A lovely weekend at Dorset’s Ancient Technology Centre for a fantastic Heritage Textiles course hosted by Castle Hill Heritage! We looked at textiles and their production methods from the Palaeolithic to the Industrial Revolution!
This piece was made for the Queer Culture Club's winter quarterly, the theme of which was "Gravegoods."
Additional commentary within the quarterly, written by Red Angus, says "There are a surprising number of ancient preserved bodies, especially including the mummies of ancient Egypt. These bodies give enormous information about their times and cultures, and the objects, clothing, and other artifacts cast a light back into a pre-dawn darkness. Here are some starting points for further research:
iceman.it for info on Otzi, a person older than the pyramids, whose tattoos follow acupuncture lines still used today! Found in the Alps between Austria & Italy.
penn.museum has a good article on Inca child-sacrifice mummies, who like Otzi were preserved by their altitude.
museumsilkeborg.dk has lots of good info on Tollund Man, an iron age sacrifice found preserved in a peat bog.
The artist also recommends 'The Prehistory of Sex,' a book by Timothy Taylor."
sorry i’m late, i was trying to do my hair in a historically accurate bog body style
"His mangroves held me 'til i died,
my body's relic left behind,
to fossilize beneath the willow trees."
(alt vers. with just the song title and my little yap blurb)
the prettiest skull ive ever seen is the one that belongs to a neolithic archaeological subject known as "Raspberry Girl" because thats what they found in her preserved stomach contents. she's a bog body from near Luttra in Sweden. there have been several forensic reconstructions of her and theyre alright but i think they lack a certain romanticism that the skull itself suggests. which is good, archaelogical reconstructions shouldnt be romantic. i just like the skull itself. i wish i had a resin replica of it to use for drawing reference. i imagine she looked sort of like gillian anderson.
when i went to look this up and find this picture i found out im apparently not the first person to think this particular skull is pretty.
Gejvall described her facial features as elegant and proportionally balanced, noting the consistency between her slender frame and the refined contours of her skull and jaw.
