Top comment: As a Turkish person without bias, this flag looks very great thou; simple, modern(this tri-color stripe variations is used a lot in this subreddit), easily readable, and memorable also looks very clean.
I have wanted to make this post for a while, as cussing is a very debatable topic among Christians. I recently got unfollowed by someone, who I had been following for a very long time, because one of my posts had one cuss word... and I have absolutely no issue with that.
My biggest question is, is cussing a sin? I don't ever recall reading that in the Bible. Oh, I've looked, and I see a lot of verses taken out of context, which I will address later. I also want to know how someone defines a cuss word. What is good, what is bad? Is crap a cuss word? To some people it is. Is damn a swear word? To some it is. How do we define what's good and what's bad when the Bible does not?
The Bible has detailed lists on what not to do, such as murder, lust, deceit... the list goes on. Romans is a good chapter with plenty of do's and do not's, and cussing isn't one of them. But let me take a moment to address scripture that people often give me when saying swearing is a sin.
Ephesians 4:29 ESV Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
It's quite obvious God does not want corrupt talk coming from our mouth, but what is corrupt? Right after this, it says to only say things that would build someone up; help someone in their faith, make their day better, you get the picture. Corrupt talk would be anything that would tear them down, make them stumble, fall, and hurt. Bad stuff, but that doesn't mean cuss words are a sin... let's move on.
James 5:12 ESV But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
I really hope to many people don't use this one to say cussing is bad. It's quite obvious it's talking about making an oath or promise. Basically, don't say "I swear by God that I'll do this," just say "I'll do it," then go and do it.
Colossians 3:8 ESV But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
You can do the above without cuss words, and you don't even have to try.
1 Peter 3:10 (KJV) 10 For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;
This verse basically says not to speak to someone with evil or deceit.
James 3:9-12 (ESV) 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers,[a] these things ought not to be so.
In this case, cursing can be compared to damnation. You can look it up in a Concordance.
//// The following is my opinion.
To sum things up, cuss words themself are not a sin, it's the context in which they is used. If I use cuss words to speak about someone with evil, hate, or anger, I am sinning... but I'm sinning even if I don't use cuss words.
If I use a cuss word in any other context, it is not a sin.
If I drive my truck into a tree, something will be coming out of my mouth, like Damn it!, but I'm not sinning because I'm not speaking out in anger or malice against another person. I even think you can be uplifting while using some cuss words, like "I'm damn proud of you for being so strong." You get the picture.
These are my thoughts.
I dislike seeing Christians attack other Christians for cussing.
It's not a sin to use some cuss words, so get over it.
Read the Bible and you'll read words like ass, bastard (no, I'm not joking), damn, and hell in there.
Shocked to find such unholy words in the holy book?
