Gecarcoidea lalandii H.Milne Edwards, 1837
The crab with the absolute wettest puppydog eyes. Gecarcoidea lalandii knows all about what it's like to have a famous cousin as it's in the same genus with the one and only Christmas island red crab(Gecarcoidea natalis). Standard to the genus' ecology, G. lalandii also migrate from the forest floors to shores to release their eggs, although they do so in a smaller crowd.
I've talked about some of the threats these terrestrial crabs face in other posts already. For them to complete their life history it requires multiple habitats to be available and connected, which is increasingly difficult as anthropogenic development reshapes coastal regions. The coastal forest where I photographed this Gecarcoidea lalandii and all the other terrestrial crabs from the previous posts is a huge hot spot and has been set as an ecological reserve for over 4 decades. And even here the crab residents are still being directly impacted by the coastal highway crossing the entire reserve. Much more work and ecological engineering is still needed to safeguard these crabs of multiple worlds.
