 'cons.
Maybe you felt like you made yourself easy to target- but you couldn't help it, couldn't help being small, couldn't help that Starscream visibly cared for you, so much so that others around him could see it, even if they had their own twisted interpretation of what was going on- but maybe, maybe it was your fault, to let yourselve have become a target.
Or maybe it was the simplest explanation:
That even without something to fire at, soldiers would find something to shoot.
"Where are you hiding..."
You kept yourself silent. If they couldn't find you, they couldn't ask you for 'help'- hiding in the cargo bay was really the only safe bet for you at the moment. Times like these where Starscream was off base, and you were alone.
And that meant you were easy pickings.
"Did you see where they went?"
You hear a clang, a exclamation of pain.
"If I did I wouldn't be looking, idiot. Check over there."
"If Starscream finds out we've been messing with his toy, he's not gonna be happy."
A third voice. The word 'toy' made your spark spin for a moment, and you had to keep your fans from activating.
"Starscream can barely register his aft from his helm these days with the way Megatron's been layin into him. You hear where he was deployed?"
You stop yourself from moving- carefully sneaking away could wait. Starscream hadn't told you where he'd been sent off to- and you hadn't had any reason to really question when he'd be back, he always came back!
Carefully, you peek over a storage crate- the three mechs, all seekers, too distracted to notice you- one searching around a stack of crates, two looking at a datapad that you could faintly see coordinates through.
And you see one of the mechs smirk.
"Slag. Almost feel sorry for the mech."
"No you do not."
"No, I don't. Fragger asked for the Pits, he's got the Pit."
"Guys, I'm not finding them in here," the third mech stepped over, looking at the datapad with a grimace.
"This planet might just be the slagging Pits," the first mech muttered, before shaking her helm.
"C'mon, there's gotta be something more fun than pushing around crates. They're not in here."
"You barely looked-"
"And I said we're done. We can find another mech for target practice."
For a moment, your whirring processor forgets the worry you had for Starscream-
Something was happening between these three Seekers you'd only ever gotten to see from a distance. The third mech- she looked a lot like Starscream, but... different, her palette rich in purple. Her teal wings, though, had that same imposing spread you'd seen Starscream hold, and her posture was casual- the kind of ease one held themself with when they were sure their orders would be followed.
Even Starscream didn't stand like that much these days.
The other two mechs' wings rose as she lifted hers, a low humming in the air as she glared up at the two mechs, both larger than her- before their wings settled, and you could feel the air almost snap with their change in demeanor.
"Okay, Slipstream."
"You got it, boss."
"If you're still in here, little bird…"
Her voice had that edge of a rasp to it that Starscream carried, it was so familiar it made your joints lock up-
But you hear a snarl of disgust, rather than a continued statement. It seemed you weren't worth the effort of a more elaborate threat, at least.
Behind the three seekers, the door closed. At least, for the moment, you were safe-
But it wouldn't last long. If it hadn't been for the scheduled shift that you had to follow (by Starscream's orders, no less), you would be in the habsuite, away from the world and away from all of this-
Would that have really been any better? Trapped in a spiral as your wings would begin to ache from underuse, underpreening, your vocaliser going scratchy after days of not speaking?
And who knew when Starscream would return- who knew how long you could rely on his return, when Megatron was so determined to send him off on suicide missions? Would, hah, would Starscream's death stop the harassment? After all, if you're not his toy anymore, then what would you be? Where was your place here?
"Cadet…?"
That soft voice almost didn't penetrate your thoughts, processor working hard enough that you could feel the heat as your helm-vents worked on overdrive to cool you. The noise must have alerted the speaker, but you don't look up, don't properly hear them- after all, you had to have thoughts about what even you were worth to the Decepticons, if Starscream were gone, if you maybe didn't even see the point of being with the side that so clearly hated you so-
"Cadet?"
This time you looked up- your mind stopped in it's spiral, the change in heat so quick you could hear a dull thunk in your vents from the thermal expansion.
Echo.
Dark rich purple, matte black, indigo- high audials that framed his helm, long spikes that reached beyond his shoulders. He was tall enough that he stood over the crate you were hiding behind- tall enough to easily see you.
"Are you okay?"
He'd asked before you could process properly that he was here, and there was a coolness, a spreading of relief from your processor down through your frame, as if the whole of your chassis was shifting back into place from the gentle feeling of Echo's pressence. You feel a large servo against your faceplates- and look down to see the tears that stained his digits. When had you started crying?
"I'm fine," you state automatically, harshly, pushing his hand away- even that felt automatic, and you regret it the moment you see that big sad face of his. "I'm…"
You weren't fine. You could see that plain as day on Echo's faceplates- that sad, acquiescent smile of his.
"…wanna get out of here?" He asked, not suddenly, but still surprising- he worked here, didn't he? Hadn't he come here for something? It occured to you, then, that Echo had come looking for you, had felt for you-
Had found you because he wanted to find you. Was it really so simple as that? His big cherry red eyes reflecting what must be your own state.
His servo was held out to you, still stained with your tears. "Starscream is on a mission from Megatron, right?"
You nod, wiping at your faceplates with your fingertips and trying not to scratch your protoform with popped claws. "I heard it wasn't anyplace nice."
Echo smirked, a buzz to his field around him- good humour, a joke. "Well, Starscream should be fine, right? If he can survive Megatron, he can survive someplace that's not-so-nice."
You hesitate from your spot on the ground. Echo was… trying to make you feel better, and you didn't know if it was working yet or not- but standing would probably feel better than being in the pain-ball you were curled up in. You reach out, take his hand, and feel something bitter rise up in you.
"…and if he doesn't come back?" You mutter, looking away from those gentle faceplates, sad, wide optics.
Echo pulled you up- easily, really, like he couldn't feel the weight you felt in your frame. How did he make it seem so easy? "He'll come back. Even if Foxfire and Knock Out have to put every piece back together, he'll be back." Echo's face looms in closer, a soft smile drawn across it. "…he'll need you to vent to, if he's hurt- and, well. Brag to, when he succeeds."
When.
Like Echo himself expected Starscream to come back in one piece. Was that even respect in his EM field, rolling in soft waves against yours?
He really did pull you up so easily. Had you really only needed to hear reassurance from one mech? That Starscream might need you when he came back? Did it matter that Echo's wings were rolling slowly, as if to show you that he was comfortable around you- more than friendly, welcoming in his gestures?
"Yeah," you agree, with some hesitation. "He'll, uh, really complain if we have to get him new arms- new null-rays, even, that wouldn't be fun."
Echo hummed in agreement, opening the storage door- when had he lead you all the way from your crate? "If he gets an update to his wings, we could always make sure to play them up- though, it would be no small feat to bring back energon from a Volcano. Earth is pretty volatile, yes?"
You nod, thinking about the tectonic plates Starscream tried to teach you of. Plate tectonics- you shuddered, thinking about Earthquakes. There were reasons you preferred a sky base.
"…did you want to go somewhere?"
The question took you out of your revery of trembling mountains and molten magma, and you had to give yourself a light reset of your processor. "W- I mean, I finished my scheduled tasks- I was just gonna stay out of the way until the next one."
You hear a low chuckle- another of Echo's soft, deep sounds that seemed to resound deep in his chassis. The hum of electricity in your frame jolted, and you could feel your wings lift, settle again.
"I'm sure your habsuite is lonely, with the air commander gone. We could go back to mine, if you'd like…?"
You blink your optics up at him for a moment- before sighing. You considered it- considered the empty suite you'd otherwise be stepping into. Starscream would be back- Echo himself seemed so sure of it. And there was that buzz to his EM field, that seemed to soothe the storm in yours.
You really probably should be around a mech that likes you right now, it's something Foxfire would recommend, and Echo felt… well, good to be around. Not the same as Starscream, but, assuredly, you felt like this mech had your best interest at Spark, somehow.
Somehow…
Giving him a tired smile, you nod, and Echo seemed… surprised, by this. "I mean, you're not wrong… that might be nice. Do you still have your nest?"
You could feel that strange thrum of his EM field, and you wished you could understand what it meant- but Echo's face remained that easy, gentle- no, careful smile. Were you really so fragile that he had to be this gentle? It almost made you mad.
…almost. For now it was that simmer of tired annoyance that you pushed deeper, sitting beside the general anxiety and that scratching need to do something, no matter how much you actually did.
"It'll be comfortable," he assured you as you walked- even with his size, he seemed to take up so little space in the halls of the base. "I've… added, some stuff, you said you like soft things, right?"
…he really did seem to go out of his way for you, didn't he? "Yeah," you say, even your voice feeling heavy in your audials.
The nest looked so cosy, when you got there- fewer sharp-edged objects, more cohesion, blankets and cusions and the like. You could feel a weight pulling you into it, like all your frame wanted to do was collapse, here and now- and all you had to do was find a small corner for yourself. It wasn't hard at all.
"Good," you hear Echo say, and you look over your back at him, finding your frame settling more easily into his handiwork than you'd like to admit. "I'm going to grab us some energon- I'll be right back. Okay?"
Those big cherry optics- they didn't seem so sad, at the moment. You nod, and his smile grows.
@radioactiverats collaboration chapter for their Cadet AU! Having a heartfelt spark-to-spark when you and your old roommate exist on other sides of the war can be nearly- but not quite- impossible-
And even Starscream might want to hold a piece of that old past for all of you.
We wrote this together back and forth over the solstice. Happy holidays everyone, and Happy New Year- may 2026 bring you many stories and creations 💚🖖
It was supposed to be just a short glimpse- something to give himself the the assurance he needed that, after the latest skirmish, you were okay.
But he couldn't just leave, seeing you sitting at the top of the Decepticon's lookout. You were alright- that did bring some comfort to his spark- and then he felt a tugging at it.
There you were. After all those vorns- a quiet moment in the dark of the Terran night, the sound of the wind and sea around you quieting the world, even his rotors were silenced. Even so, he could nearly hear the lecture from Jetfire.
Being out in the darkness, alone, no less - Spotlight didn't need any mech to tell him what he already knew. But all threat of capture fell to the wayside when it came to seeing you.
You hadn't known he would be here, nor had Spotlight initially planned on announcing his presence - but there was something about your lone silhouette on the lookout tower that drew him closer.
Perhaps it was your loneliness which called to him. Perhaps it was the comfort of your presence which drew him in, his EM field responding as if to a siren's song. Perhaps it was the fact that even the sight of you was no longer able to calm Spotlight's racing spark - after so many years of desperate hoping at every flash of blue in the sky, Spotlight needed touch before he could truly believe you weren't about to disappear.
You startle when he descends quietly beside you. You'd only just been lulled into a sense of security by the waves, shaken by your near brush with disaster had Starscream not intervened at the last second - again. And yet, you were yourself caught in the revery of that flash of yellow-
And here he was again, in front of you, the rich purple metal of the watchtower in lovely contrast to his warm goldenrod plating.
Over the wash of the waves, Spotlight has to strain to hear you.
"... How did you know I was thinking about you?"
There's a moment, Spotlight simply replaying the sound of your voice.
"You're not always thinking of me?" He jokes at last, having taken a second to isolate your soundwaves- to soak in every lilt of that familiar voice.
The solemn, slightly lost expression on your faceplate eases at that, breaking into a small smile.
Spotlight's spark warms.
You shuffle over, making room for him to sit beside you. Spotlight needs no further invitation. In a clatter of blades, his thigh presses against yours, the warmth of engines from his flight seeping into your frame.
"... It's dangerous for you to be here, you know."
"Of course I know. But I had to make sure..." His servo grasps yours. "I was worried."
"Spots. I don't want you to get hurt." Still, you squeeze his servo, not letting go.
"I'll be careful," Spotlight insists stubbornly.
You think better of protesting. It would be the same argument all over again - fearing for each other's safety and ensuring it at the cost of your own. You could only accept the risks Spotlight took because you know you would do the same.
For a few moments, you both listen to the calming wash of waves hitting the base.
You'd forgotten that it was Starscream's watch, next.
And Starscream... well.
He was tired. If he could worm his way out of it, he would have simply taken you to his habsuite and shut-down right there, regardless of protest. The skirmish had been a bad one -
Nothing could have prepared the Decepticons for whatever that, that Wheeljack had built. Starscream didn't know much about the other mech, but he had a begrudging respect for the... ingenuity of his weapons designs.
Dinosaurs was a new one. He took solace in the fact that the Autobots had seem just as harried by the wild seeming mechanoids, their fanged leader making his desire for authority very loudly known.
Starscream wondered where he got the audacity - he had been easy to distract, at least. But there was a flyer amongst those creatures, destructive and just plucky enough that it had been a stiff splinter in Starscream's struts. It had given Megatron enough paranoia to post extra watches. Disgusting. Exhausting, really, and Starscream honestly doubted that weird flying mech would be out over the open ocean anytime soon- and he wouldn't envy anything flying out in winds like this.
He didn't exactly want to be up here, either.
To make matters worse, the flying one had been armed with bombs.
Starscream almost wished the bombs hadn't been aimed at his air forces so that he could appreciate them without guilt, but the horrific accuracy the flying "dinosaur" had still ensured a healthy amount of wariness.
One of those bombs had almost hit you, after all, and Starscream would never forgive himself had it made impact.
If only Megatron had consulted his own second-in-command before ordering extra aerial watches, Starscream grouses, as he battles the push of ocean wind to the lookout tower. I could have told him that no creature would risk challenging the wind when it was working against you.
He could be in berth. With you. Safe in his arms, hoping a good recharge would put the battle from your minds. You probably were headed down already - he was looking forward to joining you as soon as his watch was up.
However, Starscream quickly realized he wasn't alone on the tower.
Was that... you?
A rush of exasperation, mixed with worry. You should be resting, after that skirmish today. And who was that beside you...?
For a moment, he can't see- but the thinning in the clouds, that odd quality of light in the night that terran storms sometimes held, and he could see just clearly enough-
Yellow.
Starscream stills.
His. That yellow had flown under his command, once.
He chose not to reveal himself just yet, as soon as he heard your laughter over the rushing waves.
The yellow mech leaned closer, eager, it seemed, to prolong your good mood.
Right. He'd been your roommate. For a moment, he watches you both, leaned against each other, digits interlaced and chattering away.
It was like a series of files had been triggered into opening- and Starscream was seeing it in flickers -
This is how it should have been. How it should be.
Students, Cadets under his watch and others, his own flight academy escapades of sneaking about, finding new places and mechs to rebel with for little fun in the halls.
Being caught by the instructors, narrowly escaping, the way it could so easily lead to the kind of satisfying skirmish that scratched that little itch in the coding of so many Seekers -
How did it feel so real in that moment? Like if he turned around, he could simply see those halls, feel the way the academy floated and rocked with the sway of winds, the massive chain holding it safe to the rest of Vos.
You laughed softly at something the yellow mech said, and that too...
It was a moment of a wish before he snapped himself back to the reality of the situation:
Autobot. On base. Megatron on extra high alert for fliers foolish enough to find them in a small windstorm-
Ah, but of course a helicopter would be more likely to brave such conditions. He could almost applaud his former cadet, choosing a form that would align himself to such turbulent winds of the planet...
And perhaps match the odd forward-pitch of his old flight patterns.
A helicopter made sense, Starscream thought. That explained a lot of things. Spotlight had never been a poor student. Starscream could see his own frustration with himself, how hard he tried - but it simply seemed he was missing an integral ingredient to good flight that would never come with practice. In spite of his preference for jets, he could easily acknowledge just how well Spotlight wore his current frame. His satisfaction at seeing Spotlight finally achieving the flight he worked for... perhaps overpowered his Autobot status too easily, but Starscream couldn't bring himself to care.
In the past, he'd perhaps have found an inventive way to sneak up on you both - enjoy seeing his cadets scramble for inventive excuses, in a setting where being caught would have been comparatively harmless. Perhaps he'd let you off with a lighter punishment, too, had your excuse been creative enough.
But as it stood, it was not the gentle sway of the Academy that rocked his frame, but the harsh gusting of the foreign winds on an alien world.
Starscream sighed internally. As much as he wanted to prolong the moment - prolong your innocent joy, soak in the happiness that tempered the weariness in your frame - cutting the moment short would be the lesser of two evils. He couldn't bear to think of the choices he'd have to make if Megatron got his claws on one of his last cadets, as an enemy no less.
He didn't quiet his steps- but still, the two of you didn't turn until he was directly behind you, his EM field buzzing with quiet exhaustion.
And he could feel the chill in yours, in...
Spotlight looked up at him with such wide optics. Had he really not expected to see the Decepticon second in command at the Decepticon base?
Maybe he had hoped he would escape- Starscream had to wonder how this former cadet of his saw him now, saw the mech that had only managed to keep him from crashing to the ground long enough to plunge helm-first into a war.
If he had known... would he have been able to keep both of you safe? Both of you, beneath his wings...
He shook his helm, tightened his plates, and ignored the stammered attempts at excuses.
"...this is not a safe place for you, little mech- especially not tonight."
He turned his optics towards you, and you shut your intake, the words stilled in your throat. Starscream didn't seem angry- more... tired, than anything. And his optics weren't burning with any rage-
And you wondered if that feeling of regret in his EM field had been genuine.
With how close he was holding it to himself, you couldn't tell, now.
Had Spotlight immediately transformed and bolted off into the night, Starscream would have let him go without even a halfhearted attempt at pursuit.
He wasn't sure whether it was a lack of self-preservation or loyalty towards you that kept him there, but either way... Spotlight stayed put.
The weariness in Starscream's optics offered you a glimpse to the mech who'd once only been known as your instructor in the Academy. Thrust into the war, unfairly so, just like you and Spotlight.
You watch his optics flit to the Autobot insignia on Spotlight's wing - but still, there's no anger. If you'd questioned the regret in his EM field, the sudden flash of sadness had been genuine.
Starscream knew that even the fourth-year cadets shouldn't have been able to take on choices of this magnitude. And yet, here you both were, mismatched insignias in spite of your - and his - shared history.
The fact you bore insignias at all tore at him, if he let himself be honest to himself. Starscream was too exhausted to fight the thoughts he knew he should be suppressing.
"... Sir."
His cadets still knew how to surprise him. It was Spotlight who'd spoken, tentative.
"I'm not sure if you remember me, but..."
"I remember you," Starscream interrupts. Of course he did. As if he could forget the cadets that had been so brutally ripped away from him - especially when it was this yellow mech that had you in pieces for vorns after the Quintesson attack, the resulting schism of Cybertron.
Spotlight looked surprised, before it quickly gave way to a sunny smile.
Starscream wondered how the other mech could still look at him like that.
He knew he didn't deserve it- he knew that he couldn't possibly be the mech that Spotlight remembered.
The mech that you still followed- Spotlight had become his own mech.
You were still...
He let out another long sigh, a servo settling to his hip in a bare-minimum performance of impatience. Spotlight's smile faltered- and he seemed to take the entirely wrong idea.
"I guess- well, you would remember your worst flier..."
Worst?
No, he hardly remembered those- the ones that always seemed to sure of their place had all perished, hadn't they? Cocky bastards, they all seemed to think they would be the next Starscream themselves-
He was too tired to brush off how he internally winced at his own harsh thoughts of the dead. Why should he care?
Why would he care-
The living were more relevant.
"You're alive, aren't you?" He grumbled, brushing off his moment of discomforting revery. "You were never my worst flier."
The worst ones never tried- and he could never say that about this mech before him, before or after the war.
Here he was, after all. In the middle of a storm-
And even you can tell the real pride in Starscream's fields- you can feel it in your own spark, welling up with warmth.
Resonating, for a split klik, before Starscream's field snapped close again.
Spotlight couldn't read him, not like you could. Not a judgement, by any means, but Starscream couldn't suppress another twinge of what if. If only he'd known. If only -
But then again, Spotlight might have ended up a different mech. It was clear that the mech who stood before him now hadn't gotten this far by being coddled.
The way you squeeze Spotlight's servo doesn't go unnoticed, and neither does the way you both exchange a quiet message only with a single glance at the other.
Spotlight's smile is shaky, but it returns.
"Not your worst? High praise coming from you, sir."
Just when Starscream thought he'd be able to lock those emotions away - this mech had a way of disarming him, didn't he? Just as you did. There you both went, reminding him of a lost past and an uncertain future all at once. All the same... there was the present, wasn't there? Where you were all standing together in an unexpected renunion that was going far better than anyone could have predicted.
Starscream looks at you, thoughtful.
He'd... he'd done his utmost to shelter you. Spared you from pain, but it seemed you were too content to live in his shadow. Idolizing him instead of discovering who you could be, seeking safety that would only last you so long.
Spotlight was a good influence on you, that much was clear.
Your trining instincts could not go ignored- and here, right in front of him, could be the answer to the question hanging heavy in his processor.
He could remember- seeing the yellow mech when he was still a jet, still the typical Seeker, moving with that odd wobble but still keeping himself in the air. Feeling the wind and the waves rocking the tower, Starscream could understand how Spotlight had been able to maneuver through the skies- he'd already overcome his own tempest.
And had pitched right into a new one.
"Perhaps as high as you're likely to get, while we still stand on either side of the faction line," Starscream stated plainly. "Megatron is feeling particularly sensitive to intruders tonight- I suggest finding a more discreet rendesvouz point, if you'd like to live long enough to receive better."
It almost felt like warning them off from the Dean (the slagger that he was)- it almost felt so real-
And that look of calm, hopeful mischief in Spotlight's face was also so familiar.
"I know just the spot," Spotlight says, and gives Starscream a silly salute. "You never saw me here, sir."
You're the one who looks doubtful, ever the practical mech - too logical, sometimes, at the cost of your own happiness.
"I'm not sure this is worth the risk," You say- that moment of sweet ignorance you still carried, where you didn't feel the full weight of your actions, but still trying, it seemed, to mitigate some disaster that your mentor was already working on putting out fires for.
Putting Starscream on the line as well, when he'd inevitably have to report back and say he found nothing.
Still, a lie like this to Starscream was practically nothing. He purposely waves away your concern.
"What, you're telling me you can't handle a little wind after all that training?"
You prickle at that, and Spotlight actually laughs.
"Wait - I wasn't - Hey-!"
Familiar ground. Familiar and good.
Starscream didn't even have to look to feel the depth of Spotlight's affections for you - he could feel it, completely unhindered, emanating from Spotlight's field - as if he wasn't even trying to hide it.
And you - you needed him, too.
Starscream couldn't help but wonder how you'd transform if you had Spotlight as your side, and the words escape his vocalizer before he can stop them. It was meant to be a calculated move, but it seemed that all caution had been thrown to the wind on the lookout tower tonight.
"If you ever find yourself in need of... new alliances," Starscream says, but he doesn't get to finish before you're shaking your helm, leans in to mirror you as you draw close- so that only he can hear-
"I don't want them to break him," You say pleadingly- the Spotlight you knew- that wouldn't survive within the Decepticon ranks. The situation was painful enough as is, but if you had to watch Spotlight's glow dim day by day under the cruel Decepticon command... to have him wither in your arms would be worse than having to watch longingly from afar.
No.
Spotlight didn't belong in the Decepticons- not after what they had become. Starscream acquiesced to you, tipping his helm. At the very least, Spotlight didn't act like he'd heard Starscream.
He marvelled at the easy warmth from the reframed mech- who he'd become, who he'd grown into, was confident and bright-
He'd be crushed in an instant in their ranks- if he didn't somehow manage to escape, if he didn't find you the reason to stay, in spite of a continuous crushing to his spirit, his spark. Starscream wished he could ignore the withering exhaustion that seemed to claw into his own spark at the thought.
You could accept that you couldn't keep Spotlight in a faction he didn't belong in-
Starscream had learned that lesson the hard way. At least you hadn't.
It was with bitterness that Starscream remembered your initiation.
Was it a blessing that you didn't even know you'd been broken?
In the dark, Spotlight practically glowed - a flame which burned with the spirit of Vos.
Starscream realized that he couldn't bear to see it extinguished. Even if maintaining that distance would mean watching you retreat further into yourself as you tried to convince yourself that you couldn't have Spotlight if you wanted to keep him safe.
Spotlight had so easily warmed up to his old instructor - the Autobots, for all their naivety and idealism, must have done something right.
All the same, Starscream selfishly would not relinquish you - that was certain.
Still, it must have been lonely for Spotlight as the only seeker in the Autobot ranks. Had he...? Starscream probed a little at Spotlight's field - almost wanting to shake his helm at how easily he could penetrate through - and felt… not the chaos that surrounded your thought processes, your trining instincts almost an interruption to your typical coding sequences. No, there was that familiar vibration that Seekers carried, once more assured in their source CNA -
What tied them all together, if one believed the spiritualists of Vos.
For a moment, it was like Starscream's seeking followed along a path- his own energies reading something he couldn't understand, for a moment, thought he was hallucinating. But it was there- and as he pulled back, it was clear as any readout he'd have from any of his own internal diagnostics.
Beneath all that warmth, that brightness, that light - lay a bottomless well of endless longing, one that spoke of solitude and desperation. At the very least, it seemed that the sunny mech had managed to come out on top, his pain so soothed by your mere presence alone.
What an enviable skill to have. Starscream marveled over that, instead of wondering over whatever there that had just happened.
Spotlight only shifted his weight, waiting for you.
You look between your mentor, your best friend that you thought you had lost-
You didn't know exactly what was happening, but Starscream wasn't the only one able to get lost in the revery, the moment pulling you all along to another place, another time, another galaxy.
Somewhere in the past there may have been a budding Winglord, a budding Trine Leader, and a warm light that both of you could admire- a resonance you could share, beyond words.
Perhaps that potential was still there now.
Spotlight faltered for a moment on the railing, a good actor in hiding his discomfort. He held out a servo to you- both you and your mentor's optics drawing over the familiar blue of his new limb, the colour so obviously matched to yours.
Representative of what was lost, for sure, but also... had it been a hope?
"We can be quick, right?"
You meet his optics, and it wasn't just him who had something of you.
Your optics, no longer piercing blue, now glowed yellow.
Once upon a time, you'd been unsure what to feel about that. To be confronted with unavoidable proof of change unsettled you, especially when you tried desperately to hold onto anything of the past.
It seemed the Primus enjoyed his jokes.
Your optics, reflecting Spotlight's colour back at him, were perhaps a sign that not all change had to be bad.
You glance at Starscream, looking to him out of habit for permission.
If he forbid you to go, you know, guiltily, that you wouldn't disobey his orders.
Spotlight, luckily, knows an opportunity when it's being offered.
"Oops," Spotlight says loudly, allowing himself to tip off the railing.
Your servo clasped firmly in his, it's inevitable that you topple over the edge as well with a startled cry. The sound of transformation drifted up to the tower, Starscream staring over the edge. Starscream watches, arms crossed, until your altmodes are swallowed by ocean mist. He would be here until you returned - as exhausted as he was, he wouldn't be able to recharge easy knowing you were out there.
But you…
His thoughts reached back towards what that purple mech had said, had reminded him of-
An echo of a lifetime long past- the little pranks that seekers- Vosians in general- might pull on one another, the daring insubordination of mechs to their mentors.
That, at least, brought a comfort to his spark, and he leaned back against the wall of the tower, watching through the darkness after you.
@radioactiverats's Cadet au, immediate follow-up to this. 890 words.
Ty sooooo so much for letting me write for this au fam. Time to get VULNERABLE!!!
What it means to see Starscream's spark-
And for him to see yours.
It was pulsing- it was warm.
It was bright in your optics and it was the light of his life-
It was his life, Starscream's, the force of energy that came with it.
And you could finally feel it against yours.
The terror in your vulnerability felt like it was so easily mirrored in him- and you could feel more of that life, that bonding winding into your spark-chamber as your spark wound into his.
Could see the snippets of his fear of losing himself, giving in to baser impulses- could feel the clawing at your processor of the 'what if's of such a fantasy that already was for you.
Could feel the way your own desire, need to be seen by him was simply how you breathed by this point- and you could feel, in turn, how you looking into his spark in such a way made him want to be that mech.
And with that, you could feel the way that validated him, could see in his memory banks the ashes, the fires burning, the red and orange skies-
And you.
Within that moment you remember the day he found you in the debris, and it's as though you're there all over again. The roaring of flames, mechs calling to one another, the sight of Spotlight's arm-
And there he'd been.
So you reached for the one shape in that red that made sense-
And through his memory of that moment, you saw yourself, the one true thing that was alive in all that red chaos.
Something blue.
You.
It had always been you.
And you felt the way he held you together like a mold made in the image of his own strength- ready to free you, so alike the threads you wove into his panels to keep him from falling apart.
There was also the viciousness, and the cruelty.
You see that, too.
Not the specifics more… vague outlines, shapes, malicious intent sprinkled into what he felt his duties were. It tasted like spilled energon on your tongue- it smelled like a battlefield and a rotten refinery. It was disgusting-
Because there were times he had reveled in it. Holding you, he had the gall to feel ever so slightly ashamed. You felt his expectation for you to pull away.
His surprise when you don't.
Your spark still wound tightly through his. If you had wanted perfection, you weren't going to find it in this war.
Because you could understand the desire for power, the will in your coding so like his, to want to lead and to show your own ability. You could understand how easily it could become twisted.
And in some of that viciousness, you could see the desire to protect what he saw as his- how, in some ways, he had held back from some of the worst of his desires, bloodthirsty or otherwise.
There was love there, yes.
But it was more, too.
It was survival, and the knowledge that hope was a goal to work towards.
You feel again the expectation in him, for you to pull back. It's hard to see outside of the light you two were sharing, but you could almost feel the surprise on his faceplates, and you do feel the soft wonder of you he feels when you giggle at it.
There was so much more to him than his cruelty, and it seemed even he forgot. He was doing this for you- for all of you, and you felt it, the desire to fly high again, to uplift all of those close to him. That even if that weren't the case, maybe you knew were a bit of a fool for him. And yet, he did want to see you fly-
All that were his, his trine, his loves, the ones he's saved, the ones he's lost…
And still, this vicious streak was a part of him- and you feel that energy in you, the pride that was so often looked down upon in Seekers of Vos, your own life and light something that filled him with his own pride.
You were among the best, because he made you among the best. And if you wanted to be better-
Then he wanted to see that, too.
That you wanted the same for him- had not occured to him.
You feel the tightening of his claws on your wings at the realisation that you held that piece of him, that piece he'd thought he'd lost-
After so long, of feeling like he couldn't find it in himself to be that mech that saved you, he sees it so clearly in your spark.
It was warm again to feel his reassurance, something that felt shared on a loop between the two of you. So long as Starscream looked to you with that memory, so long as you could find it in yourself to look up to him-
Then it was work worth doing. Pain worth surviving.
Love worth holding.
You feel as the glow of his spark recedes from yours, and feel no regret- feel tears in your optics.
Your spark pulls back, gently, and at the very least, until the final moment where both were retracted into your respective chambers, you can both be sure of how closely and truly you two hold each other.
Starscream pinning your wrists over your head and telling you how pretty you look for him
A claw trailing down your wing, causing little twitches, he digs beneath a panel to find wires to pull, to lean in to kiss, and you can feel the charge run from the tip of it, sparking almost painfully in your shoulder as he scrapes a fang along a cable

Echoes of Vos
Starscream stared across the command console, watching Echo input the various updates to the inventory. Today, he had deliberately put himself in the same area for duties as the other warmech-
And for the first few hours, he had let the time go by with minimal discussion.
There was a moment in his processor where it flashed back to the moment he had walked in on the two of you- Echo's wings, massive and powerful, spread out after a meticulous preening-
And you, radiating pure desire into the shared habsuite. Pure claim. Starscream knew in other times, he would have simply taken the moment to bask in that energy, enjoy seeing what you were taking-
But it had happened again. A shut-down, a closing off of opportunity with another, even when then, you had seemed so close to understanding-
But no. You had let Echo leave without another word.
In spite of all of the gatherings Starscream had tried to take you to, here you were, finding your own powerful fliers to claim- and he couldn't say anything against your taste in mechs.
Starscream wanted to know more. He wanted to understand the mech that had managed to breach something nobody else had managed to reach since leaving Vos-
Leaving Cybertron.
He decided, rather than playing around with his words, to be direct.
"What are your... intentions, with my Cadet?" He asked, digits interlocking in front of his face as he leaned elbows onto the console.
The faint blue of the holo-screen was soft over Echo's features, his broad wings flicking once- before settling, low, optics flicking towards Starscream with a curious buzz of his EM field.
"What are your intentions, Air Commander?" He asked softly.
Starscream's wings jolted back, high on his shoulders.
His intentions?
To save your life. To keep you safe. To preserve something of Vos-
Easily washed to the wayside as excuses. But you… there were so many things in you he saw.
Determination.
Loyalty.
Trust- perhaps, naivety.
Traits he was all too known for taking advantage of, in any given situation. Starscream knew his own reputation, and knew that at least some of it was earned.
And in Echo's EM field, he felt that questioning of his truth.
Starscream knew the rumours- what other mechs had thought you were to him, what some still whispered that you might be. It was another reason he'd wanted to bring you out-
To at least give you a taste of freedom, other mechs outside of himself. He was selfish, but he forced himself to understand what you needed-
Even if he was a bit coy with the reasons to you.
So he leveled his own steady look right back into Echo's optics, letting his frame relax visibly, his wings held partway up, his servo on his hip.
"They're my cadet. My intentions are to see them fly- with their own trine someday, should they manage to pin members."
And how easily, from that, how you could, yourself...
Bring in more to his flock.
…was that it?
It made it seem so easy to believe. He had held you in sleep, felt your denta on his plates-
And felt such satisfaction in seeing you bite into and mark the mech facing him now.
He remembered a time when Foxfire had called him a 'Wannabe Winglord'. It wasn't far from the truth.
It's like an itch in the back of his processor, really-
The understanding that you were not part of his flock, but should be.
It was there in the moment when he'd seen you with Echo- that satisfaction of, 'at last, a trine for my Cadet!'
Only to see you shy away from it, like you'd been caught doing something...
Wrong.
Taboo.
How many degrees of separation between your generation and his were there, really? Starscream had known that, down the line, certain protocols and lines of code were omitted from uploads, even actively deleted, before certain Seeker generations had come online.
But the need to be trined, to have his flock, was so ingrained into Starscream that, until recently, the very idea of you not understanding that hadn't even occurred to him.
How frustrating. If he could complain to somebody about it, he would.
And he should.
His trine- and there was always the mental block, skipping over into the interruption of 'but what of Cadet's hypothetical trine?'
Because Starscream hated self reflection. Like an itch in the back of his-
Echo had made his way to the other side of the console while Starscream had fallen into thought. The large servo on his shoulder bringing him out of it, but really, it was that quiet buzzing in the air that grabbed Starscream's attention, Echo's own field a humming response.
"...it sounds like we have the same goals, then."
It was as simple as that. Starscream whirled around as Echo made his way to his next round of duties.
"So you're pursuing them, then?" He asked, his voice loud in the nearly empty room. "You won't stop, even if they're a pain in the aft to get through to?"
And Echo stops, his frame shifting as he rolled his shoulders, wings lifting slowly, lowering again, as he turned to offer a smile.
"It hasn't been a pain yet. I think you know they're worth it."
He was off before Starscream could say anything more to him.
What was there to say when you couldn't even be mad for being called out?

Lore building, backstory, old friends

Ghosts of the past dream of you, sometimes.
Spotlight never felt quite right in his frame- and in his days at the Academy before the civil war, he got no small amount of grief for it. Many other mechs would grow tired quickly of his favourite form of relaxation- gossip and sharing news, discussing the various relationships between teachers and other students, and the faculty the Academy had been exciting. Yet due to his unstable flight...
He wasn't always so kindly treated.
But.
At least there was you- Spotlight could still recall the initiation flight, before they had been shuffled off to their suites- stumbling through flight, landing but barely to be mocked by fellow cadets of all size-classes.
And you had been there, watching him carefully, he could feel those optics on him as he flew, and he wondered at first if you were going to join in on taking him out, the quiet little blue mech.
Instead, you took a small jab at the other mech, calling her out on nearly setting off her weapons while trying to transform.
After that, it was history for him. He saw in you a friend, and friend you would become- You let him talk. That was huge, even on its own. But you would also respond, with quiet quips at first, soon turning to fun, playful jabs, sassy statements on the activity of the academy. His bare minimum hope was to be put into a room with a roommate that didn’t hate him. And here you were, somebody that not only made him feel heard, but was somebody he could have fun with.
Somebody that saw more in him than his mistakes.
It was peaceful. You warmed his spark and made him feel listened to.
‘Choplight’ was what some had called him in flight- he had a habit of stalling and stuttering, his nose turning downwards without meaning as he would try to pick up speed, dangerous things he had to correct for, sometimes overcorrecting and simply shooting into the sky. Maybe if there had been time to actually train himself into a proper Jet Seeker, he could have shown everyone- but there he was, working twice, no, three times as hard and still only being seen as half as good. One instructor with wide dark wings would berate him endlessly for it- and while Spotlight harbored his little crush on Sunstorm, there was something to be said about how backhandedly validating it was, to receive even the smallest bits of praise from his original.
Starscream, as an instructor, at least could see how badly Spotlight wanted to fly. Seeing the two of you roomed together, arguably his best and worst fliers, perhaps there had been hope that you would be able to lift him up- and there had been progress. Starscream encouraged you to take Spotlight flying-
And honestly, he made you feel listened to as well. The quiet of the Quintesson retreat had given a rare moment of peace for all of you, and this yellow mech that could barely keep himself level in flight always seemed to be bringing the most interesting gossip.
It was something he did with you, even before things went to hell. It wasn’t something he needed to think nearly as much about when you were flying with him. When Spotlight flew with you, there was no doubt in his processor that you would end up being the top of the class- good in flight, suited to your wings as they were, and not only that? You worked for it. So many of the best fliers knew they were good, and didn’t care to become better- but you didn’t just want to be good, you wanted to be seen, maybe just as badly as he himself ached to be heard. It may have been partly for Starscream’s attention, but just because he was no Sunstorm didn’t mean that it didn’t clearly push you to do better-
And maybe some mechs needed that. Maybe you needed that, and maybe Spotlight needed to see that in you just as much. Sometimes, we don’t understand how to make ourselves grow without a little bit of outside help.
And he would have so liked to grow with you, discover all of the ways you could fly together, mismatched frame or no.
Until it all went to Hell, that is.
Was it a direct Iacon attack on Vos? Was it retaliation for some Vosian slight? A bomb planted? A shooting? A curly straw and a knocked over glass of energon?
All of the information Spotlight had gathered after the fact had been jumbled, and many bots that he wished he could have asked were…
Missing.
Unable to contribute to the greater picture of what happened.
So it wasn’t too off the cuff that for all this time, he had no information on if you were alive. It was a marvel in and of itself that he’d only lost an arm in the building collapse, taken in by a mech that had only been visiting Vos for a conference- a medical mech by the name of Ratchet. From there, it was a whirlwind of being patched up, getting an arm replaced-
And eventually joining the Autobots.
It felt strange, seeing nearly all of his surviving neighbors on the other side. Like seeing a dark reflection of the community he’d been regularly denied anyways. After he’d seen the cruelty of Megatron against the group that had saved him, though, his mind was made up-
He’d heard all kinds of stories about the Decepticons.
Restrictive. More loosely militaristic than the Autobots’ rigid structure. Chaotic, with no structure past the higher command. Mechs made to order and made of the melted living metal that had been fallen Autobots-
Horror stories.
Things that he’d heard about some factions of Autobots hadn’t been much better.
Spotlight knew enough about the war to know that it was being drawn out artificially- the factions on either side grown tired over kilovorns. To their credit, it wasn’t always the rivalry between Megatron and Optimus Prime that seemed to push it onwards- sometimes, there were those out there as powerful and more crafty than Megatron turning the wheel, stoking the flames and causing resounding ripple effects across the universe. Sometimes, it was somebody more gentle than Optimus-
Terrifyingly coddling. Authoritative.
Functionist.
But Spotlight had been given the chance to see the side that would, if it could, save him-
So when the Transformers from both factions found themselves on Earth, it was with an Autobot insignia standing bright on his shoulder that he took the plunge. Neutrality didn’t suit him, and at least the bots he was with were good. In the end, it was Ratchet that made his mind up- Ratchet, who had saved him, and in his own personal ‘neutrality’, had chosen the side that he believed would save the most lives. And eventually, others on the team made him feel…
Welcomed. Accepted. Especially after he’d scanned a new form for flight-
His frame had settled, his wings had cracked in relief-
Splitting as though freed from a mold, they had rested against his back in flexible blades. His canopy was larger, but pushed upwards, allowing movement of his waist, he was springier.
It was like all he’d had to do was take on a new form, and there, he’d feel like himself properly.
And it made him realise just how much he wanted to show you.
It wasn’t fun, and it wasn’t safe, and it wasn’t contentment he felt-
Because even on a planet so different from Cybertron, he thought of you.
The sky really was your colour here, and not just like when bright spheres passed by the sunless Cybertron-
Every clear sunny day he would look out and remember Academy days with you. Sometimes he would climb into that blue, his blades quieter and his frame faster than any Terran heli should be.
He’d fly. And imagine what it would feel like, to fly with you, when he was finally in a body that suited him.
Pleased to really properly debut an old friend- thought long gone. Rats and I have been talking about Spotlight for a really long time, so it's nice to finally have him here proper! Thank you again @radioactiverats for letting me play in this sandbox .))))))
Starscream x original Seeker Character (Cadet) for @radioactiverats! They've given me permission to publish this lil gift for them as a Chapter 20 to their Cadet au! Chapter 19 can be found here, please give their stuff a read!
This was supposed to only be like 1000 words. It is. 4300+. Oops.
Featuring: Starscream, Original Seeker Character Cadet, OC Seeker Echo, pining, possessiveness, jealousy, and hints of reciprocated trining feelings!
Truly, having the understanding of just what his Cadet was going through should have made him more wary of his own trining instincts- there had been the rare flares of jealousy, when he had heard about 'Girls Night'- but ah, he had had work to do, work that would keep all three of those idiots safer-
So why had Starscream felt like the idiot for missing out? It wasn't a feeling he'd liked. Had they spoken of him, had they missed his presence? There was that latent instinct trying to tell him 'They're taking them away- and who can blame those two? How long has it been since the three of us shared that bond wholly together-'
And he had to remind himself that the little blue jet's rampant trining needs could genuinely be triggering old instincts. Old instincts to reaffirm his own claims, pin Skywarp, those pretty new claws he'd noticed clinging to his chassis and scraping red finish. To mark Thundercracker, sweet Thundercracker, who had helped him corner Skywarp, all those vorns ago, whose gentle presence had become a rarer and rarer bond, and how much of that had been on himself?
The thrill of their bond had grown distant, that flight nearly a fond but faded memory, but still, he felt part of that in his core- could feel it still, whenever the three of them flew together. The need for the three of them, that bond and connection.
And when he looked to his Cadet, the one good thing he had managed to save throughout this war…
He could understand the emptiness you must be feeling, the aching need spiking through your EM field at regular intervals while you slept, or the flare-ups while handling what had otherwise been regular tasks. Or at least, he knew that clawing need must be there, must be the trigger for those spiking anxieties, those flashes of anger that you no longer seemed able to hold in wholly. Before you had started your own shift, your own change, optics picking up more of that vermillion tinge to them, it had been just about keeping his student safe.
Keeping the last piece of Vos that seemed so precious safe.
But there was that realisation that the things he found precious of Vos weren’t always the things others might call gentle. No, he remembered the cackling laugh of seekers cornering each other around spires, flying daringly towards cliffs, dancing in the heat of updrafts and spiraling in deadly stunts down wind-wells. The energy of pinning or being pinned, of feeling somebody’s servos just miss tailfins or thrusters, of finding the way back to whatever bar and leaning against it while a daring opponent or try-hard wannabe trinemate stumbled their way back in.
The rush of flight and the danger of falling but knowing, especially with a trine, that gravity was just another toy to play with.
It wasn't a gentle protectiveness he was feeling towards you, anymore.
Not after the incident with that dark, quiet Seeker- whose designation he had already lost in the buzzing of his processor over all of this.
The biting had been one thing- it wasn't uncommon to allow somebody close to preen another like that, even in fliers outside of Vos. It wasn’t even necessarily exclusive to trine-mates or Amica- though perhaps he wouldn't so readily admit how pleasant it had been, the hum of his fans low as his claws had hooked more firmly into blue hip-plates.
Maybe that's why he had started looking around again- a Seeker seeking a distraction. That former Winglord's trinemate could eat slag, but the bulky Seeker who gave him energon reports was competent, fast, a good flier- and as a single flier, he was good for filling in missing formations. Unusually chameleon about it, like he could mirror just about anyone he flew with- to a point. So why not flare his wings a little? Why not let himself look over those navy and black wings as they lifted higher, clearly enjoying his praise, his words, the accent of familiar Vosian between them another added pleasure-
So why did it feel like there was something massive behind him? Threat alerts pinged in his processor, but he had brushed it off as another anxiety spike, something new and unpleasant that made him less... rational. Another thing he could blame on the war.
And yet, that soft buzzing steadily grew as he spoke with the other Seeker, became more of a low, thrumming roar. The widening of the other Seeker's optics had him whirling, seeing you, his Cadet, wings spread wide in the hall, glaring with those new fiery eyes-
It had been so long since he'd last gotten to see it unfiltered that it was a shock when he realised what was going on.
Did you even realise what it was you were doing? It may as well have been a spoken word, shouted.
Mine.
It was a claim. Or, the sloppy attempt at an undirected one. And you were blaring it into the hall for all to hear, as though none of you had ever left those spires of Vos. There you stood, showing off those wings he had stolen for you, standing as tall as your frame would allow, your EM field loud as cannonfire with wildly misdirected intent-
It was certainly a sight to behold, in retrospect. In the moment, Starscream had snapped with surprise, frustration, his current hope for a bit of stress relief whirling away with a quiet 'nevermind' before Starscream could stop him-
But his Cadet looked almost pleased, and there was something in the way your eyes followed after the larger Seeker, something so proud of yourself, that you had secured Starscream's attention back to you, had frightened off his quarry. Your wings were held comfortable and steady, more yours than he’d ever seen them, and that had him hold back his words.
If you hadn’t been aware of what you had been doing, that was one hell of a show of power. Had he taught you that?
He felt the tugging at his intake, the smallest smile twitching away before he forced a more stern expression over his features.
"You're not sorry."
It hadn't been a question, but after all that training, all that time around him- could he deny the satisfaction, seeing that scarred face hold some of that glare for him? Like he was no longer looking at somebody broken by war, but one that would demand to stand as his equal looking him in the optics? And the way you responded flatly, admitting to your claim, even in part…
You certainly stood tall enough on your own if you felt you could challenge him.
So he let you busy yourself with his meal, returning to his reports.
Glancing an optic down the hallway where that lone Seeker had disappeared when he knew your back was turned. His processor buzzing on new ideas.
~~
Real rest was hard to come by when you were a Decepticon, but Energon flowed well after some of the latest missions (attacks, though you had plenty of justifications for those based on survival, and everyone had been in higher spirits after all, so don’t worry about it, don’t dwell on the little creatures that you were stealing the energy from-).
All these thoughts and more buzzing through your head as you laid back, fighting for the recharge you knew you needed.
Starscream had not been back to your shared habsuite that evening- and there had been a realisation, that perhaps he wouldn't be returning for a reason. There was something at least, after that shared moment in the grass, that felt sated after cleaning through his wings, gently polishing away the very few plant-stains that Starscream had made such a fuss about. Like this was a part of the experience you needed, that need to be needed fed, ever so slightly.
Something about it still hadn't been quite enough, and you knew it- but you didn't know why. Starscream should be more than enough for that empty feeling clawing in your chassis, at your very spark, right? All this time since that day, and still you couldn’t find the answer for yourself. Shouldn’t he be enough? Pits, even his trine had noticed that need in you. It should be enough, right?
Girls Night had only really partially scratched that itch in your processor, though. Like there was some deeper, roaring need that felt so awful in you, a storm that you were thrown into that kept you clawing for whatever secret thing it was you needed.
That day in the hall flashed through your processor again. It had been hard not to think about the way EM fields still pricked over your panels, shifting to vent excess heat that vacillated from frustration to a dark satisfaction.
The way that mech had turned heel after you had stared bullets right into him? Exhilarating. It was you that had done that, not Starscream's dismissal-
And something about that felt so right in your spark.
Did Starscream ever feel this, you wondered? Giving orders to others in his trine, seeing them executed with efficiency? There had to be pride in that.
Processor overwhelmed, you laid back onto your shared berth, aware of how... empty, it seemed, after having been preened by other Seekers, having shared it with Starscream so regularly, after spending all that time cleaning those handsome wings of his-
Sighing in frustration, you forcibly offline your optics, spreading yourself out on the berth and taking up more space than you usually might, hoping that might disperse SOME of this odd backup energy. After several kliks of forcing yourself to think about the most boring reports and the files you could possibly conjure up, you find yourself finally slipping into recharge.
As if sleep would offer you any real rest.
Was it normal to store datapads like this? You find yourself wondering, digging through an endless drawer in a wall below the ship’s bridge. You felt like you had spent joors looking for something that Starscream needed, something that would help him take a break, properly REST for a change-
Deep red optics swerving their way away from you as you worked and you can feel their absence. You feel heat in your chassis, too. You keep digging for a moment, before that tugging heat had you turning your gaze upwards, back to the source of Starscream’s eyes, and seeing-
Him.
That big Seeker, standing at the bridge above you, talking to Starscream. A dream didn't stop you from feeling that prickling up your spinal strut, your wings flaring as you felt that anger spread through them. Who did this Seeker think he was, talking to your commander like that, flaring his wings so prettily, so invitingly? Stars gleamed through glass above the bridge and you found yourself lifting- It was easy to fly up to the two, set servos on the larger Seeker, yank him back by the wings, the one who you hadn't even learned the name of and who was he, even, to speak so familiarly to Starscream??
From the one that had taught you to fly on old wings, the one that had drilled in the lessons you had to reteach yourself to fly on these new ones.
Something in your dream compounded that flight training, remembering Starscream’s ever watchful optics, his critiques, his notice, with this moment- flashing red optics landing on you, you could hear something in your programming, instinct woven into your frame-
You couldn't tell if it was your voice or Starscream's, but the words were clear:
'If you're going to make a claim, do it properly.'
In the dream your servos moved on their own, from large dark wings to the curve of his canopy. In the dream, the larger mech moves easily with you, wings spreading as your digits dig into panels- and that, too, feels right, like this wasn't acquiescence, but agreement, a question asked and responded to and answered. His frame leans into yours easily, comfortably, filling your palms.
Do it properly.
Your servos and digits moved slowly up his waist, feeling that difference in size as you pressed yourself against his back, your wings rolling as you plant a palm flat between his wings and pushed down, watching with satisfaction as his rolled in their own want, the need to be claimed, his frame moving to your unspoken command.
It made your fans burn against your face, pressing your canopy to his back, your intake opening in the dreaming and the waking world to vent heat out. Pushing him down came with no resistance, your arms slipping around him as you press your face between his wings, nuzzling against those shoulder-panels. Your intake moves over his neck, mapping out the unique spinal spikes fanning out on either side of the strut, a detail you hadn't known you'd noticed, added Decepticon decoration that would prevent anyone or anything foolish enough from grabbing him recklessly-
And your glossa could move around them so easily, one by one, fans whirring away at the way that soft quiet voice had stuck in your processor, and how perhaps you wanted to hear him whimper a little, moan a little as you teased him with your glossa, teeth catching on plates, leaning him against the bridge railing in front of Starscream as your digits scratch over plating for trying to take your Commander's attention from you.
Mine.
Starscream's optics, glowing like dark fire on the both of you as you pressed this other flier down, showed Starscream that you were worthy of being looked at with such desire, your denta finding a wing and biting-
And for a moment, the dream focused only on that gleam of bright silver denta, your own sunk into metal derma, that Seeker’s intake parted with that deep navy his were stained with-
Starscream’s grin a wicked darksteel crescent cut into velvet blackness around you, his optics red suns above it.
The sound you made in your audials was loud, your fans roaring as you're woken by the way your wings nearly jolted you out of the berth.
And there was that feeling, like you had been caught in one of those Terran hurricanes, that you were being drenched in cold water. Over you-
Those red, pitfire optics of Starscream staring over you, a servo raised as if to shake you awake.
For a long moment, you hold each other's gaze, your fans stuttering as you take in the whole of his face, the red light of it illuminating the dark around you, casting his faceplates in black shadow.
Slowly, you watch as he pulls his hand back from you, and you feel your fans start to normalise, flickers of your dream bringing back the heat in waves, slowing the process.
"...sir?" You manage, your voice nearly too quiet to hear over your own fans. He had managed to rest his claws on the edge of the berth, and you can see it- a look of contemplation on his faceplate, as he looked down your frame.
"...quite the dream you must have been having," he stated, his voice measured and level. "Caught yourself in combat in your sleep?"
It was an out he was offering to you. You could see that- he was allowing you to lie to him, to give yourself that moment of dignity.
Because you heard the way your frame clicked when you deliberately closed your interface panels. And you knew he had heard it too, the only other noise in the room from your whirring fans, and the soft buzzing of his own.
So you nodded.
Raising a brow-ridge, Starscream looked over your frame, watched as you tried to force yourself to calm down, the way panels kept fluttering up and around to vent excess heat.
"...I hope you won, at least," he said carefully, and you feel another burst of heat burn through your face, your chassis, yanking your optics from him as you pull your legs to your canopy.
"...I. Yeah," you offered, the flashes of the way you had pinned the larger Seeker down in front of Starscream, trying to force the images out of your processor, your servos tight around your knees. "I guess I did."
Starscream nodded stiffly, before straightening his back, wings held high and stiff, unreadable all around.
"Good," he stated, before moving to the desk. "Get some proper rest now, will you? I won't have you exhausted from dream combat when real combat is always around the corner."
You almost snapped at him- maybe another night, you would have, considering this new wave of frustration that kept finding its way beneath your plates. But after that dream, how could you ask him to return to your shared berth? Instead, the words flying out of your intake were-
"I'm rested enough, I think."
Your pedes were swinging off the edge of the berth before you realised what was happening, but you commit, standing with forced ease.
"You get yourself some rest before you fall over. I'm..." You struggled for an excuse, before you found something at least mostly true. "I need a walk to clear my head.”
Something like a muddled concern brushes against your EM field- and there was that heat of frustration, embarrassment, like all of the Seekers around you knew a big secret that you had no access to, like you were the odd one out on some stupid puerile process that everyone was being so forgiving of.
And maybe for now, that was too much. So much had changed, and this difference was too much to handle. Before Starscream could agree with you, you’ve whirled around, making your way out of the habsuite and into the halls.
~~
Echo himself had his own schedule for rest and recharge- the higher in the ranks he had climbed, the more freedom he had been afforded, and soon enough, he had been allowed a fairly sizeable habsuite for himself, something that must have been made for a mech in a higher size-class than he was.
Or for a completed trine.
It made the lack in his life… noticeable. That emptiness a reflection of his own missing pieces. He didn’t spend a lot of time in that room.
So running into you was as inevitable as running into any other member of the ship’s higher ranking, really. If it hadn’t happened by now, it would have happened eventually-
And the fates, in his processor, had deigned it all too amusing to have him running into you on the turn of a corner, trying to rid himself of the whirring thoughts in his own processor.
Pits.
His wings lifted automatically when you caught sight of him, and he could feel the spiking of your frustration, could see the way your wings trembled with something held back in your processor.
And there you felt it again, that odd, discomforting spiking of concern, the older Seeker wafting waves of something that felt so like Thundercracker’s attempts at placation.
Gritting your denta, you feel your wings lift, and lean into the feeling, raising them on your back as you glared at the other mech.
“Watch where you’re going!” You hissed it out, a harsh parody of Starscream’s tone carried on your voice. The look on the other mech’s face had you reeling back as you recognized him, it was him-
And then came the guilt, your wings falling as you remembered the dream, images flashing in your processor and fans whirring harshly as you struggled with a myriad of thoughts in your processor.
“I’m- I’m sorry,” his voice was soft, thickly accented with Vosian, and you feel another wave of guilt- this was somebody from home, and it wasn’t his fault that Starscream had taken a liking to him, with the way his finish showed soft, decorative waves of navy and indigo on black, something artistic that looked so similar to old posters from the academy days-
And you’re shaking your helm as he continued to speak, his words mostly unheard until “-I was just on my way to drop off my report to Starscream-”
Those words had you snapping harshly back into your bad mood, lack of recharge buzzing at the back of your processor. You bristled at the sight of him, all huge and massive with those wings at a low, deliberately non-threatening angle, his optics flickering to your wings, back to your face. Flick. Wings to face.
Why did he keep looking at your wings?
"What's your designation?" You felt the way heat gathered in your chassis, the way your wings flared wider, as you glared up at the taller seeker. His optics ran along the jagged lines they made on your back, and you widened them for his attention, lifted them high as your frustration rose, trying to lift his gaze back to your face.
How often did Starscream have to repeat himself?
The larger mech collected himself, his wings rolling in that undeniably interested way, and you couldn't quite grapple with the feeling in your spark, the feeling that this mech was appreciating the attention, your glare, the heat thrumming through your EM field.
You spread the wings- your wings- a little wider, and raise your hand- setting it into the collar of his chassis, taking satisfaction in his little yelp as you yanked him down to look you in the eye properly.
You were Starscream's Cadet, and there was more than a small part of you getting a little tired with how little respect that had given you.
"Designation. Please," you added, a sudden wash of more of that twisted guilt trying to overcome you again, and you shake it off- what was this, what had gotten into you, where had all this viciousness-
But wasn’t it so earned? You were a Decepticon.
And at the very least, you were the Cadet of Starscream. You may not fully understand his actions, his crimes, the ways he had hurt other people- but truly, you didn’t need to.
All you wanted to do now was to command a little bit of that respect that you saw him wield on the best of his days.
You almost don’t hear that soft voice as he finally answers, your EM field spiking and rolling over his, drawing your attention to hear him.
"...it's Echo," the other mech murmured, his voice so soft and the feeling of whirring fans on your face so gentle that your processor nearly stalled. You can feel it- the waves of his EM field washing over you, against yours, and it really was appreciation, respect asked for and returned.
Your dream flashed through your processor, and your digits tighten on his plates. Echo holds still for a moment-
Before lowering his head more into your grip, his fans whirring softly as his wings twitched again- stilled.
A question asked and answered.
You cleared your throat, feeling your wings climb high on your back- but this time, Echo's optics stay on yours, flickering around to take in the details of your faceplate, the quirk of your browplates, the point of your audials, the crack over your nose. And in that shared moment, you could see each detail of his face, his frame- the spikes you remembered from your dream, the large, sweeping audials that could probably pick up even the quietest of sounds, optics a red that you had once heard Knockout refer to as cherry-
All the while, a hum was shared between you. A warmth of… something implacably intense between you, that threatened to overwhelm your mind, the way it made your plates lift and tighten in waves over your frame.
Alone here, in this hall you could do anything- claim this Seeker-
Pit, even if you weren’t alone, would that stop you?
In your dream you had felt those eyes on you and it had felt so right.
You don't know where the thought comes from, but you feel it settle firmly in your shoulders, your wings, your frame creaking as you tighten your grip for a moment, staring hard into cherry optics- before you manage to push it off, letting Echo go with a soft shove, staggering slightly as you feel the weight of your wings before righting yourself again.
"Echo, then," you state, trying to regain your composure, processor quieting from the distance put between you. "You will deliver your reports to me, from now on. Commander Starscream has enough on his servos, and you're going to help me carry that weight. Think you're up to the task?"
The words felt odd in your intake for their formality. But there was that thought again-
You were Starscream's Cadet.
Perhaps it was time you let yourself live up to that. And, perhaps one day-
Beyond that.
Echo straightened his back, and you wonder if you can hear the sound of his whole vocal processor reset- before the taller Seeker nodded, raising a servo in a quick, informal salute.
"...I think that's a task I'm up to," he returned, his voice low and quiet as he mirrored your words. "Is there... anything else you need me for, Cadet?"
His wings continued to flutter, and you consider what this mech could offer you-
That there was something so perfectly different from Thundercracker, but similar enough that it felt like…
You could understand why Starscream would desire for somebody so calm. Somebody that you could have at your wing-
Somebody that would lower themself into the pit to meet your gaze.
“...no, Echo,” you state, hesitating for a moment- before patting a hand to his shoulder, moving past him in the hall. “That will be all.”
As you make your way further down the hall, you feel the way his EM field almost seemed to cling to you, extricating itself reluctantly from you.
Down the hall, you don’t see the way his wings roll, but a part of you still does feel it.
