About the Hikaru no Go CDrama Qi Hun

I have known about the HikaGo CDrama since it came out, but for one reason or another never sat down to watch it until a week or so ago.

Now that I have, I'm so shocked at how brazenly the drama seems to be written as a romance between Yu Liang (Touya Akira) and Shi Guang (Shindou Hikaru).

Also, it provided the best version of Ogata, I say as a person who was never much a fan of his in the animanga. Fang Xu has a warmer, more brotherly relationship with Yu Liang, a more combative relationship with Yu Xiao Yang (Touya Kouyou), and a dynamic that reads very much as exes with Bai Chuan (a composite of Ashiwara and Shirakawa—who might have been already composited into Ashiwara in the anime, if my memory is not mistaken).

Chu Ying (Sai)'s characterization is a little different from what it was in the anime, but in a way that humanized him and made me feel a lot more acutely when he forgets he is invisible to Fang Xu and tried to interact with him. His interest in non-go-related things especially rounds him out in a way that I found very compelling without at all taking away from his hyperfixation on go strong enough to span multiple lifetimes.

I didn't know I needed a live action of HikaGo, but now that I've seen it I'm not sure why it took me so long to get around to watching it.

The most fascinating thing about the live action though, and what I least expected, is that it gives me every single akihika beat I wanted as a teenager shipping them, plus some I had no idea I needed, like the Valentine's Day episode involving Shi Guang getting lost on a mountain and calling Yu Liang for help, who shows up before the search party with no flashlight like he has a Shi Guang homing beacon...and as soon as the search party find them, he stomps off to sulk like an annoyed ex.

Also the last episode, which gives me more relationship negotiation between two rivals-turned-husbands-go-partners than I've ever seen in an Akihika fic.

Anyway, on the offchance that anyone reads this who likes HikaGo but hasn't seen the live action, I highly rec that you give it a chance (even if you don't ship Akihika--obviously that is not all this adaptation has to offer).

And if anyone reads this who has never consumed any version of HikaGo, I recommend them all--the animanga are more go-centric and the drama is more character-centric, is how I would characterize them. Even if you aren't interested in go and know nothing about it, the anime is designed to teach you the basics as you watch; the manga expects a tad more basic knowledge, and doesn't contain as much explanation of the game for the audience, so one could say it is fully story-focused through the medium of go.

so i'm rewatching qi hun and in the umbrella scene at the beginning of EP2, chu ying says "only the unchanging is everlasting" talking abt how the world has shifted since his time alive & w/ BZQ, but also the foreshadowing like.. this is the same ep where they establish the divine move goal & the reason chu ying disappears is not bc of the divine move but bc he has passed his legacy onto shi guang and also shi guang has shared life beyond go with him. and CY's goal is not himself but his legacy and who he changes. to be loved is to be changed and to be changed means versions of yourself disappear and are reborn and disappear and are reborn. shi guang changes him into a mentor and a friend and teaches him to value stuff outside of go (or expand his definition of playing/mastering/loving go). and he leaves. because only the unchanging is everlasting.

and this is EP2 so early on. also shi guang puts the umbrella over chu yings head but since chu ying is yknow not a tangible person the rain goes right through him anyways so he isnt affected by the rain but also not affected by shi guangs gesture of friendship. i think thats one of the reasons i liked the drama adaptation bc it had enough time to delve into stuff like this whereas this was a few panels in the manga. the format gives them an opportunity to unpack more

Chu Ying is a version of Sai that had the opportunity to grow up.

I have talked before about how I think Sai died as a teenager, but Chu Ying reads (to me) more like an adult, he is still petty and immature sometimes, but he doesn't have that air of naivety that Sai had, and is (slightly) more self aware of how selfish he is sometimes. Also idk how to explain it but the way he is more prideful and cared more about being famous in the go world (in contrast with Sai who only cared about playing against strong opponents) feels like a grown up flaw to me haha

i can't stop thinking about this scene in ep. 36 of 棋魂

SG tells CY not to worry because "even if i don't have you, i can still continue living on." yet he continually peeks at CY's face to check his reaction, 分明就是小朋友嘴硬的行为啊......

he continues to act nonchalant, telling CY about what's happened since he left, going so far as to say, "that you left without a goodbye—i don't blame you." he keeps up this detached facade for as long as he can...

...until CY gets up to leave. then SG's defenses crumble all over again. he can't pretend anymore:

"where are you going?"

leaping to his feet: "say something!"

voice strangled with tears: "let's not play this game of disappearing anymore, okay?"

那么小、那么可怜、那么赤诚的小朋友 是真的无法继续装下去的....... and neither can CY. so when he turns around, he doesn't dare to look at his xiao-Guang's heartbroken expression.

and then CY gives his fan to SG, neither of them able to meet the other's eyes.

睹物思人："xiao-Guang, although i've left, i am always here." (ep. 34)

then CY bows, and smiles to himself. "to have had this chance to encounter you is the greatest fortune of Chu Ying's three lives." (ep. 32)

and only when he is certain, absolutely certain, that SG is not looking at him—does he dare to steal a glance.

如今的褚赢早也不执着神之一手了，师父现在最放心不下的人 就只有他最疼爱的小徒弟了：影（赢）子的出现是因为有光。

finally, as CY turns and disappears, we see a guqin left behind in his wake.

知音啊：“我就住在你心里，我知道你是怎么想的。” (ep. 13)

亦师亦友亦知己，半尊半慕半倾心：这就是时光与褚赢之间的羁绊。

all this to say, 褚赢你给我回来啊！小光还需要你呢......

"you asked me what a thousand years is. a thousand years... a thousand years is when someone tells you, 'if only every day from now on were like today, how nice that would be'—and then he disappears. every day after that is a thousand years." (ep. 34)

— 小光，别怕。山水有重逢：月亮一直都在，而褚赢也依然的在。

“我怎么可能会离你而去呢？” / how could i possibly part from and leave you behind?

“我已经很久没见你了。是不是想见你还要再等上一千年？” / i already have not seen you in a very long time. is it that, in order to see you again, i have to wait another thousand years? “小光，这一千年的滋味 你又何尝知道？” / xiao-Guang, this taste of a thousand years—how could you know it? “只要你愿意回来，我什么都可以不要。” / as long as you're willing to come back, i won't want for anything else. “比起想念来，千年又何其长；比起相见来，千年又何其短。” / how endless a thousand years feels when longing for you, how short a thousand years feels when we are together. (ep. 34)
