Marie pulled her braid over her shoulder, a small giggle escaping her lips as she accepted the flowers from the son of the man her father was currently doing business with while the two young people were expected to wait patiently and entertain themselves as respectable men and women ought.

“Thank you,” she said softly, burying her face into the bouquet.

“It’s embarrassing,” she began, “but I never studied flowers. I know plenty about alcohol, but very little about flowers.”

Though not permitted to learn the business end of her father’s seemingly endless distilleries, Marie, even at sixteen, was expected to know everything there was to know about the various spirits they produced, as she was a fashionable young lady and might very well have a strong pull on the choices society folk made should she make a successful match into a powerful house.

In short, her social standing was a mere tool for her family’s advancement.

But now there was a boy here, not much older than she if he was at all, and he had given her a token of affection. Platonic of romantic it mattered not to her. He acknowledged her existence outside of the business and that was enough for her in this moment.
