Louisiana teachers stand to lose a $2,000 stipend they have received over the past several years and the state’s business inventory tax will remain untouched after a set of constitutional amendments resoundingly failed to pass at the polls on Saturday.
The results also mean that the city of St. George in East Baton Rouge Parish will not get its own school district, and that the mandatory retirement age for judges will remain set at 70 instead of increasing to 75. Voters further rejected a measure that would have given the Legislature more power over the civil service status of state employees.
The amendments took a beating in an election cycle marred by controversy: Gov. Jeff Landry suspended the U.S. House races at the last minute so that the state could redraw its congressional map to favor Republicans after a landmark Supreme Court ruling declared Louisiana’s existing map unconstitutional.
