Recently finished Polarity by Max Bemis and Jorge Coelho, which is about a disaffected bipolar NYC artist who discovers he really does have superhuman abilities in his unmedicated manic state and embarks on a campaign of half-cocked vigilantism against all of his longstanding bugbears- high school bullies, inauthentic artists, guys who overcharge for drugs. Cashes out in the vicinity of "Hipster Luthor Strode," or possibly Holden Caufield if he started moonlighting as a superhero in order to do something about all those phonies. I don't personally feel equipped to engage with the potential thorniness inherent to the premise- that various mental illnesses actually can give you city leveling superpowers- but It's pretty clearly written from the author's familiarity with living with Bipolar disorder; and the attendant discussion of whether being authentically yourself is even a meaningful idea in the context of mood swings and mood stabilizers, dovetails in obvious ways with the old super heroic dichotomy-of-identity tropes. And the art is kickass, which buoys the whole thing a lot. Equally compelling, at least to me, is where the story falls in the implicit progression of the setting as a superhero setting; the ultimate antagonists of the book are aware of the superheroic idiom, and although no such people exist in the public eye yet, their long term evil plan is to create that institution- which, within the logic of the comic, would amount to teams of mentally unwell young adults paraded around in costumes while kept selectively drugged up or severely undermedicated to whatever extent that the powers that be find useful. Preventing them from engineering this new status quo is treated as the big win of the comic, although it's left ambiguous whether the protagonist is going to go back to moonlighting as a vigilante on his own time. The overall thesis of the book seems to be that as unmoored as that power fantasy is from practicality, it's also undeniably very, very cool.
One of the best motifs in superhero media is when a character puts so much stock into their hero and/or villain persona that they start to consider there persona as the 'real' self to show how they have something seriously wrong with them.
hi
I'm making here collection of superhero stuff, mostly superhero media outside of giants like DC and Marvel and superpower exploration, worldbuilding and jokes. Feel free to tag me or send admissions.
Also if you have superpowered OCs (not necessary superheroes) you can send me that too
tags are inconsistent, but I try to sort things a bit
my posts - #superdump post
I reblog other people's art, sometimes under #superpowered oc tag, you can correct me if that's not an OC or I misinterpreted something
superpower ideas - #superpower ideas - as said in title
superpowers and superheroes communities here or anywhere else - #community builders
writing ideas, prompts, narrative tools - all under #narrative tag
I mostly reblog small artists and writers while avoiding big names, but sometimes people make valid points about giants universes (like Marvel or DC) tag is #big media and title name
I do not take responsibility for blogs from which I reblog posts, I'm not doing moral inspections
“What if we just… quit?” I ask suddenly.
Noah is washing the dirt and plaster off his arms, scrubbing them so hard that what little of his skin isn’t scarred is bright pink. His scars are so faded that they look decades old.
We’re only twenty, but he looks so much older.
“I can’t,” he says simply, not looking at me as he washes the last bit of soap down the sink. His voice barely even broke.
The television host’s voice chatters for us.
“Stormwalker and Supernova: heroes, or no better than the villains?” it says, staticky from poor connection.
Our apartment is on the outskirts of the city—even as government workers, we’re paid far too little to live downtown. Even if it’d make our jobs easier to be there.
“—today the two heroes helped make a record number of arrests, stopping three riots and two villain attacks within one day. But are they any—”
“Why not?” I ask, pushing myself off the stool and moving to put a hand on his shoulder.
He shrugs it off.
“Because it’s the right thing to do.”

good news: I'm pulling myself out of depression, going to see doctors, and I've got multiple writing and multimedia projects that are helping scratch my creative urges
bad news: turns out I'm incapable of writing a plot that doesn't end up tangled in metaphor and subtext. current project started as "C-list supervillain radio talkshow" and has since morphed into "C-list supervillain investigates the apparent murder-by-retcon of his archenemy after his popular rival is apparently erased from the timeline during a continuity reboot"
