“So excited, it’s like I’ve done this a million times but not at all,” She excitedly announced to the other blonde, “I’m actually kind of nervous.”  she told her, tugging at the crook of her arm as they walked to the studio. “I looked up all the things that could go wrong and death by suffocation was one but, it’s like super rare. You sure you’re game?” The full entrance to the art studio glaring in their faces, a couple others casually walking into the body art studio. “Really, really this time’s gonna be the Swayze to my Moore.” Giving a wink and a tug no matter the answer.

“I just told you; you ran into me,” Nancy repeated in exasperation, pinching the offending jewelry between her fingers to keep the post from being ripped out of her ear. “And on the one day I’m actually wearing earrings, too… Stop! Just stop moving. I’ll fix this.”

Her snapping at him was not helping the situation. It also served to piss him off just a bit. Indy stilled in the most awkward position with a huff as he tried to just let Nancy do her thing. "I don't know who's worse, you or me."

“It’s all written like that. It doesn’t seem to have an author, either- or at least, there isn’t one listed,” Nancy replied, frowning as she flipped through the opening pages. “And the publisher is the Handbook for the Recently Deceased Press, so that doesn’t help us at all. I can’t tell if this is serious or somebody’s idea of an elaborate prank.”

Indy squinted over her shoulder as they thumbed through the thick book. “That’s a lot of instructions.” he observed, taking the book from her. “I couldn’t tell you. I’ve never seen something like this before. It’s definitely different. And thorough.”

“Almost… two in the morning,” Nancy replied, after a quick check of her watch. “I’m only still up because I just flew back from a different time zone. What’s the paper about?”

“Just an article I should have finished writing a week ago, nothing that important,” he muttered, pausing to rub his hands over his face. Taking a moment longer, he squinted at the woman in front of him. “What are you doing here, anyway?”

“It was a while ago now, I’m physically fine,” Nancy waved off his concern with a dismissive hand. “The ghost of Charlotte Thornton is supposed to haunt the place since she died there in a fire. The weird thing is, I saw her several times and even heard her singing. Moving statues, shadowy figures, even a tombstone with my name on it at one point.” She crossed her arms to keep herself from fidgeting, clearly uncomfortable.

“Everyone explained it away as being part Harper Thornton, Charlotte’s sister who’d secretly been living in the house, and partly hallucinations caused by fumes from the ancient furnace. The fire department determined that’s what caused the mansion to catch fire with us trapped inside too.”

Indy blinked, not exactly expecting that explanation. That was...atypical. He didn’t really have experiences like that, and certainly didn’t believe in ghosts. As a scientist, it wouldn’t do to discount the possibility of such things, but he’d never seen any concrete proof. 

“And...I’m afraid to ask what you’re going to ask me for. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad you’re okay, but I have a bad feeling you’re going to drag me into this too.”

“I wish I knew how I manage it, to be completely honest with you. Maybe then I could control it so I wasn’t always stumbling across secret passages while I’m trying to relax at home or enjoy my vacation.”

“You probably have just as bad, if not worse, luck than I do from the sound of it. I think I might be a bit impressed by that.”
