Once again, I wish I could have gotten closer, but what a cool-looking bug. Looks like someone stuck giant fly eyes on a clear-wing moth.

Golden-backed Snipe Fly (Chrysopilus thoracicus)
...a species of snipe fly (Rhagionidae) that is distributed throughout eastern North America. Adult C. thoracicus typically inhabit Deciduous woodlands and are active during spring, April through May. Adults are thought to be predatory on other insects, but they may not feed often.

Caught it today (5/27/2014) when going to get the mail so I could take a couple quick photos. From a distance it looked like a bee because of the coloring and it was pretty big (maybe an inch-ish?). Very beautiful fly.
Wish I had a macro lens but ah well!
