Headcanon that Thanatos (but I think he doesnt have kids) and Hades kids (even Hypnos, maybe) have more health issues because of their connection with death and the Underworld

Thanatos Cabin Headcanons

Their mortal parent was on the edge of death (e.g., terminal illness) when they met Thanatos, and his final gift to the parent before they died was the demigod child (similar to how Athena gifts children to her beloved)

aka Thanatos kids have hella parental issues (more so than the average demigod) due to their mortal parent being dead, as even Thanatos can't excuse what's inevitable

They can see how much life is left in a person when they meet someone's eyes, which is one of the reasons most Thanatos children avoid eye contact

Even if it's their father's job, many children of Thanatos are afraid of death and their loved ones dying due to how often it happens around them. they seem stop talking to people who are running out of time because they just can't face it, meaning that even though they don't tell anyone whose going to die, campers (and the dying person themself) can tell.

or, contrastingly, it's normalised in their mind and they encourage death with a smile, spending time with people in their final moments, reaping and leading the souls of their friends to the underworld themself out of love

Thanatos kids are usually more reserved and stoic though there are a few exceptions, and they seem to befriend children of Hebe, because they tend to stay youthful (and therefore a longer lifespan) on average

A lot of them are also friends with Children of Hades (more specifically and ironically, Hazel, who their father pardoned) because they have father's in the underworld

When they come to a certain age, intense emotions can make black feathers either fly in the air around them or make them sprout wings themself (just like Thanatos')

sometimes they can see/sense echoes of souls of the dead, more in places/around people where the dead person felt was important. for this very reason, some children of Thanatos prefer to wear headphones as it gets overwhelming, especially at a place where most die young like camp

most of them resent their father due to his absence (like almost all demigods) even if Thanatos tries to show love, he shows it through distance and the once-in-a-lifetime blessing (like he did by ignoring Hazel to let her live)

a common fatal flaw children of Thanatos have is recklessness -- a gift from their father was resistance to death, which is both a blessing and a curse, having to watch their loved ones die while they withstand life-threatening injuries. this can lead to them being reckless, knowing its less likely they'll die anyway, because their dad hates to see them leave, just as he did their mortal parent

This is part of why campers should never go snooping in the Thanatos cabin, they could be dragged down by the souls.

More Cabin 29 questions! About Ruth: Where is she from? What is her family like? Do the other girls in the cabin let her practice doing their hair? Does she practice floral arrangements with the flowers growing around camp (or in the forest, if they're by a forest)? How did she start liking flowers / hairdressing? Do the other girls help her with her anxiety when on adventures? What are some things she is talented at (even if she won't admit it/doesn't think she is)?

Where is she from? She lives near the city the ferry to the camp is located in, so she’s the most accustomed to the local weather and whatnot. There maybe times where the cabinmates return to the mainland for a field trip, and she’ll take the stance as resident tour guide.

What is her family like? Her parents are trying their best to help her in any way possible. She’s an only child, and pretty close with both her moms and all of her pets.

Do the other girls in the cabin let her practice doing their hair? Yeah! It takes her a while to bring up the courage to ask, but once she does, she has a lot of fun practicing different styles with everyone’s hair.

Does she practice floral arrangements with the flowers growing around camp (or in the forest, if they’re by a forest)? Yup! The other cabin members start making vases in crafts and set them by the windows for her to fill them with flowers.

How did she start liking flowers / hairdressing? Hairdressing was an early interest for her- playing with dolls and doing up their hair. She would practice on her friends and they usually walked away with a smile. The flower interest started with a school project (assume there’s a monster elementary school) where she found out there’s a language behind flowers while she was doing research.

Do the other girls help her with her anxiety when on adventures? At first not everyone understands why she shuts down, and the only person she’ll confide in is Trish, but after a few events, (one including a spirit haunting the cabin and causing Cintia to experience similar symptoms [BONDING! HURT/ COMFORT!]) she finds is easier to talk about. The weird thing about anxiety is that it actually can be useful in situations where there is actual, clear, immediate danger (hyper-focus and adrenaline rushes). It’s the moments where there isn’t any danger, and yet your brain is playing Horror Movie Foreshadowing Music™ on a loop where it’s a problem.

What are some things she is talented at (even if she won’t admit it/doesn’t think she is)? She has an amazing eye for color! Her flower arrangements have both meaning and are aesthetically pleasing. She’s not too shabby at the xylophone (having legs that can double as arms are really helpful). Oh, and can get pretty clever with some of the traps the girls set up (why do they need traps? More Cabin 29 questions! About Winona: Does she know any martial arts? What is her family like? What are her musical interests? Does she have any fears or dreams? Does she like to travel? Does she journal in her diary, or does she draw or write poetry (or any other thing or combination of these things)? What is her favorite teen romance book / movie / series? Who is her inspiration for life?

Does she know any martial arts? Not unless you count watching bad martial arts movies and doing your best to mimic the poses the actors do. Her fighting style is mostly punching- boxing, I guess. Perhaps she’ll get some actual lessons at camp.

What is her family like? I know she’s the oldest child in her family, but I’m not sure beyond that. She might live with her grandparents.

What are her musical interests? Hmm, she’s not much of a music listener, really. She doesn’t need to have headphones in all the time. But she does like high-energy stuff. Outside of that she doesn’t have much of a preference.

Does she have any fears or dreams? Oh, everyone has those! Winona is actually pretty insecure of her image. She hides most of the stuff she likes, like her books and her journal, regardless, she does entertain the idea of writing her own novel someday.

Does she like to travel? Oh, yeah! She loves getting to see new places and trying new things! She’s pretty interested in different cultures and languages, but doesn’t have much money, so she settles with watching other people vlog about their experiences in foreign countries.

Does she journal in her diary, or does she draw or write poetry? She mostly writes, sometimes vents, and occasionally tries writing out a scene or two between characters. There may or may not be fluffy fanfiction hidden in those pages.

What is her favorite teen romance book / movie / series? Her favorite book has to be this one were a time traveler messes up and goes a bit farther back than expected and their machine breaks. While in the past they meet up with writer who is also a werewolf and they eventually fall in love, but the inventor must get back to their time (it’s confusing, but the characters are genuine, she’ll insist [I came up with this plot using a random generator and spicing it up a little bit but I’m actually interested in it now]). Her favorite movies are those kung-fu movies staring Jackie Chan. The humor is spot-on for her. TV series? Probably some Cutthroat Kitchen.

Who is her inspiration for life? oof, this is difficult. For now I’ll go with J.K. Rowling. Getting out of poverty through her writing while also dealing with depression? Tough life, but she got through it and inspired a bunch of people in the process.

More Cabin 29 questions! (I'm just dropping a bunch of asks in your inbox. Answer them whenever you want :D). About Cintia: what kind of an engineer is she? Does she have a dream job? What is her family like? What kind of things does she knit (and do she and Trish bond over this)? Where is she from? Does she teach any of the others about stargazing (and if so, how does that go)? How old is she (actually this question goes for everyone)?

what kind of an engineer is she? Does she have a dream job? I haven’t decided yet and I don’t think she’s decided either. There are quite a few different areas within engineering, and she’s going to have to take some time to narrow down which section she’d like to specialize in (and a rustic camp maybe isn’t the most perfect setting for this).

What is her family like? She’s an only child who lives with her mom (who is also a lechuza- it’s where she gets it from). Cintia’s mother was concerned about her daughter’s powers, so she thought sending her to camp would help Cintia feel more comfortable with them. Cintia took some convincing to get used to the idea. I know she’s somewhat close to her grandfather on her mother’s side, but to what degree I’m not sure. I still haven’t decided on what happened to her father.

What kind of things does she knit (and do she and Trish bond over this)? “Bonding” isn’t the word I would choose. “Argue,” yes. Imagine coming back from lunch to see your hard work unraveled at the paws of your counselor! Cintia is still really new at knitting, so most of the stuff she makes is simple and lopsided, but she tries! She hopes to somehow combine this skill with engeneering (a la Mabel’s light bulb and boombox sweaters).

Where is she from? Still undecided. I described her as Latina before, but that was the wrong term (I apologize for that). I imagine her mother (and perhaps her father, still undecided) is from Mexico, so she would be of (at least half-) Mexican decent. She’s moved around quite a bit in her life, but she was born in Texas, and stayed in the south before moving northwards. As such, her English has a southern twang to it.

Does she teach any of the others about stargazing (and if so, how does that go)? The others really enjoy listening to her. Despite her cool exterior, she really can tell a story. Not like Alexis, who gets into character and really uses her body language, but in more of a calm narrator way. Her fascination powers her words and makes everyone listen. Until she gets into the technical stuff, where everybody else starts to zone out- Winona first, followed by Trish. Ruth tries to be polite and listen to as much as she can, but there’s so many numbers and dates that she can’t keep straight. Alexis is genuinely interested in space (more for the aliens though) and can keep up with what Cintia talks about.

More Cabin 29 questions! These are for any of the members of the cabin: What languages do any of them speak? What's everyone's choice in food? Where does everyone sleep in the cabin (like who takes the bunk by the door, who ends up on the floor in the night, etc)? What is everyone's favorite/least favorite camp activities? General questions: How big is the camp? Where is it located (by the mountains, sea, forest, lake, etc)? Is the camp a secret from society, or do lots of people know about it?

What languages do any of them speak? We’ve got a few multi-lingual characters here! Alexis knows Korean from her parents, but mostly uses English. Cintia mostly speaks English, but will sometimes mutter to herself in Spanish when she’s thinking hard (using some, ah, creative expressions she picked up from her abuelo). Winona wishes to learn some more about her Dakota ancestry and has picked up a few useful expressions, but not much more than that. Ruth has learned some basic French because the public school system made her.

What’s everyone’s choice in food? Hm… Alexis likes the dishes her dad cooks, like the egg bowls or ganghoe (rolls with scallions, carrots, and eggs), and her favorite dessert is hotteok (kind of like a pancake with the syrup as the filling), but she’s also a fan of good ol’ junk food: potato chips and popcorn especially. Cintia, being weak to salt, replaces salt shakers with vials of complicated spices and hot sauce to make her food less boring to eat. Winona has a bit of a sweet tooth. Her weakness is donuts (as in: she can’t hold back. She needs to eat them all). Ruth is quite the eater, and loves seafood (as long as it’s not octopus…) and salads. Trish, on the other hand, is a total carnivore.

Where does everyone sleep in the cabin? The cabin has three sections: when you first enter, there’s a bed to your left, and a few lockers a few feet away from the door that act as a separator between this area and the next. This is the counselor’s area. The next section has all the beds, a small square area with two bunk beds and small windows. Alexis and Ruth take the left one, with Alexis taking the top bunk. On the right, Winona takes the top bunk and Cintia sleeps on the bottom. In the back is the wash area and the back door that only opens from the inside.

What is everyone’s favorite/least favorite camp activities? Alexis really enjoys doing improv games around the campfire. She might not have considered it yet, but she’d be great in theatre. She also likes hiking and looking at the nature (and scanning for anything really abnormal in the trees). Cintia enjoys the archery classes there, even though she’s not that good at it. Winona likes hanging out at the stables, never fully getting over that horse-phase she had in elementary school, and she’s trying to get the courage to actually go riding some time. Ruth likes spending some time alone at the lake in the center of camp, and building increasingly complicated sandcastles while waiting to dry off. Trish likes whatever makes the girls happy and organizes various cross-cabin challenges, but if she gets the chance, she likes to take a break from watching the girls and spends a few hours in the Weaving Hut, where, yes, they have all kinds of strings and yarns and tools to work on everything from friendship bracelets to baskets.

General questions: How big is the camp?  Where is it located (by the mountains, sea, forest, lake, etc)? Is the camp a secret from society, or do lots of people know about it? Camp Avalon (which is also a working title. This might change) is fairly large for summer camp standards, but that’s because it’s one of the few spaces where monsters can really let loose and not disguise themselves. It’s actually an island with it’s own lake in the center! You have to ride a ferry to get there, so it’s quite the retreat. They still have indoor plumbing and a pretty okay cafeteria (that seems to like using potatoes a lot), but there’s not much internet connection or cell phone reception. It’s popular with monsters, but very hush-hush to humans. Thanks again for the questions! I’m kind of improvising some of this, but that’s okay! That means I need to think about these things! *casually slides into inbox* So, I hear you don't mind questions about your characters? :D I really liked your story idea and Alexis looks adorable. So: what does Alexis enjoy writing about / photographing? What is her family like? What are some of her personality traits? What are her likes / dislikes? Does she play an instrument? (feel free to answer or ignore any of my questions. whatever you want to do! :D) Also: Do you have any more OCs you want to chat about?

HELLO YES LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO EVERYONE!! Nah, not yet, let’s talk about Alexis first!

What does Alexis enjoy writing about/photographing? Alexis really likes getting a reaction out of people and making teaching fun. Her sort of journalism is less… conventional. I guess a more accurate term would be documentation… about cryptids.

What is her family like? She’s the youngest child in her family. It’s a bit of a tough relationship between her and her older siblings: a pair of twins that are 17 years old- five years older than her. Because of this age gap, she find herself left behind often. But that’s okay. She has a really close relationship with her dad will often watch poorly-edited conspiracy documentaries and generic cop shows with him

What are some of her personality traits? Positives: friendly, go-getter, independent, great hugger. Negatives: impulsive and bit too confident in her (not-so-well informed) decisions.

What are her likes/dislikes? Well, again, she likes cheesy made-for-tv stuff that she watches with her dad, and the junk food that comes with these movie marathons. She occasionally reads comics or manga, but isn’t very attached to any particular series. She prefers to find the adventure herself. She doesn’t like getting caught going on said adventure (it has happened). One thing that deters her is her fear of small spaces. Makes it hard to sneak in the air vents like in the movies.

Does she play an instrument? No, but she’d love to learn the theremin.

Do you have any more OCs you want to chat about?I’ve got the rest of her cabin to talk about! A quick aside- the first few drafts of this idea had all the campers as humans and the entire staff here monsters in disguise. That all changed yesterday, so these are still rough ideas- but here’s the members of Cabin 29!

Cintia- a lechuza (owl-witch) who’s first love is engineering. She’s smart and resourceful, the paragon of elegance and manners, but the camp’s rustic style might be doing a number on her sanity. She loves teaching others, though, just for the sake of learning. She hates salty food and can’t stand rude language. She secretly listens pop music while doing calculations. In her spare time she enjoys knitting and stargazing with her telescope. Demiromantic.

Winona- I’m still not sure what monster Winona will be. She’s a bit of a serial Romeo and a total hopeless romantic. She likes cheesy teen romance (preferably the ones where the monster and their S/O live together peacefully). She even writes in a diary! But no one knows about any of this, because if they so much as tough her stuff, she’ll punch them into next Tuesday. Biromantic.

Ruth- an octopus-girl, she has tentacles for arms and six tentacle-legs. She often feels inadequate, like she isn’t “monstrous enough” compared to everyone else. She suffers from anxiety, and would probably stay behind on the others’ investigations if it weren’t for the fact that she’d rather be there and know exactly what they were doing. She likes to build sandcastles and collects tea sets. Her dream job would be to either become a florist or hairstylist, despite the disadvantage she has. Aro/ace

Trish- The counselor of Cabin 29. She’s a sphinx who enjoys puns, a good game of sudoku, and some fish. You can often find her working on a knitting project… which is to say, scattering it across the floor. She wants to be friends with all the members of the cabin, but is a little put-off by the human that managed to get in. She tries to stop the girls from going on their mystery-hunts after-hours, but they often ignore her and bolt into danger anyway. She worries about her “fledgling kittens” but also understands their need to explore. If only she knew their explorations were putting them into more danger than they let on…
