Tuesday, January 30: Dredg, “The Tanbark is Hot Lava”

Catch without Arms played like a fusion of Deftones and U2, which frustrated many fans expecting a continuation of the artier sounds of Leitmotif and El Cielo. Dredg’s third album was certainly more straightforward in its song structures, though Gavin Hayes’ lyrics maintained their esoteric and slightly humorous bent. But more than that, the band seemed to adopt the approach Rush took in the early ‘80s, trying as many new sounds, styles and textures as possible while staying within standard song times and arrangements, so “The Tanbark is Hot Lava” hit hard and straight between the eyes, but also squeezed in random noises throughout the verses and weaved and bobbed around Hayes’ dynamic vocals. Terry Date’s crisp production gave the song clarity, and Dredg got right to the point, which for many fans was actually beside the point, but then again, Catch Without Arms was also the band’s first true major-label effort, and Interscope was likely expecting something a little more accessible. And it must be said that even if their basic approach was different, “The Tanbark is Hot Lava” remained uniquely Dredg, capturing the band’s idiosyncrasies and charm in one easily digestible package.
