I have another Poison Ivy botany post! I got injured in the field so I’ve been on crutches for a few weeks (overall I’m fine!). The plants here are Quercus (oak), Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia creeper) and the microscope images are maple leaves if I recall correctly. In the second you can see the split abscission layer.

This is why leaves stay on dead trees for a looooong while but fall off live trees in autumn.

🌿 柊 🌿

柊> hiiragi> (false) holly

Common Holly (Ilex) isn’t native Japan or much of Asia, so they don’t have a word for it. The plant known as 柊 is actually a look-alike called “False Holly” or “Chinese Holly”.

Even though we know for certain by now that they’re completely different plants, most people still translate 柊 to holly. Because the loanword version (ホーリ) is exactly identical to “holy” and no one will know what you’re talking about otherwise.

「ひいらぎ」 is also a fairly popular name for boys.

Mosses have teeth : )

So instead of flowers -which came hundreds of millions of years after mosses- mosses have capsules to hold spores. A little hat pops off the top of the capsule and you get these swirly sparkly structures that help scatter spores like a salt shaker! Those are the peristome “teeth”. The word “stoma” in peristome means mouth.
