Enchanter’s Nightshade- Circaea canadensis is the North American variety of this woodland plant growing in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s Eurasian counterpart Circaea lutetiana bears a close resemblance. This Saturnian herb is named after the sorceress-goddess Circe. While it is not an actual nightshade it’s historical association has earned it a place among the witching herbs nonetheless. Circe is a favorite patron and tutelary spirit of herbalists, green witches and plant magicians. Her knowledge of the magical properties of powerful pharmaka make her a powerful ally when embarking on the poison path. Add enchanter’s nightshade to any formula to imbue it with Circe’s influence. Known as “the dread goddess who walks with mortals,” she occupies a liminal space between humans and the gods. She has an in depth knowledge of the underworld and the herbs that facilitate travel there. Circe is one of the first and earliest witch-archetypes and she used her powers of transformation and fascination to protect herself and her precious island from intruders.
