It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a wild show because it says, here are a group of terrible, irredeemable people who are codependent in unimaginable ways. They will never, ever get better - in fact, they will get significantly worse. But there will be moments, little moments of genuine love and affection between them, and it will drive you crazy. And you will bear witness to times where the trauma they experienced as children possesses their body and they turn into scared little kids again. And then they will continue to be deplorable, and you will laugh your ass off, because this is a comedy! But inside you will also feel something tugging at your soul.

Rewatching “The Gang Gets Held Hostage” and kind of insane about how it so blatantly reveals something so incredibly telling that will be crucial in practically every episode of this show for the next 14-and-counting seasons: the most important person to Dennis is Dee, the most important person to Dee is Charlie, the most important person to Charlie is Mac, and the most important person to Mac is Dennis. No wonder these losers have been gridlocked in a codependent folie à quatre for the past 30-and-counting years. At least everybody is sort-of-loved.
