Myths know no frontiers. The Elvis legend extends far beyond the gilt and glamour of Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee. In fact, it is just as alive on the other side of the Atlantic in Porthcawl, a small town on the south coast of Wales, where an annual festival takes place each September in honour of the King.
Between Tennessee and Wales, the fans bear an uncanny resemblance to each other: clones of a double-chinned idol with a slicked-back quiff who lay claim to the fat-bellied kitsch of their parvenu idol. With petrol-blue shirts and billowing skirts, these doubles of Elvis and Priscilla act out the same sweet dream, one that is full of glory and posterity.
Nothing in these images gives away any clue as to which side of the Atlantic we are on. The beauty of these photographs, located half-way between fiction and reality, is the way they document a planet Elvis, inhabited by those who invent radiant destinies for themselves far beyond the course of fate and the banalities of the day-to-day.
