Chaenotheca trichialis
Pin lichens are pretty weird. They look so different from other lichens because phylogenetically, they split from most of the other lichens long, long ago, and developed those characteristic, long-stalked, mazaedioid apothecia (aka the pins). C. trichialis has black stalks topped with brown mazaedium, often obscured by white pruina dusting the surface. It has a crustose basal thallus of greenish granules or squamules. It grows on acidic tree bark and lignum in boreal and temperate forests, and has been found on all continents except Antarctica. C. trichialis, not satisfied with being just a unique pin lichen, also has a rare tichococcus green algae photobiont.
