The Berbers, Roma, Sinti, Bedouins, Tuaregs, Mongols, and finally the Kyrgyz… What do these ethnic groups have in common? They are #Nomads ! The word "nomad" is derived from a Greek phrase that means "to roam in search of pasture." As the name speaks for itself, nomads do not have a fixed residence and move around as the seasons change. They are on the go in search of food, water, and suitable feeding areas for their livestock. Today, 30-40 million nomads or semi-nomads live all over the world. For any nomad, the capacity to move fast and effortlessly is crucial. The #yurt has been the #traditional housing of #CentralAsian nomads, including the Mongols, Tuvins, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and Turkmens, from ancient times. The tündük, a spherical shaped wooden structure on top of the yurt through which the smoke escapes; kanats, foldable wooden frames that make up the yurt's wall; and the uuks, long wooden poles that connect the kanats, the main body of the yurt, with the tündük. The Kyrgyz call it “Boz üy” which means “a grey house” because of the color of the felt that covers the spherical construction. In the early 1900s, #Kyrgyzstan was nomadic. The main transition of the Kyrgyz to settled life began in 1931, and in the late 1930s, the Kyrgyz tribes all over the country became settled in villages and towns as a result of collectivization. However, not all nomads adopted the new lifestyle. After gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, a huge percentage of the population returned to a nomadic lifestyle. Today, they may be found all across Kyrgyzstan's mountains. They could be considered semi-nomadic because they spend the winter in their villages. In April or May, these families travel from their village to the jailoo (highland pastures) to look after the sheep, horses, cows, and other livestock until September. Nowadays, holidays, traditional crafts, poetry and music, cuisine, and manner of life are all tied to nomadism.
