[S] John: Reunite with your loving wife and daughter.
When I sent my cover of "How Do I Live" as kind of a gag gift to Andrew Hussie via the old music team forum I was violating one of the first major rules of this project which was that we weren't supposed to be doing songs with lyrics. Given that I'd been sneaking in the occasional "meow" and "neigh" already just by being goofy enough to get my stuff shoved into the flashes, I figured taking a bigger, goofier swing by turning Diane Warren's rather reserved love song from Con Air into a thrashy, stadium sized rock ballad might meet Andrew's comedic sensibilities. Needless to say it made it in, becoming one of the comic's greatest and silliest music moments.
It was also a big adventure for me - I had never put any of my own singing online before! Suddenly I was way out of my comfort zone, passionately belting out a love song at power ballad levels. Listening to it now it's astonishing how brazen the whole thing is given how little experience I had, but I think Homestuck just has a way of driving people to try things they might not do otherwise. In some ways it was the crucial step that gave me the courage to pursue my own songwriting, which I soon did with Mobius Trip and Hadron Kaleido and all of the solo work that followed.
It's great to see this animation, which inspired so many of the people I've met at conventions to sing along even more brazenly, back on the website where it belongs. Grab your air guitars and join in!
