Arthur John Moore Burrowes family papers, 1915-1919, 1941.  Item 02: Letters to Arthur John Moore Burrowes from his family, 4 January 1918-26 March 1919 . Letters written during the 1914-1918 war by Frank (b. 1911) and Ruth (b. 1909) to their father Serg. Arthur John Moore Burrowes while he was serving overseas and kept by him while in the trenches of France. Includes childrens' drawings and watercolours.

Arthur John Moore Burrowes, a soldier of Rooty Hill, New South Wales enlisted on 26 Mar. 1917 aged 39 years and embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 19 Dec. 1917. He served with the 18th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement in France where he was wounded 8 Aug. 1918. He was treated in various hospitals in England before returning to Sydney on the HMT Takada, Feb.-Mar. 1919. He was in Randwick Military Hospital until the end of 1919, and lived until 1969.

See the world through (child-sized) rose colored glasses

As one of the Five Themes of Geography, “place” plays an important role in understanding and analyzing phenomena. “Sense of place” comes from one’s actual, lived experience of a certain space, but perhaps the more interesting facet of place is “perception of place” – one’s belief of what a space is like.

The International Cartographic Association’s (ICA) Children’s World Map Competition offers maps of our planet as perceived by children. According to a National Geographic blog, the purpose of the competition is to, “promote children’s creative representation of the world, to enhance their cartographic awareness and to make them conscious of their environment.” Winning maps from previous years can be seen at this National Geographic blog.

Aside from a few regions (including Central America and most of Africa) ICA members states are fairly representative of the world.

Take a break from perceiving the world based on GDP variance, CO2 emissions, poverty levels or deforestation rates and explore the world from a child’s perspective with these original maps!
