About: There are spoilers ahead for Labyrinth Lost and Bruja Born. Rose's family has been in tumult since her sister, Alex, came of age and trapped them all in Los Lagos, and Lula brought half the city back from the dead. Their father has finally returned, but the family's attempts to go back to normal and pretend everything is fine only frustrate her further. When a spell for truth on her Deathday goes awry, Rose and her father find themselves swept into the world of the Adas, a faerie realm in the Caribbean. If she ever wants to go home, Rose will first have to help them save their world. Trigger warnings: character death, parent death, abusive households, captivity, violence, abandonment.

Thoughts: Overall, I really enjoyed this series, but this is probably my least favorite in the trilogy. That has more to do with my issues with fantasy than anything specific to this book, so I hope my lukewarm feelings don't put off any genuine fantasy lovers. Of the three, I liked Bruja Born the best because it was more urban fantasy (and also, you know, zombies). Wayward Witch introduces a new fantasy world that's more faerie-centric, but there just isn't much that sets it apart from other books about faerie worlds. I was quickly bored with the same evil rulers/save the kingdom narrative that's present in so much YA fantasy.

I found Rose more difficult as a main character too. Although I relate to her desire for everyone to leave her alone with a book, those aren't the most compelling protagonists to read about, and I could never quite get a handle on her attitude. Her relationship with her dad is complex enough to be interesting, but as an adult reader rather than the target audience, I found it more difficult to see Rose's perspective. Easily my favorite character was Lin, a nonbinary bruhex with a sweet character arc. My favorite thing about this series as a whole is the way Córdova blends Latinx culture with her fantasy worlds; I just wish more of them had taken place in Brooklyn so we had a better look at the magic system.
