@daily-writing-challenge August 2025 Day 3 "Twitterpated"
In the fading afternoon sun, Jhaelune slipped into her apartment clutching a parcel in her arms and after closing the door, dropped unceremoniously to the floor in front of her Portable Audiophone. It was the newest, most aesthetically pleasing model of the goblin device and a highly prized possession. It was the first thing she had bought for the apartment after an exceedingly well-made bed and excellent linens for it.
Jhaelune did not own many things, having lived a quite spartan lifestyle for most of her life. Even after leaving the luxurious Dawnsworn estate, she bought very few furnishings or household items and each of them had an important purpose. This did not however, extend to her collection of Blight Boar memorabilia.
This package was a shining example of her obsession and she set about opening with every ounce of restraint she could muster in spite of excitement so great it brought a little squeal from the usually stoic knight. Though Jhaelune already owned the original version of this album, the gently unwrapped package spread over her living room floor was a special anniversary edition. Sitting on her knees she wiggled her hips, still teeming with excitement as she looked over the various included items.
The album itself was said to be a higher quality recording of the original tracks as well as including live tracks from their concert in the Caverns of Time some years back. Her hands gently brushed over each item, admiring the art on the sleeve before setting the vinyl aside to look through the rest. Another small shriek of delight escaped her as she picked up a rather gaudy booklet, turning it over in her hands. The gold-dipped pages were the first ever Thalassian translation of song lyrics and she flipped reverently through them. Jhaelune spoke common well enough and enjoyed the songs how they were made but it pleased her immensely to have this treasure.
Setting the booklet aside, Jhaelune remembered her fumbling attempts at learning Gutterspeak after her obsession with the band was in full swing. Most publications, interviews and promotional materials were in the language of the undead and she had hoped learning it would make these things more accessible. However common was already becoming a scarcely used language in Jhaelune's life which made the inside-out version of it spoken by the forsaken much too difficult.
After looking through all the items in her package, Jhaelune collected all the new art and trinkets and carried them to the back room. While the bedroom had been incredibly spacious with a generous closet, Jhaelune had other ideas about how to use the space. More than half of the room had been turned into an office, separated by a heavy privacy screen that she had to pass through to reach her bed and closet. The closet held gowns and casual clothes, even a few more pairs of shoes than Jhaelune felt she truly needed but at least half of the space was dedicated to only one thing: Blight Boar.
In the place of highest honor was a worn mask of a Forsaken female face- yellowed eye holes, thin leather straps across the painted 'rotting' visage. It had been given to her at her very first show after being urged by some Sunwalker friends to visit the Darkmoon Faire when it came to town during her self-imposed exile in Thunder Bluff. After the uncharacteristically impulsive move to cut off the engagement Venesterian Dawnsworn arranged to advance her station, as well as all other ties to her fumbling foray into politics in Silvermoon, Jhaelune couldn't stand to be seen anywhere near the mess she'd left behind.
As she picked her way gingerly though the throng of waiting fans, the mix of wonder and apprehension must have been all too clear in her face. "Hey you. You. Living. Elf," one of the blightheads near the vendors whisper-yelled at Jhaelune urgently. She blinked, finally noticing him and put a finger to her chest, fully confused. "Me?" "Yeah you, you see anyone else alive here?" He shook his head and reached out, grabbing the Blood Knight's wrist to pull her in closer. "You look like you think you're lost but you're not," he assured her and pushed a mask into her hands. "You'll see. But until then, maybe this will help you blend in."
While she could see the appeal, Jhaelune didn't find the faire particularly diverting. That concert however, changed her life and Jhaelune returned the following night to see them again. This time she dressed more casually and tied her hair high. She didn't wear the mask but still the forsaken and other blightheads welcomed her. She jostled in the crowd and felt the drumming in her bones. It was a freedom she had never felt before and didn't want to let it go.
From that point on Jhaelune was a dedicated blighthead. She purchased every bit of merchandise she could get her hands on. Though she never wore the gifted mask again, she kept it as a memento, along with every ticket, set list, drumstick and poster she had collected. Each item was displayed on one side of the walk-in closet and they formed a patchwork frame around the photo of her with the band at the Caverns of Time concert and the photo Chaszmyre insisted on taking of the day Jhaelune got a Blight Boar tattoo from her.
Standing in the closet, the knight let out a happy sigh, taking in all the memorabilia. She plucked a worn book from the shelf, turning it in her hands. The book of poems vocalist Devlynn Styx recommended in an interview was fortunately originally printed in common so Jhaelune hadn't needed to find a translated copy, possibly missing some of the nuance.
Her voracious reading of interviews and other publications about the band had afforded her an encyclopedic knowledge of the members starting with their birth and death dates, to the goblin small business Jon Graves prefers for his guitars, and all the way up to the variety of styles and materials used for Cagehead's cages throughout the years.
Setting down the book of poems, she headed back into the main room to slowly open a bottle of red wine and pour a glass. After a quick quality-assurance sip she left the wine to breathe while she finally opened the sleeve of the vinyl and set the record into her audiophone. She settled into her comfy chair, enjoying the familiar sounds, her foot jiggling with lingering excitement for the live songs she had only heard in person.
Musical Accompaniment (More important to this post)
Was anyone going to tell me Blight Boar sing a version of Lament of the Highborne or did I have to find out cause my gf was drawing Rock Sylvanas & I said "Blight Boar ft. The Dark Lady" and looked it up on youtube and actually listened to it instead of trying to kill the death metal knight..
Guide Entry: Blight Boar (Musical Group)
While many of the Elite Tauren Chieftans (ETC) and their powerful songs, the Forsaken-based musical act known as Blight Boar has become another hit favorite with those who attend the Darkmoon Faire.
The band’s four member ensemble is made up of: - Devyln Styx (Vocals) - Jon Graves (Lead Guitar) - Cage Head (Bassist) - Fiddlesticks (Drummer)
Referred to as ‘death metal’ by the band members and its manager, Jay Maguire, the band performs regularly in the aptly named ‘Cauldron of Rock’ to the east of the main fairgrounds. Die-hard fans who attend the performances are quite the enthusiastic (and possibly slightly rabid) bunch, referring to themselves as ‘blightheads.’
The band’s songs on the whole are simple. They generally follow the familiar theme of boy meets girl, the two fall in love, inexplicably die and are later resurrected by some malign villain for reasons never adequately explained.
When asked about the band and it’s performances, manager & producer Jay Maguire stated:
“This is the illest, realest, deadest band you’ll ever see! They will melt your face off, figuratively and literally! Uh, speaking of, don’t forget to sign that waiver there...But yeah, before I met these guys, I was alive and had all my skin! Now I’m dead AND filthy rich!”
Editor’s Note: The said waiver forms were in fact liability waivers that absolved the band, Maguire and the Faire from any and all injuries, maladies, and/or unfortunate means of demise that might occur at a Blight Boar concert.
On the subject of the band’s earnings from their shows, Maguire noted that the band’s fabulous wealth had pushed the boundaries of goblin economic theory. Furthermore, in recognition of his work in the fields of economics and engineering, the band’s goblin accountant has recently been appointed as an archmage and lecturer for the Kirin Tor due to his arcano-engineered marvel, The Arithmo-tron (a rather ingenious device which allows the band’s finances to be accurately managed by using temporal magics to keep a team of goblin bean counters in a suspended point in time.)
Currently, the only place on Azeroth that will host the band happens to be the Darkmoon Faire’s grounds, which opens a veritable can of worms in regards to their extravagant wealth...
me: listens to Blight Boar once
