In which people were shot, sliced, snarked at and everyone was sorely disappointed to see Lebeaux not get punched in the face by a muscular miqo’te monk.
“A nameday is a celebration of one’s continued existence on this wretched plane and a survival through another turn of its miseries. It calls for the sort of good cheer, merry making and carrying on that requires and entire sennight’s worth of confessions to absolve after the day is done. Why, in my youth, I would drag the occasion out for two or three days. Yet here you are letting yours go to waste.” - Lebeaux Desrosiers, on the importance of namedays
Thank you to everyone who showed up to make sure the Golden Fox’s resident cinnamon-roll-kitty was surrounded by good people on his big day.
C’lai Nunh tilted his head towards Rathien, eyes motioning that direction but stopping midway. He silenced, for he anticipated some serious Ishgardian fandango would be about to take place...
Rathien Tia utterly ignored the elezen, instead taking the time to read over another one of the leves that they had been perusing together. "It's too early in the morning for your harassment, Master Desrosiers," he said after a long moment. "So if you don't have anything actually pertaining to work please kindly GO AWAY."
Lebeaux Desrosiers tilted his head ever so slightly. His usual scent was of cleaning alcohol first and foremost, masking the smell of lavender soap, brandy and a trace of lilies to those with sharper noses. Yet today his coat had managed to absorb the stringent smells of an apothecary. A fair indication that he like did have things he was in the midst of doing. Things that didn’t immediately include the two miqo’te, yet when he heard the acidity in Rathien’s voice he made the decision that such matters could wait. “Quite right, you’ve just reminded me.” He practically purred as that standard smiled curled, the sort of oily smirk that started in a corner and ended nowhere good. “I was recently going through medical reports and I noticed that yours and your mate’s are suspiciously absent.”
C'lai had turned to continue listening to Rathien's reading of the various loose contracts, leaning once again with his behind on the counter. Head lowering and ears motioning, he expected more to be read then, having his mind on the chosen hunt... but then Lebeaux once again spoke to them... and as he heard of medical reports, he lifted his head a bit, then turned his face at Rathien in questioning motion, remarking with a shrug of his shoulders, knowing nothing of it.
Rathien continued to ignore the elezen, until he mentioned the medical records, at which his ears went up and he finally looked back over his shoulder at the elezen. "I was not aware that company law stated that I had to provide such a copy," he started in the same coolly distant tone. "And I've been here for nearly three moons now." He narrowed his eyes. "Furthermore, medical records belong to their rightful owners; you can not make me provide a copy without my consent which, if it's you asking for them, the answer is strictly, no."
A hand waved in an almost lazy gesture as Rathien immediately ruffled and glared at him. “Keep your previous records, I’ve no interest in them.” Lebeaux stated. “There is in fact a separate form. A small questionnaire that needs to be answered in the presence of one of the medical staff.” He explained calmly, though the smirk was quickly gaining traction and looking rather smug indeed. “Basic information, pre-existing conditions that may have an effect on work, that sort of thing.” He glanced between Rathien and C’lai. “I was lax in enforcing it previously, trusting the honesty of the staff.” He lied with a sigh as though he had been the trusting and benevolent caretaker of them all rather than the borderline dictator.
C'lai had an instinct for lies... or perhaps just an unhealthy amount of distrust. From what he had witnessed, heard and from Rathien's accounts of the man, he had no reason to not endure such practice. As he spoke, C'lai tilted his head slightly... a doubtful expression taking over, much like the cautious animal. He tensed, visibly... all too noticeably for one whose frame was like his. The man's voice tone all too vulnerable to interpretation, he chose to keep his distance of the matter. His piercing emerald hues set directly on Lebeaux, his expression neutral, apart from the stare of unfocusing pale pupils.
Rathien looked over the leves and finally rolled one up, stuffing it in the pocket of his tunic. "Sounds like a personal problem," he said with a distinct edge to his voice. "One that does not involve me in the slightest." Finally turning around he stared up at the elezen with a cold gaze and flattened ears. "I will go to Lady Kasumi about this, and if it is indeed necessary, then I will be happy to submit to the exam...be that Idristan does it. Or Lady Enx or Lady Kaede." He said each name very slow and deliberately as if he could not make it more clear he wanted nothing to do with Lebeaux.
“You are employed by the Tradehouse, are you not?” Lebeaux mused slowly. The thing that made it difficult to tell when Lebeaux was lying was that it rolled off of his tongue easily as his own name. Which may have been because the name itself was a lie to boot. There was no baseline for honesty. “Therefore, it becomes your problem as well. It’s becoming more frequent that unnecessary complications are getting in the way of minding the health and safety of this organization. Complications that could be avoided with an onze of prevention. Which is why I am re-instating the exam.” Though the way he said it, one could have sworn ‘exam’ was spelled ‘inquisition’.
Lebeaux Desrosiers made every impression of taking diligent notes at this point. He had intentionally skipped the more prying questions and gone instead with something of a soft check by limiting the timeframe of ‘recent injuries’ to within the last three moons. C’lai seemed more than happy to discuss these matters, even going so far as to show off his scar as well as describe in painful detail the training regimes he went through. Neat cursive had given way to idle curlicues and looping doodles rather than words. Merely moving the quill for the sake of appearing to be writing at this point. He did notice how smug the miqo’te seemed to be as he intentionally stated that there had been no illnesses within the past three moons, see how proud he was of himself. “I’ll need an extra sheet or three to fit in all of these ‘r’s.” He mused mainly to himself before clearing his throat. “Now pre-existing conditions.” He stated, smiling serenely at the blonde miqo’te even if he couldn’t see it. “Anything currently effecting your health and well-being, not including those you just mentioned in your recent history, whether it be an ailment passed down from your parents or one acquired later in your life.”
C'lai Nunh listened to the musings... unable to help himself to side smile. It was not the first jab at his accent, and it surely wouldn't be the last. A smile that died with the next question... A heavy seriousness set in while C'lai thought on how to answer... finally confirming by saying: "Yes." - he'd fold his arms, not seeking to elaborate, closing his eyes.
Rathien Tia would bristle ever so slightly, his tail waved back and forth. "So that previous statement about not caring about previous medical history was a lie. Why am I not surprised."
Lebeaux waited for a few moments. Then a few moments longer. Allowing the silence to drag on from waiting, to uncomfortable to downright rude. A dark brow quirked and along with it went the corner of his mouth. Amused by the response. The medic took his time refreshing the ink in his quill. “I said I’ll not need your previous medical records regarding him.” He corrected Rathien. The devil was in the details, after all. “I didn’t say I won’t be making my own. We are entirely within the terms of our agreement, still.” He shifted his attention back to C’lai. “’Yes’ will not suffice. We’ll need you to clarify.” He smiled too-sweetly at Rathien then to C’lai. “Should you need to be treated by one of the medics other than your mate, this information will be vital to ensure the pre-existing conditions are taken into account and you are treated accordingly.”
Rathien gritted his teeth. "That won't be necessary." After all if anything serious happened, he doubted someone else's aether would even be as effective. Chancing his gaze to C'lai he waved his tail. "You don't have to answer." He said simply. "We can leave."
Lebeaux wiped the quill’s nib clean against the edge of the inkwell again, scraping the sharpened end along the lip with a surgical precision to ensure that not a drop of ink was left on it to potentially drip on the medic. He leaned back in his chair and toyed idly with the feather, twirling it between his fingers to let it flutter chaotically almost like an injured birdwing. “You’re refusing to cooperate?” Lebeaux asked, his tone rising at the end to imply that he really did hope that was what Rathien was doing, or perhaps that it had been exactly what he had been planning on all along.
C'lai would respond: "I am awarrrre." - he'd roll his shoulder, leaning his head that same way. That single response both to Lebeaux and Rathien... he'd put an arm to the side, unfolding his arms and signalling to Rathien to hold: "I have a prrre-existing condition, though it has not, isn't, and will not limit my ability to perrrforrrm my duties - as it neverrr has." - he'd then keep his gaze forward. His hand to the side one to have Rathien not interfere, for C'lai knew his rights as a mercenary as well as the risks: "And so, I wish to keep it in confidentiality." - his brows would furrow as he retorted: "I have not lied out of rrrespect forrr yourrr position, and I seek now the same rrrespect in honourrring my wishes." - he'd return his arm to the fold, crossing with the other over his chest, awaiting the next question.
Lebeaux continued toying idly with the feather as he considered that. It would have been one thing to simply say ‘blindness’. And leave it at that. While he could have reasonably asked how it happened, that would have been outside the boundaries of what he was asking as the initial incident or injury would have been beyond the scope of a ‘pre-existing’ condition. Yet see how they danced and dodged around the subject. Well it seemed there was something far larger underneath, didn’t it. Just the sort of thing he’d love to dig his claws into and tear away at until the very bones were laid bare. It was becoming apparent that this wouldn’t be the route to do it. “How interesting.” He declared as he smiled oh-so-sweetly between them. “Then we’ll leave the condition as ‘confidential’. Should this come back and cause issue in the future I will be holding both of you personally responsible for all subsequent damages ...and I’ll need you both to sign off as such before departing.” He droned on calmly. “Shall we move along to the next section.”
Lebeaux Desrosiers came upstairs looking for a stray bottle of brandy and a bite to eat while the rest of the Company was off at some festival or another, doing the legitimate side of the business. He picked up the bottle, not bothering with a glass, and tucked a likely-looking riceball into his mouth, taking another in hand as he made his way to the lounge. He stopped short there. Finding there was already someone in residence. The medic made his way to a couch anyways, setting down the bottle to free his hand and take the snack from his mouth. “Why on hydaelyn are you staring out the windows if you can’t enjoy the scenery.” Was his oh-so-polite greeting.
C'lai Nunh's ears motion, lifting at the sound of the opening door, his eyes taken from the window, futile as it was. The scent ever so characteristic of Lebeaux; a brand that he would not soon forget. A cautious tension found its way to his flesh as his ears sharpened... he chose to set his hues again upon the window. His tail curled, as the question was presented... a wishful sigh taking place. The proud miqo'te would answer with seriousness in his voice: "To quench memorrry of what was lost..."
Lebeaux either didn’t notice or willfully ignored the sigh and the poetic phrasing of the serious words. All indicators that the miqo’te was feeling somewhat forlorn or wistful at the moment. “So you stand at windows and try to remember what it was like to look through them...”
Lebeaux settled into one of the plush couches and started in on the rice ball he had snagged. For all his complaints of Far Eastern cuisine he wouldn’t snub free meals at the moment. “Which means you weren’t born blind, but it’s a more recent condition.”
C'lai side smiled at the remark. A low scoff through his nostrils... spoken in such a way, it did sound, and clearly looked, like a pointless exercise. He'd cant his head lightly, remarking: "... If you say it like that..." - a conceding tone to the other's comment to his actions. He'd close his eyes, his eyes deviating then from the window and then stopping somewhere high on the wall opposite to him, as he turned slightly, responding: "A perrrceptive obserrrvation. Indeed, therrre was a time when sight was mine to take forrr grrranted. Nowadays, I but hold some images and notions in my head of what it once was."
Lebeaux scoffed around a mouthful of rice and pickled plum. “If you say it any which way you like it’s utterly ridiculous for a blind man to be looking out the window. Perhaps you should try an art gallery next.” He suggested as he reached for the brandy. He hadn’t been expecting company, so he simply grabbed one of the glasses already left out and poured into it, taking a small sip from that rather than straight from the bottle. Even if C’lai couldn’t ‘see’ the faux pas he refused to do so. “Or skip that entirely and paint your own. I suspect the results may be nearly as amusing as my proposed darts tournament.” He mused.
C'lai scoffed, turning his head again towards the window. Flaring his nostrils a few times, hearing then the sound of pouring liquid... alcohol... foulest of beverages. He'd say in an agreeing tone: "It is." - and then returned to his stern, callous expression to the outside. The glinting emerald colour all too noticeable in the dim lighting of the night. He'd ponder on the two activities thrown into the conversation: "Darrrts would be entirrrely possible. Painting... not so much." - as if the elezen's remark had not been made in mockery, but was instead a serious consideration. He'd finish then with a jab of his own: "None escape perrrforrrming rrridiculous deeds, I've come to find... Stupidity is as cerrrtain as the Sunrrrise and Sunset... All a matterrr of time."
Kyt'ir Gahre's mind was going blank, an eye drifting shut as Lebeaux Desrosiers kept on paying attention to his ears. The Keeper looked like he was about to doze off under the elezen's attention, only to slowly sit back up. "So, how much is it? For the somnus, that is."
Lebeaux moved both hands to the act, currently trying to reduce the miqo’te to a purring puddle. All the better to sell drugs to, my dear. “Hmmm, well. Enough to tide you over until your next visit? I would say we could set some aside for you for a fairly reasonable price.”
Kyt'ir was enjoying every moment of it, his tail flicking about each time Lebby's hand happened to find a weak spot. "That sounds agreeable." He murmured, the particulars of the detail lost amidst pure relaxed bliss. That crisp white leather jacket seemed to be the only thing keeping the miqo'te from melting into a puddle.
Lebeaux nodded, his smile growing ever more amused as the serious-seeming miqo’te mage drifted further and further. He paused just before the other was entirely lost, taking his hands away and clearing his throat. Waiting expectantly for a wallet to be produced. He fished a small parcel out of the somnus box, ready for the exchange. “Just dump out your gil, then. I’ll count it for you.” He offered ever so sweetly, placing a hand back at the other’s ear to resume the distracting petting.
Kyt'ir blinked, thinking it over. This sounded like a bad idea, so he was rather hesitant in fishing out the pouch of gil that he had set aside for the night. It landed on the table with a thud that was on the rather heavy side of things. Certainly no small amount of gil - he wasn't going to get a good deal on that somnus. "I imagine that should be enough?"
Lebeaux slid the pouch of gil closer, opening it up and sifting through it one-handed. The other hand busily petting the charmingly naïve miqo’te’s hair and ear to keep him busy as he counted it out.
This much for the somnus.
This much for the sweets he had been eyeing at the bakery.
This much for the shirt he needed tailored.
Perfect. Lebeaux slid the pouch back towards Kyt’ir, considerably lighter, as well as the packet of somnus. Lebeaux leaned in, pressing his smooth cheek against the small man’s to speak into one of those velvety ears. “Don’t tell anyone I’ve given you such a good deal, they may become jealous. It’s merely because I’ve grown fond of you.” He lied in a sultry whisper. “It’s been a pleasure, Kite. Truly.” He noted before leaning away and dropping his hand to the table to rake in the proceedings.
Kyt'ir's cheeks flushed red again. Certainly, he might be angry when he woke up the next morning and realized the deal was not exactly a fair one, but... for now he was completely relaxed. "I'll be here next time. Perhaps for a private visit before then?" He mused, slowly rising to his feet.
C'lai Nunh observed the shameless act. A reprimanding expression as he narrowed his eyes slightly, hearing both the elezen's voice and the gestures... the sounds forming the tri-dimensional image of events transpiring clearly in his mind. His ears sharpened as he wrinkled his nose. A sigh... he had a contract with the Golden Fox... and to reduce profit out of just price, when he had heard Kasumi herself advocating for arbitrary prices on the linkshell; had him disarmed for a censuring act. Besides, he was but paid to be a guard for the company... He tensed visibly though, rolling his shoulder. With money exchanged, business was concluded... and as such, he sought to abscond the premises.
hey lets play how hot is that character: C'lai Tia
Not My Type | Alright | Cute | Adorable | Pretty | Gorgeous | LORD MERCY
Tiergan’s the kind of man where his perception of people colors how beautiful he thinks they are. That said, even though he’s not met C’lai yet - Tiergan is definitely a fan of the physically fit. C’lai’s hunger for self-improvement also earns him some bonus points.
