"'I just don't get why' is probably the starting point of 50% of my stories." Now I'm insanely curious about the specific "whys" that inspired your last few stories. Would you be willing to share a few of the questions that started you writing, or is that more of a “If I could explain it in something other than poetry, I wouldn’t have had to write a poem to say it.” situation?
So partly it’s a joke, because the quickest way for me to end up writing something is to decide firmly in my head that it makes no sense and I can’t possibly see why that would happen, at which point my inherent contrariness pops up with ten reasons why it would. :P
But more broadly the central big ‘why’ of most of the Transformers stories so far is ‘why are the Decepticons fighting the war.’ If you accept the premise that Optimus Prime and the Autobots are fundamentally nice mechs who would like to live in peace, then there needs to be a substantial reason for this war to be happening on the Decepticon side. And the answer doesn’t necessarily have to be a reason that I would endorse, just a reason that I find interesting (unlike “they’re evil” which I find boring).
I don’t have just one answer to the question -- there are all sorts of answers. The great thing about writing fiction is I don’t feel that I have to have the answer. It can just be the answer for the length of the story I’m writing.
