[ ⬇️ start of read ⬇️]
Carlos Sainz Jr. had a promising start at Monza. Consistent P3s that Friday for FP1 and FP2, a decent place for FP3 and P13on Quali that Saturday, and P11 on the race. Decent scores. But before Baku, he'd decided to fly over to the Philippines to maybe take a break, experience the tradition, or see a childhood friend...
you.
Upon landing in Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Carlos was seeing many new things. Christmas here, Christmas there. Jose Mari Chan songs start to play in the taxi on the way to the Manila Peninsula, which was in Makati, where you were and worked. Lanterns and lights filled the kalsada and streetlight posts, illuminating the night and catching the attention of many young ones and a few Lolos and Lolas who happened to have night walks.
The next morning, Carlos had decided to visit your workplace to ask for a tour of the lights, or maybe the neighborhood since it was still morning. It was hard for him to navigate Makati, with you having to text him the directions to your office.
"Carlos! You're here!" You come out of the elevator, still in the Ferrari shirt and red running shoes Carlos had gifted you last year. "Mabuhay and welcome to our, well, nice country."
"Salamat." Carlos says, with his Spanish accent and very wrong pronounciation. He'd brought over Williams merch this time, to remind you of his change of teams from Ferrari to Williams.
"For you, mi amiga."
"Salamat sa iyo, Carlos." You laughed, taking the merch respectfully and putting it in your bag. "Let's go, shall we?"
You and Carlos started off at Ayala Greenbelt, eating at Manam for lunch so he could experience Filipino dishes. Kare-Kare, all that jazz. He opted to try out Halo-Halo, which he said tasted like heaven. Arcades, shopping, movies...
Walking around the area, many fans would ask Carlos for an autograph, but he'd rush as he'd not want to waste his precious time with you signing stuff.
"It's almost nighttime." You checked your watch. 6PM. Almost time when the light show at Ayala Triangle. Many Filipinos travel to Ayala Triangle just to see the colorful light show at night from 6PM to 10PM. "Almost time for the lights!"
"Lights?" Carlos asks you curiously, running a hand in his hair. "There are so many lights around already. Streetlights, houses-"
"To Ayala Triangle!"
💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Ayala Triangle was a majestic sight at night. You and Carlos sat on a bench looking at the light show, many filipinos taking pictures, a lot of jolly little gremlin children jumping and playing, many parents and grandparents in awe, and some office workers and foreigners also watching.
You and Carlos shared some Jollibee food while watching, him trying to give a fry to a random Zebra Bird.
"I'm definately coming back for this next year." Carlos smiles.
"As you should."
