What if… The “love” that Professor Torres was (initially) referring to wasn’t specifically about romantic love but love for country and love for fellowmen?
What if Fidel is an adventurer from the real world that was trapped in the world of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo because of his love for our country, Las Felipinas (Presently known as Philippines) and his love for the novel characters made him choose to stay which the book/s later developed his presence as Juan Crisostomo Ibarra’s best friend.
To travel from one world to another is a touch of undiscovered magic. Therefore, what if… The reason why Fidel Maglipol Reyes wasn’t able to comprehend Maria Clara (Klay) Infantes’ terminologies as well as not seeing Mr. Torres on Episode 79 is because he was slowly losing his glimpse of reality but then, during the scenario where Klay conducted CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), Fidel remembered and explained the medical procedure being done which was only developed 73 years later.
Maybe, the great love between Fidel and Klay will eventually conquer all hindrances in between that will hopefully lead to Fidel coming home to the real world with Klay.
