we’re adults, kind of // james & mary
Mary had been happily spending most of her break tucked away in Portree with her family. There was certainly some stress, as she had been concerned about, whenever the topic of conversation got too close to what was happening in the magical world. But a few days in, she got the hang of veering discussions away before they got in too deep and the cracks in her lies began to show. After that, it was days of visiting all her favorite spots in her hometown and nights curled up by the fire drinking hot cocoa with the rest of the Macdonald clan. Exactly the cozy break she needed.
But it could only last so long. After Christmas wrapped up, time seemed to fly towards New Year’s, which meant before she knew it she would be headed back to Hogwarts. Which was always tinted by a twinge of sadness at having to say goodbye to her family and her home again. But this year felt different. Because this time, when she got off the train at Hogsmeade, it would be her last time heading back to school. One last semester before she graduated and was sent off into the real world
It was a terrifying prospect. Which meant Mary needed to find as much distractions as possible to keep from thinking about it.
That day, the distraction was Quality Quidditch Supplies. She had gotten some gift money that she was eager to spend on a much needed broom care kit and she was worried that once schoolwork hit in full force again there would be limited time to spend making too many trips down to Hogsmeade. Of course, once she left her little corner of Scotland for the first time in days, it didn’t take her long to run into a familiar face.
“James!” The moment she walked in the door of the shop, she recognized her friend’s tousled hair from a couple rows away. “Oh, it’s good to see you. My break has been so quiet without you guys around.”
