A genderbent Oleander that I made for fun because I felt like it and I actually am proud of this design, I will probably draw this often. [S]he looks fierce and pretty. Looks less ugly than the actual Oleander (LOL 🤣😂)! I loved how this turned out. Of course I had to do this!!!

Colour task and reflection

Here are 5 sets of Pantone swatches that reflect on my time during University.

Name - recharge I chose the colour blue as I felt that i needed to take a step back and basically just recharge!

Name - sunset run

When finishing University I would always be rushing back while there was a sunset.

Name - mocha

For a pick up I would drink a mocha latte.

Name - everyday deadlines

Showing the other side of University life.

Name - brainwave

Different shades of pink to show a creative process. 

Task 3

This is a colour palette that is similar to the one I have chosen for my magazine. I have kept it simple with a pop of colour.

This is my new colour palette created using Adobe.

I have now applied it to my magazine layout.

Front cover -  the black background can be seen as too harsh, although I like it as it makes the photograph and masthead stand out. I have changed the black line to a blue-green colour. To improve the front cover I would change the colour of the different captions as it just doesn’t look good to me. This can be considered as ‘bad design’. Although this is a type of style when it comes to anti-design and rule breaking in graphic design. How do you feel about this? 

First double spread page - the change of colour on this page is another colour choice that works. The purple texture stands out and I really like how I can see the details in it. If I was to develop this page in the future I would add experiment with he composition, background and add something near the black box. 

Second page spread - I haven’t made any changes to the articles and kept it plain. Again, if I was to develop this I could re-arrange the way the paragraphs are and add some grid like boxes to this page. I would make the layout hierarchical. Could I change the colour and boxed outline on the pull quote? 

I have used another photograph that wasn’t used on the original magazine. The difference on this page is the colours. I have used the colour green to contrast with the colour purple and to make it stand out. I am unsure about the green pattern, but it is visually interesting. 

How to Use Duotone in Adobe Photoshop

Choose Image→Mode→Grayscale.

Choose Image→Mode→Duotone.

In the Duotone dialog box, select Duotone from the Type drop-down list.

To assign a second ink colour, click the white swatch immediately under the black swatch.

Click the Colour Libraries button, and then select Pantone solid coated as the library.

What did I learn?

I came across some very useful websites that helped me to create the colour palettes that I desired. I learnt how to use use duotone in Adobe Photoshop. It was nice to colourise my magazine from the swatch I created using Adobe. I really like the outcome of this and used colours that I didn’t even think of using.

FLUENTLY illustration markers from Daiso

They had about 17 colours/shades and 1 colourless blender (which I suspect is just some alcohol solvent) at the Daiso I bought them at. The markers are generally not bad except for the rather small range of colours available. They obviously can’t compare to a copic but they’re quite good for playing around. The markers are dual-tipped and come in packs of 2. It’s best quality though, has to be its price.
