Moving On Is Hard To Do.
I decided to watch Live at the Paradesio last night in full. For those who don't know; Live is a rock band most noted for their 90,s alt-rock albums such as Throwing Copper, Secret Samadhi, and The Distance To Here. The Paradesio is a full length concert movie. On it is one of the best live versions of The Dolphin's Cry out there. Watching it gave me such a bitter sweet nostalgia.
Live had been my favorite band for about 2 decades. I say had because back in 2009 the took a hiatus which eventually lead to a break up only for the 3 original musicians ( Chad Gracey: drums, Chad Taylor: guitar, and Pat Dahlheimer: bass) to reform Live sans the original singer Ed Kowalczyk. Apparently, animosity was brewing between the front man and the rest of the boys and a huge public fall out occurred. Social media sites and fan boards blew up in to an all out war. Quite honestly, it was not only traumatizing to see a group of childhood friends with such amazing chemistry on stage cut at one another; but also so heart breaking to see fans who came together sharing the common bond of love for this band attack one another over their feelings on the matter. A lot of people took sides and of course that is natural.
Me, I just wish there wasn't a side to have to take. I know that it is wishful thinking, but hey some people were happy with the split so I think it has to be said. Especially since I felt like a big part of my life disappeared when the split happened. Since much of the first decade of the 2000's Live seemed to be non-stop touring, I looked forward to seeing their shows several times throughout the spring and summer months. And let me tell you, it was always a good time! Left with out for the past several years has had me feeling like a junkie in need of a fix.
Now here is the part where I let my opinion come in to play. Quite recently it was the 20th anniversary of Throwing Copper. Live with a new front man played a special show in Atlantic City for this occasion playing the whole album in its entirety. Part of me so wanted to go to be a part of this special event and the other part knew it would be too depressing to hear the beautiful songs being sung by someone who had nothing to do with the birth of the album or had been singing them for the past 20 years. As a matter of fact I have really no desire to hear any of Live's songs sung by any one other then the original front man Ed Kowalczyk. Much like I really do not like hearing songs like Lakini's Juice or They Stood Up For Love with out the heart and soul that the guitarist Chad Taylor put in to them.
Both sides are of course touring and moving on in their careers. Ed has 2 albums out now and Live is set to release their first album with the new singer. I am not quite sure if I am going to pick it up, just like I am not quite sure if I am going to get Ed's new one yet. I think I may just want to live in my bubble of the past and just keep rocking out to the LIVE of old. Always hoping for a time to come when they will come together again.
