Every aquarist knows of the freshwater angelfishes, and many will know that they are cichlids, unrelated to the marine fishes that are also known as angelfishes. Specifically, they are related to fellow South American cichlids, and particularly to such popular and peaceful fishes as the discus and the severum. Specifically the familiar angelfish is, basically the scalare (Pterophyllum scalare); this is a widely distributed species in the Amazon Basin, though other species of freshwater angelfish exist. After some decades of captive breeding, numerous domesticated morphs of this species have been developed by aquarists.
In fact the angelfishes in the pet trade may have varying degrees of admixture from at least one related species (now called P. leopoldi), and some wild angelfish populations, may also have significant hybrid origins, for example those from the Orinoco region. Simple convergent evolution can also create misleading impressions; so-called 'Peruvian altums' that resemble P. altum, are in fact a naturally occurring morph of.P. scalare, one that is indigenous to Rio Nanay.
The 'Peruvian altums', or Peruvian veil or Nanay angelfishes, are an example of a local race within P. scalare; it is undeniably a regional phenotype but it is less genetically distinct, than are the the Manacapuru and Santa Isabel races of the same species - that also appear in pet shops. The variability of P. scalare has long been noticed, and if anything the surprise to ichthyologists, was actially that the true P. altum really is so distinct,, and not simply another tall finned morph within P. scalare.
But what is a species, anyway? In the context of humans, it is common to dismiss race nowadays; but evolution works on populations, and species is just categories invented by humans, to communicate concepts and observations. Clearly it is the population that matters more, and whatever we choose to call them, natural selection has forged angelfishes into different and localized meta-populations (or races).
The water of the Rio Nanay has a pH of 6.5 to 7, and a water temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. Whereas the Manacapuru race is native to the Rio Solimoes where the pH of the water may be higher, and the Santa Isobel race are native to the Rio Negro, which definitely has a lower pH than the Nanay and the Solimoes. The temperatures experienced by angelfish from rivers like the Negro and the Orinoco, can be a little higher than the average temperature of a tropical tank.
Some populations - like those from Rio Amazonas itself - commonly experience temperatures of 28 or 30 degrees, and for at least some P. scalare this is their optimal environmental temperature. Scalare-type angelfishes from other localities, however, might not appreciate this so well; the Rio Nanay is a little cooler. They all hunt amid tall vegetation, and their stripes are a camouflage for this purpose, because they are slow and un-streamlined ambush predators, that must slowly approach their prey. They require a planted aquarium.
All of the freshwater angelfishes are very elegant in their looks and movement, and for this reason they are classic focal members of planted community tanks. This is although they are large and predatory enough to be a real danger to small fish and shrimp. They are carnivorous fishes and do not kill or damage plants by eating them, nor do they uproot them as they nest or forage, as do some other cichlid species Feeding them is easy enough because most tropical fish share their insectivorous habits.
Although very small fish will be eaten, larger schooling fish that they cannot hope to swallow, are safe as tankmates. (One should also b aware the risk, that other fish might take to nipping the fins of these slow and stately swimmers.) The angelfish themselves are gregarious animals with social hierarchies; individuals recognize one another and as with all social animals, they must be accommodated together in a group, and each fish must be able to retreat into the aquascape, should it receive unwelcome attention from its own species, or any other.
