Maxwell said "I took offense when Comfrey said 'my adventures' because the character dynamics were the best part of the books" and what I took from that is that this boy who felt so lonely in his own family loved this book series so much because it was about found family

And also it makes more sense why he says the books started getting worse after the 4th book, maybe he doesn't realize it fully but as a kid subconsciously he must have felt a bit of tension between them and Comfrey and disliked that the found family dynamic had slowly started changing
