Hear me out gang
Splint
AN: Pre- getting together. Both of them are 18.
AN: An infirmary fic as an excuse for them to be dorks in love and desperately flirting with each other.??
Caz was slouched against his workbench, idly looking over the herbs and bottles, rolling a spray of lavender between their fingers. Their hair was messed, their face pale, their clothes bloody. It was obscene really, how good they looked, even like this.
Lee realises all at once that he's staring, again. Heart pounding, ears violently red, he whipped his nose into the nearest cupboard and looked very thoroughly for the spare shirts that he very well knew were on the third shelf, where they always were. And because he needed to say something, anything, to make it seem like there was a reason for his looking, because he was, after all, a professional head medic, he ventured a casual:
‘You look like you could do with a black coffee.’
‘Ah could do with a cigarette actually.’
Lee couldn’t help his snort. ‘Yeah right.’
‘Shite. Ye’re right. I hate them.’ Caz sighed. ‘It’s a shame they’re so damn sexy.’
Lee grinned over his shoulder. His mistake. They were slouched against the wall, towelling their hair off and Lee had to actually clamp his jaw shut before he said something stupid like shame you’re so damn sexy and have to flee the country in humiliation.
He did the only reasonable thing he could and threw a faded camp tee and pair of jeans at them which Caz caught in one hand. Demigod reflexes.
‘Sorry. We only have orange.’ Lee wasn’t too sorry though, the colour clashed horribly with Caz's hair and it might mean he’d be able to concentrate again.
‘Ma very own purgatory. You do treat me.’
Caz grinned lazily and began to strip off their bloody, distinctively not-camp shirt, with the slightly satisfying thwack of wet fabric.
‘You know, there is a bathroom.’
The pebble cross of their St Andrews necklace swung in the air as they looked up from toeing off their jeans. ‘It’s faster this way, besides,’ they caught his eye with a grin, ‘you don’t mind.'
Lee didn't dignify this with an answer, just rolled his eyes and nodded to the chair nearby.
'Sit.'
'Aye, sir.' Caz saluted and winced immediately.
Lee snorted again. 'Usually people with arrows sticking out of them try to move as little as possible.'
'It's no just any arrow. Aggie did this herself. A'm very proud of her.'
'I can see.' Lee stuck his tongue out. 'Can I have a look at it? Or are you going to stay like this forever?'
Caz pretended to think. Their face was whiter than normal, the only hint of the pain they were good at hiding.
'Mibbe,' They began magnanimously, 'Ye can look at it.'
'Your kindness knows no bounds, now shush and let me look.'
He felt Caz's eyes on him as he pressed against the sensitive swelling, as he ran fingers down to their hand and asked them to squeeze.
‘What’s it look like doc? Am A gunna make it?’ Caz looked up sideways at Lee with a weak grin.
‘Mmm you might just pull through.’ Lee spared a sideways glance at them, smile tugging despite himself. ‘Can I move it?’
‘Baby A’m all yers’,
Lee ignored their words with practiced disinterest and pressed one hand flat against their pectorallis major, and tugged the fletching with the other, short and sharp. Caz grunted as the arrow slid out and Lee inspected the head (grass-stained, unsanitary) with a curled lip.
‘You need a tetanus shot.’
‘A’ll take ma chances,’ muttered Caz darkly.
Lee only laughed. ‘You can’t still be afraid of needles Caz. You have like 9 piercings.’
‘A’m a martyr to ma own style’.
Caz watched him with narrowed eyes as he came closer, shot in hand, and began to slip off the bench. They would have escaped too, fast as anything, but Lee was well practiced and stepped in closer, leg between Caz’s, spare hand wrapped round their bicep.
‘Nuh-uh, I don’t think so.’
This close he could see their Adam’s apple bob, hear the slight hitch in their voice. And, well, Lee was only a man. He couldn’t quite help his voice dropping, ‘What happened to baby I’m all yours hm? How the mighty have fallen.’
Caz shivered and purposefully did not look at Lee or, Lee thought, more likely, the needle in his hand.
‘Tha was before,’
‘Before?’
They swallowed, ‘before A knew ye’d do evil things’
‘I see,’ said Lee indulgently. ‘Well. You can stop tensing because the evil things are over now.’
Caz frowned and then frowned deeper when Lee stepped away to post the needle in the sharps box.
They looked at their wound incredulously. ‘ye– ye’ve done it?’
‘I’ve done it. Not so bad now was it? You didn’t even notice.’ Lee bit his tongue just a little teasingly.
Caz looked incredulous? Stricken? Jaw dropped? ‘Ye traitor. A trusted ye and ye distracted me with pretty eyes and stabbed me?!’
‘I’m sorry for my truly abhorrent crime. Next time I will pin you down and make you watch.’
‘Next time…’ and Caz muttered a few words under their breath which Lee was pretty wasn’t a curse but he decided to avoid stone fruit for the next few days just in case.
‘Am I forgiven if I give you a nice healing salve?’ He waved a glass jar and bandages and Caz sighed theatrically.
‘Ah suppose Ah’ll have mercy this time.’
Lee grinned lopsidedly. He ventured closer to Caz and unscrewed the jar of homemade salve, holding it out to Caz who immediately stuck their nose in it like a cat to investigate.
‘Honey?’
Lee hummed in the affirmative and dabbed some on his fingers, ‘And other things.’
Their grin up at him did something dopey to his heart and Lee should be used to the way his heart caught every time he saw them, should be used to the ache between the spaces of his ribs, should be used to his lungs going on strike. But still. This.
sorry this is so rushed I was suddenly seized with the idea and had to get it down before I forgot.
