Prop design

This Grimoire is my prop for the Jekyll and Hyde project. In my previous post I have my research based on why I chose a grimoire and the relevance to my screenplay. 

I decided to use the photos off Pinterest I found as inspiration. I started off with doing sketches and mixing the parts of the books I liked the most together.

After doing a couple of different types of sketches, I decided to keep the glass bottles in the book as I really like that for the whole overall design. I also added ripped paper to make the book look very used and scrap book like which I really liked the look of and ended up using in the final design as well.

After I had coloured the book i thought it look a bit too plain and empty but I added a layer of texture over the book itself and turned down the opacity which really made the book look more used/ old and rugged which is exactly what I wanted.

I also chose the colour scheme of the book before actually drawing it out so I based the design off the colours because I really wanted to make sure that the book represents both Evaline and Eva in its colour scheme especially since in a way its Eva’s creator.

Character design style insp.

Finished screenplay and analysis.

My screenplay hasn't changed much since the last post on here other than some editing to the dialogue and taking out some of the descriptions as I was over the 1000 word limit. It’s a shame that the word count is only 1000 as I feel without some of those descriptions it doesn't really suck you into the universe as much. The plus side is technically it doesn't mess with the screenplay at all or the narrative so it would be a bigger deal if it was a book I was writing. 

I also changed some of the dialogue between the girls as I didn't think the part where Michi and Kate were poking fun at Evaline really made sense or came across clearly as to what was happening then because of my poor writing skills and it didn't completely fit in with the atmosphere of the rest of the story.

I then worked on my Analysis of the script which is just a combination of things I've learnt, mistakes/ challenges, research and other things that went into making this......

Final character bible pages

I decided to re-arrange and update the bible pages a bit so they looked a bit more finished and professional.

This is what they look like now...

I chose to go with the overall theme of greens as I thought it goes well with both Eva and Evaline's colour scheme so it fits with the overall vibe and looks allot more complete than it did before in my opinion.

I didn't colour all of the pages as it was necessary for all of them but my favourite page by far was the prop design one, I really enjoyed making the original concepts and sketches of them.

Bible pages done

These are the rest of the bible pages I’ve completed. I checked during a tutorial that they don't need to be in colour other than the turn around and character poses......

These are the finished character bible and doing this has really made me realise I enjoy prop design allot more than character design, so that something I would like to continue in the future.

It was quite hard to keep the facers looking the same in the different expressions pages but you can still tell its the same character. Though I might go back and iterate it if I have time.

Also for the character walk cycle I’m going to be doing it in AE like how we’ve been doing the lip syncs because I do just generally want to practice doing it that way more.

Lecture with Carla

I got an email reply from Carla with some feedback of my screenplay as I asked her to read over it, this was the feedback....

I totally understand what Carla means by add specific character voices because the way all the girls talks seems really similar and I think I’m going to go over the dialogue again and really add character to each person to make the distinction between each character really clear. (We are allowed swearing as long as its relevant to the character-- which I’m glad Carla mentioned as I have some swearing in my dialogue.)

Luckily in todays lecture the main focus seems to be dialogue and the different ways to convey it like speed, tone, text (what we see on the page) , subtext (What they mean), how dialogue is expressed.

A good way to think about dialogue which we did a bit in the lecture is type out the gist of what I want the person to say and think of all the ways you can say it and choose the one most like our character would say. (e.g GO away, Fuck off, don't let the door hit you on your way out, I think were done here,,, etc) I defo plan on doing this with most of my dialogue later and I also think it’ll be really useful to have a character post on each character with their main personality traits, background things like that so that the dialogue really represents each character.

“Don't worry about being bold in your script and not saying everything in the script but rather the subtext” -Carla. I actually think this is better than having everything to on the nose so I think I’m going to go through mine again read it out loud and maybe get my flat mates to read a character each and edit based on how it sounds outload.

I also had a chat with Carla who recommended that I watch the craft, which seems very similar to my screenplay idea just set in the 90′s instead. So I plan on watching this later for research.

Grimoire-- prop research

After establishing my prop, I looked on Pintrest for inspiration of grimoire books. I wanted a dark looking one with a symbol on the front that is used allot in the darker practices of satanic witchcraft so I found a couple examples to use for initial inspiration...

I thought the first one was really cool especially as in my screenplay along with the book the girls use they have a glass jar filled with sheers and razors so that could be a cool way to combine two in one and really show off the whole vibe of my screenplay as I much prefer writing it out and planning it compared to character design side of it. Which is really useful to know for the future as its the first time I have written a screenplay and it’s surprisingly fun.

Character adaption breifing

TALK ABOUT BREFING, CREATING CHARACTERS WHO REPRESENT THE DUALTIY OF MAN AND MAKING A SCREENPLAY ABOUT IT TOO. TLK ABOUT MY IDEA AND WHAT WE WERE DOING IN TODAYS CLASS.

For the character adaption task we are going to be brining our screenplay characters to life. Our screenplays will be based of Jekyll and Hyde and the duality of man. This is quite a broad topic so I began narrowing my screen play idea down by just coming up with a simple character first (which we did in one of the workshops in class)

Her name is Evaline she’s 19 and a university student. (key points: dark, emo, punk, guilty pleasure for romance films, dark sense of humour, always been on the outskirts of friendship grounds, second year at uni, is reckless and never thinks things through) 

So far my idea for the screenplay is have Evaline and two other girls from her dorm start a society dedicated to the church of Satan they are all kind of emo and into Satanism. While round one of the other girls rooms they are doing the initiation to their new society and Evaline goes first as she is the unspoken leader of the group. They took this ceremony off the internet on a Satanism website where its how you devote your life to Satan and worshipping him. They thought it was fitting for the initiation ceremony so while Evaline starts performing the ritual she actually summons Satan. The two other girls freak out and one passes out (as they didn't fully believe in this type of stuff) Satan asked is she's ready to devote and worship him Evaline struck with fear answers yes, but Satan knows she's lying so he reaches into her soul and pulls out all the parts of Evaline that would reject/ fight against Satan. standing right next to Eveline is the other half of herself, identical in everyway. (or so it seems at first.) After Satan gets Evaline to sign her name into the book he vanishes. Evaline and the new copy of her freak out and decide its best to go back to their bedroom which is a big dorm room with two beds as Evaline's old roommate dropped out of uni and she never got a new roommate.

After calming down and getting used to the fact that she has been pulled in two Evaline goes to do some research about this whole thing online and pulls out her laptop and works on her desk where as the new copy of Evaline pulls out a joint from a locked box in the bedroom, as Evaline 1 hears this she turns around and asks what she's doing (Evaline 2 “What of course I know where you keep it, I’m part you remember and I could really do with one right about now, and I know you could too”)

Evaline 1 joins Evaline 2 in the middle of the room on the floor smoking and just chatting about the differences between them now and trying to get their heads around what just happened (This is when the differences between the two girls becomes more clear) eventually the other two girl character from before have calmed down and come to check on Evaline and the new version of her, after talking for a bit and Evaline explaining what happened to the new commers one of the girls says well this is just going to be confusing (while she’s taking a toke of the joint) (what am I supposed to call you Evaline two; electric boogaloo?) So Evaline two says just call me Eva, Evaline protests saying she’s always hated that nickname and then Eva argues saying its cute. Eva then goes on to say she doesn't like Evaline's sense of style or decoration so she’s goes to get dressed and comes back in a more hippie indie girl outfit so now the differences become even more apparent. 

Thats just my basic idea so far, kind of an info dump but I will be refining the idea a bit later.

It’s also going to be set at Salem State Uni, in Salem, Massachusetts, America, 1982. Because the whole reason the girls got into witchcraft and Satanism in the first place is because they already were interested but after moving to Salem to go to university to get away from home the girls met and bonded over Satanism and the fact they live in Sale where lots of witch trials took part only encouraged their obsession.

The reason I chose 1982 is because I really want to represent the two different versions of Evaline through their clothes and in the 80′s was when there was allot of stereotypical clicks around like the jocks, nerds, emos, hippies etc and so having Eva be a hippie and Evaline be emo/metal would be more normal then than most other time periods especially considering they are both teens in those years.
