REVIEW: Starchild & the New Romantic shine with studio debut

Starchild & the New Romantic may sound like an entire band, but it's actually just one man, Bryndon Cook, a New York singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who bears his sole on his full-length studio debut, Language, available now from Ghostly International. According to the

Porches has just shared the music video for a new song titled “Country”, his first off of his upcoming and as of yet untitled album. “Country” is an immensely refreshing departure from his unobtrusive and borderline-sterile last LP Pool. His sense of restraint and the limited sonic parameters he's working with here are still well-intact from Pool, but there’s an immense vulnerability that shines through here that wasn’t nearly as exposed previously. With little more than chiming piano chords, murky synths, and his longing falsetto, he creates a simple but mesmerizing suite that exudes intense longing. It’s a gorgeous track right from the start, but towards the end Blood Orange and Bryndon Cook contribute some ridiculously gorgeous vocal harmonies that completely elevate what was already his best song by a considerable measure. It’s naked and unnerving, and thankfully without overtly polished production masking the melodies that coat these bare chested affections. “Can you do no harm?/Break the water with your arm” he exclaims desperately, a pleading that one get’s the sense is falling on deaf ears. “Country” is sparse but extraordinary, the kind of bedroom synth ballad one might make with no intention of anyone ever hearing it, while of course all who do are all the better for it.

Porches’ 2016 sophomore album Pool was one of my favorites that year, so my heart fluttered with joy when the New York based band lead by Aaron Maines shared a fresh new tune via a music video Maines co-directed with Nick Harwood today. Country even features backing vocals by Bryndon Cook and Dev Hynes, that ever amazing artist also known as Blood Orange. The song blooms effusively, a delicate and tender suffusion that slowly takes hold of every corner of the heart. Maine says that this is the last song he wrote for his new album. He’s been hard at work this past year working on the follow up to Pool. Country brings us his signature vulnerability with a fresh baroque and chamber pop like leafiness. Download Country, here.
