The Good Place really went off when they had Eleanor talk about her mother changing. Like, they really hit the nail on the head.

This is EXACTLY how it feels to see someone you love, someone who should've treated you so much better than they did, grow and change for the better. Like, part of you knows that they're better now and you shouldn't be mad, but part of you is like, "Then why didn't they do this before? Where was this change when I needed it? the thing to remember about Chidi Anagonye is that making decisions makes his stomach hurt and more than 800 separate (by his own definition) versions of him make the same decision to help Eleanor every single time no matter how hard it is and no matter how much it hurts. And yes they are extremely in love but crucially they are NOT soulmates. statistically they don’t usually even think they are. their love is built. it is forged in fire. and yet he chooses. CHOOSES. to help her before all that even happens. every single time.
