Chapter 24: The Way He Ignores You
This is awful. Theo brought you here to keep you safe. Now, thanks to you, everyone is going to die but you. You want to help, to protect others from your mess.
But Theo ordered you to keep the disk safe. You can’t keep going against him. It’s time for you to behave like a member of the Rebellion and do the right thing, even when it’s hard.
No, that’s not what your problem is.
Your whole life, everyone has asked you to compromise your values so that they can do what hurts them the least. It’s not that you can not be good; it’s that you’re pushed into an impossible choice every time.
Your parents had wanted to protect you and your brother and stayed at his side while forcing you to live. Neither of them could bear the loss of a child, so they died, leaving you to bear the loss of your entire family.
Theo couldn’t handle straying from the Jedi Code because he feared a fall to the Dark Side. So he asked you into a relationship without intimacy. You suffered every day, feeling like you weren’t enough, that you were a stain on his life.
He wanted to protect you, so he broke your heart to avoid your potential death. Instead, you suffered losing him. Even now, he’s willing to give you intimacy, but he hides your relationship. He’ll never give you everything you want, because deep down you believe he is still afraid of his own desires. He will never be what you want to be.
Worst of all is Cal. He allowed you to play relationship even though it made no impact on his plan. He got to enjoy your loving him all while knowing he was going to turn on you the moment he got his hands on Theo.
The people who claim to love you all seem to have no issue making demands of you, forcing you to prove your love by asking you to do painful things, and then having the audacity to tell you they are protecting you.
You’re done.
You’re not doing anything that you don’t want to do anymore. If you want to save someone, you will save someone; if you want to love, you will love; if you want to sacrifice yourself, well then you will die knowing you did the right thing. No longer will you let others decide for you; you’re going to do the right thing because it’s what you believe is the right thing.
The sound of stiff boots running down the white hall closes in on your hiding spot. You hold your breath, unsure whether it’s friend or foe. Bright red hair comes into view, contrasting the black Inquisitor uniform he wears.
Cal stops, looking at the fork in the hallway. You hold your breath. He is the last person you want to see. Your blood boils when you look at the man who so easily used and manipulated you. But there’s nothing you can do to him right now. You have to protect this part of the Rebellion by staying hidden.
Cal picks the path leading towards the hangar. He must be going after Theo too. A few moments later, a door squeaks open deeper into the med bay. Soft footsteps pad down the hall, and Tilia comes into view holding a blaster.
She looks afraid, not like a soldier. You know she’ll die if she tries to fight against the Empire. She’s too kind, too old, and not qualified for battle. Her hands are visibly shaking even from your distance.
You kick open the grate, and she whips around towards you. You crawl out with your hands up. “Tilia, it’s just me.”
The blaster lowers, and a look of relief floods her nervous features. “What are you doing here?”
“I was told to hide with this. I don’t know, but it’s a piece of sensitive information the Rebellion would prefer doesn’t fall into the wrong hands,” you say, explaining as quickly as you can. “Someone who was supposed to hide with it died, and I was in the right place at the right time.”
“I was hiding too. I’m not cut out for this. Not anymore. It’s been decades since I’ve used a blaster. I moved to this base only because they promised I wouldn’t see much action. All I wanted was to help the Rebellion without having to risk my life.”
Tilia cries, and you pull her into a hug. “I’ve been crying too; this is all so terrifying. Tilia, take my job. You’ll be doing the Rebellion a huge service, and you get to hide.”
She shakes her head. “I’m old; maybe it’s my time.”
“No, Tilia, it’s not. You need to live and keep the information safe. Please, I need to go help. There’s a second Inquisitor, and I’m scared for Theo. There aren’t many Jedi left, so someone has to warn him.”
Tilia appears torn, but she gives you a hug. “Thank you for trading me.”
“Thank you.”
You pull the blaster from her hands and help her into the vent. “Stay safe, Tilia. For me, and for the Rebellion.”
“I’m letting everyone down by not helping in the fight,” she says, looking disappointed in herself.
Your fingers don’t shake this time as you seal the vent cover in place. You offer Tilia a smile. “Even if we gain no ground, protecting what we have is important.”
You pick up the blaster, and run down the hall, chasing after Cal. He will not touch Theo, because you’re going to kill Cal before he gets the chance.
